Krf Excimer Laser-Assisted Combustion-Flame Deposition Of Diamond Films, Y. X. Han, Hao Ling, Yongfeng Lu Nov 2006

Krf Excimer Laser-Assisted Combustion-Flame Deposition Of Diamond Films, Y. X. Han, Hao Ling, Yongfeng Lu

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

Cobalt (Co) composition has detrimental effects on the deposition of diamond films on cemented tungsten carbide (WC-Co) substrates. It decreases adhesion of the deposited films to the substrates and causes a transformation of sp3-bonded diamond to sp2-bonded graphite. In this study, a KrF excimer laser with a wavelength of 248 nm, a pulse width of 23 ns, and a pulse energy range of 84–450 mJ was used in the combustion-flame method to improve the quality of the deposited diamond films. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray analysis, and Raman spectroscopy of the deposited films showed that …

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

We report six phases of high-density nano-ice predicted to form within carbon nanotubes (CNTs) at high pressure. High-density nano-ice self-assembled within smaller-diameter CNT (17,0) exhibits a double-walled helical structure where the outer wall consists of four double- stranded helixes, which resemble a DNA double helix, and the inner wall is a quadruple-stranded helix. Four other double-walled nano-ices, self-assembled respectively in two larger-diameter CNTs (20,0 and 22,0), display tubular structure. Within CNT (24,0), the confined water can freeze spontaneously into a triple-walled helical nanoice where the outer wall is an 18-stranded helix and the middle and inner walls are hextuple-stranded helixes.

Are Browse-Wrap Agreements All They Are Wrapped Up To Be? , Ian A. Rambarran

ExpressO

Electronic agreements continue to fortify their presence in the digital commercial marketplace. Whether used to sell goods or services, or simply to define relationships, standardized electronic agreements have appeared in abundance in business-to-business or business-to-consumer transactions. Standardized electronic agreements, like their physical counterparts, offer the ability to address multiple concerns in a simple, efficient fashion. Although electronic contracts and electronic signatures have been accepted and promoted by federal and state governments, many fundamental aspects of contract law have been left for the courts to wrestle with when disputes arise.

Today, there are essentially two types of standardized electronic agreements—the click-through …

Peter Dowben Publications

A boron carbide diode detector, fabricated from two different polytypes of semiconducting boron carbide, will detect neutrons in reasonable agreement with theory. Small deviations from the model calculations occur due to the detection efficiencies of the 10B capture products Li plus α sum signal differing somewhat from expectation in the thin diodes. The performance of the all boron carbide neutron detector does depart from the behavior of devices where a boron rich neutron capture layer is distinct from the diode charge collection region (i.e. a conversion layer solid state detector), as is expected.

Effect Of Mixed Solvents Consisting Of Water And Organic Solvent On Preparation Of Medium-Responsive Grafted Cellulose Film By Means Of Photografting, Irwan Ginting Suka

Makara Journal of Science

Cellulose having a medium-responsive function were synthesized by photografting of methacrylic acid (MAA) on regenerated cellulose film (thickness = 20 µm) at 60°C using mixed solvent consisting of water and organic solvents such as acetone and methanol. Xanthone was used as photoinitiator by coating on the film surfaces. A maximum percentage of grafting was observed at a certain concentration of organic solvent. MAA-grafted cellulose films produced showing homogeneous distribution of grafted chains, which was examined by scanning electron microscopy. The modified films also exhibit medium responsive character, it shrinks in acidic and swells in basic solution. Moreover, the grafted film …

Imperceptible of Watermarking in Digital Image Based Singular Value Decomposition. Watermarking is a commonly used technique to protect digital image from unintended used such as counterfeiting. This paper will address one of the techniques to embed a watermark to digital image which is based on the singular value decomposition. The primary target to be achieved by a good watermarking technique is that the watermarked image is imperceptible and that the inserted image can still be perfectly retrieved even though various transformations are done to the watermarked image. Our works show that the SVD-based watermarking demonstrates both imperceptibility as well as …

The Meaning Of “Life”: The Morning-After-Pill, The Question Of When Life Begins, And Judicial Review, Jason M. Horst Nov 2006

The Meaning Of “Life”: The Morning-After-Pill, The Question Of When Life Begins, And Judicial Review, Jason M. Horst

ExpressO

The Article foresees that certain state legislation limiting access to the morning-after-pill will thrust the question of when life begins onto the courts. This is due both to fact that the morning-after-pill has the potential to act at a point when the existence of potential life is in dispute and largely a matter of belief and to the fact that the constitutionality of the legislation may depend on whether courts consider the morning-after-pill abortion or contraception.

The Article argues that courts should address the question of whether to consider the morning-after-pill abortion or contraception by attempting to adopt and apply …

The Central Laser Facility At The Pierre Auger Observatory, B. Fick, M. Malek, J. A.J. Matthews, J. Matthews, R. Meyhandan, M. Mostafá, M. Roberts, P. Sommers, L. Wiencke

Faculty Publications

The Central Laser Facility is located near the middle of the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina. It features an ultraviolet laser and optical components that direct a beam of calibrated, pulsed light into the sky. Light scattered from this beam produces tracks in the Auger optical detectors, which normally record nitrogen fluorescence tracks from cosmic ray air showers. The Central Laser Facility acts as a "test beam" that is used to investigate properties of the atmosphere and the air fluorescence detectors. Additionally, the laser can send a light pulse via optical fiber to the nearest surface detector tank. This signal, …

Agronomic And Quality Effects In Winter Wheat Of A Gene Conditioning Resistance To Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus, L. A. Divis, R. A. Graybosch, C. J. Peterson, P. Stephen Baenziger, G. L. Hein, B. B. Beecher, T. J. Martin

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV) is one of the most important diseases limiting winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production in the western Great Plains of North America. There is no known effective WSMV resistance within the primary gene pool of wheat. However, a resistance gene (Wsm1) has been transferred to wheat from a perennial relative, intermediate wheat-grass [Thinopyrum intermedium (Host) Barkworth & DR Dewey]. Nebraska-adapted winter wheat lines carrying Wsm1 were used to characterize the effects of this alien introgression on agronomic and quality traits. Sister-lines from six breeding populations were evaluated under virus-free conditions, …
