Quantum Transport With Spin Dephasing: A Nonequilibrium Green's Function Approach, Ahmet Ali Yanik, Gerhard Klimeck, Supriyo Datta Nov 2006

Quantum Transport With Spin Dephasing: A Nonequilibrium Green's Function Approach, Ahmet Ali Yanik, Gerhard Klimeck, Supriyo Datta

Other Nanotechnology Publications

A quantum transport model incorporating spin scattering processes is presented using the nonequilibrium Green’s function (NEGF) formalism within the self-consistent Born approximation. This model offers a unified approach by capturing the spin-flip scattering and the quantum effects simultaneously. A numerical implementation of the model is illustrated for magnetic tunnel junction devices with embedded magnetic impurity layers. The results are compared with experimental data, revealing the underlying physics of the coherent and incoherent transport regimes. It is shown that spin scattering processes are suppressed with increasing barrier heights while small variations in magnetic impurity spin-states/concentrations could cause large deviations in junction …

Jfk Blown Away -- Hooray! Kennedy's Dallas Visit Roiled Hate Groups, Donald E. Wilkes Jr. Nov 2006

Jfk Blown Away -- Hooray! Kennedy's Dallas Visit Roiled Hate Groups, Donald E. Wilkes Jr.

Popular Media

Exactly 43 years ago, on Nov. 22, 1963, 46-year old President John F. Kennedy was assassinated at 12:30 p.m. in Dealey Plaza in downtown Dallas, TX.

Dallas was then, as Matthew Smith notes in JFK: THE SECOND PLOT (1992), "the southwest hate capital of Dixie... In its politics and in its people, Dalls represented the right wing as far as it could go." Before and during his Dallas visit, local right-wingers busied themselves to make JFK unwelcome. They were angry and indignant that JFK was coming to their city. In fact, at the very time shots were being fired at …

Limited Functional Redundancy And Oscillation Of Cyclins In Multinucleated Ashbya Gossypii Fungal Cells, A. Katrin Hungerbuehler, Peter Philippsen, Amy S. Gladfelter

Dartmouth Scholarship

Cyclin protein behavior has not been systematically investigated in multinucleated cells with asynchronous mitoses. Cyclins are canonical oscillating cell cycle proteins, but it is unclear how fluctuating protein gradients can be established in multinucleated cells where nuclei in different stages of the division cycle share the cytoplasm. Previous work in A. gossypii, a filamentous fungus in which nuclei divide asynchronously in a common cytoplasm, demonstrated that one G1 and one B-type cyclin do not fluctuate in abundance across the division cycle. We have undertaken a comprehensive analysis of all G1 and B-type cyclins in A. gossypii to determine whether …

Nevada Institute for Children's Research and Policy Reports

On November 16, 2005, the Legislative Commission unanimously voted to approve hiring the Nevada Institute for Children’s Research and Policy (NICRP), School of Public Health, UNLV to study and evaluate governmental entities and private facilities that have physical custody of children pursuant to a court order and other public entities that provide for the care and supervision of children in the State of Nevada. The study included three primary components. The first component involved an analysis of the guidelines, protocols, policies and procedures of these entities/facilities which affect the health, safety, welfare, treatment and civil or other rights of children …

Donor Tricuspid Annuloplasty During Orthotopic Heart Transplantation: Long-Term Results Of A Prospective Controlled Study, Valluvan Jeevanandum, Hyde Russell, Paul Mather, Satoshi Furukawa, Allen Anderson, Jaishankar Raman

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Background: Development of tricuspid regurgitation after orthotopic heart transplantation can cause heart failure along with renal and hepatic impairment and portends a poor prognosis. If tricuspid regurgitation causes significant symptoms, tricuspid valve repair or replacement is often required. This study was designed to study the effects of prophylactic tricuspid valve annuloplasty (TVA) during orthotopic heart transplantation on long-term survival, renal function, and amount of tricuspid regurgitation.

Methods: Between April 1997 and March 1998, 60 patients (aged 18 to 70 years; 22 female) randomly received either standard bicaval orthotopic heart transplantation (group STD; n = 30) or bicaval orthotopic …

Law Professor, Son Pen Chapter In Book On The Beatles And Philosophy, Staff Report

University of Mississippi News

A University of Mississippi law professor and his 17-year-old son have co-authored a chapter in the book "The Beatles and Philosophy" (Open Court Publishing Co., 2006). The contribution of Michael and Joseph Hoffheimer discusses the songs of Beatles member George Harrison and argues that Harrison's interest in Eastern philosophy added depth to the Beatles and helped change the course of Western popular culture. Michael Hoffheimer, who teaches criminal law and civil procedure, grew up during the Beatles' era. His son Joseph is a senior at Oxford High School.

Providing An Oai-Pmh Interface To The Storage Resource Broker With Oaisrb, Michael Witt, Jigar Kadakia

Libraries Research Publications

The OAISRB software was developed by Michael Witt and Jigar Kadakia of the Purdue University Libraries provide an Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) interface to expose metadata from digital objects residing on the Storage Resource Broker (SRB) to OAI service providers. By harvesting metadata from the SRB, grid resources such as large research datasets from computational sciences can be represented alongside more conventional digital library objects such as e-prints and digitized archival collections. This poster was presented at the 2nd International Digital Curation Conference in Glasgow, Scotland, on November 22, 2006.

A Graph-Theoretic Method For Detecting Potential Turing Bifurcations, Maya Mincheva, Marc R. Roussel Nov 2006

A Graph-Theoretic Method For Detecting Potential Turing Bifurcations, Maya Mincheva, Marc R. Roussel

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

The conditions for diffusion-driven (Turing) instabilities in systems with two reactive species are well known. General methods for detecting potential Turing bifurcations in larger reaction schemes are, on the other hand, not well developed. We prove a theorem for a graph-theoretic condition originally given by Volpert and Ivanova [Mathematical Modeling (Nauka, Moscow, 1987) (in Russian), p. 57] for Turing instabilities in a mass-action reaction-diffusion system involving n substances. The method is based on the representation of a reaction mechanism as a bipartite graph with two types of nodes representing chemical species and reactions, respectively. The condition for diffusion-driven instability is …

Properties Of Some Matrix Classes In Linear Complementarity Theory., Arup Kumar Das Dr. Nov 2006

Properties Of Some Matrix Classes In Linear Complementarity Theory., Arup Kumar Das Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The linear complementarity problem is a fundamental problem that arises in optimization, game theory, economics, and engineering. It can be stated as follows:Given a square matrix A of order n with real entries and an n dimensional vector q, find n dimensional vectors w and z satisfying w − Az = q, w ≥ 0, z ≥ 0 (1.1.1) w t z = 0. (1.1.2)This problem is denoted as LCP(q, A). The name comes from the condition (1.1.2), the complementarity condition which requires that at least one variable in the pair (wj , zj ) should be equal to 0 …
