Effect Of In Ovo Exposure To Pcbs And Hg On Clapper Rail Bone Mineral Chemistry From A Contaminated Salt Marsh In Coastal Georgia, Alejandro Rodriquez-Navarro, Christopher S. Romanek, Pedro Alvarez-Lloret, Karen F. Gaines Jan 2006

Gaines

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

The effect of Hg and PCBs (Aroclor 1268) on bone characteristics was investigated in a population of Clapper Rails (Rallus longirostris) inhabiting contaminated and unimpacted estuarine marsh systems in coastal Georgia. Exposure to contaminants did not affect the length or weight of leg bones, but it significantly altered the chemical composition of the bone. Specifically, bone in the contaminated site had a higher Ca to P, and lower carbonate and acid phosphate content. These characteristics are typical of more mature bone mineral and indicate that toxicants have accelerated bone maturation. FTIR spectroscopy data revealed a dose dependent change in the …

An Empirical Analysis Of Child Custody Decisions: A Mulitnomial Logit Analysis Of Case Level U.S. Data, Susan Gardner Jan 2006

An Empirical Analysis Of Child Custody Decisions: A Mulitnomial Logit Analysis Of Case Level U.S. Data, Susan Gardner

Theses & Honors Papers

Despite growing interest in the analysis of family structure (in particular divorce) and its impact on the social and economic development of children, little empirical research has attempted to analyze the factors that explain the child custody decisions of the courts. In this paper, I analyze a random sample of 222 state level child custody court decisions in an attempt to uncover the factors that significantly influence the outcome of the decision. In particular, using a multinomial logit approach, I am able to more accurately assess the role of social, demographic, and legal characteristics of each case. Unlike previous work, …

Periodicals Collection Management: Organizing, Creating, And Maintaining A System, Paul Bazin, Norman P. Desmarais, Janice Schuster Jan 2006

Periodicals Collection Management: Organizing, Creating, And Maintaining A System, Paul Bazin, Norman P. Desmarais, Janice Schuster

Library Faculty and Staff papers

This paper examines Providence College’s experience in organizing, creating, and implementing the library’s collection management system, including how and why we chose Microsoft Access®, involved non-periodicals library staff in each phase, worked with existing periodicals information to form the basis for the collection management system, decided which information/fields to include, and retrieved/compiled the necessary information about each title by comparing our existing records to what was physically on the shelf.

We also discuss how we used the collection management system to solicit input into collection management decisions such as cancellations and retention, create detailed reports with a variety of information, …

Validation Of Water Flux And Body Composition In Glaucous Gulls (Larus Hyperboreus), Scott A. Shaffer, Gabrielsen, G.W., Verreault, J, Costa, D.P

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Water influx rates (WIR) measured with tritiated water dilution were compared with direct measures of water and energy intake in glaucous gulls (Larus hyperboreus). Total body water (TBW) measured isotopically was also compared with TBW determined by body composition analysis (BCA) of the same birds. Seventeen wild gulls were captured and studied in outdoor enclosures at Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, in July 2002. Gulls were hand-fed known quantities of Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida) or given water on the basis of one of four experimental treatments: (A) fasting, (B) fish only, (C) water only, or (D) fish and water. Water and energy content …

Descriptive Analysis Of Aquatic Intertebrate Communities In Wadeable And Non-Wadeable Streams Of The Northern Great Plains Network, Jill Rust, Nels H. Troelstrup Jr.

Oak Lake Field Station Research Publications

The National Park Service has initiated the Inventory & Monitoring Program to identify and monitor vital signs of park conditions throughout the United States. Initial assessments and inventories are required to facilitate this monitoring program. This effort provided preliminary and methodologically consistent descriptions for wadeable and non-wadeable streams of the Northern Great Plains Network (NGPN). Sweepnet samples were collected from 41 reaches of 7 non-wadeable streams and 23 wadeable streams during the summers of 2004 and 2005 using modified U.S. EPA EMAP protocols. Wadeable stream samples contained 219 taxa (77 families, 188 genera), comprised primarily of insects (86%). Non-wadeable samples …

Forage Shortages … Low Milk Prices … And How To Beat Them, Alvaro Garcia Jan 2006

Forage Shortages … Low Milk Prices … And How To Beat Them, Alvaro Garcia

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

As a result of the drought, forage quality is poor and not much is available. Grain is in short supply. So it should come as no surprise that the laws of supply and demand are at work and that prices for both types of feed have almost doubled since last year. At the same time, dairy cow numbers and individual cow production in the 20 leading states are on the rise, pushing the price of milk to its lowest point in decades. Dairy producers may need to consider some new options.

Pasture And Grazing Land Price Information, Matthew A. Diersen, Martin K. Beutler Jan 2006

Pasture And Grazing Land Price Information, Matthew A. Diersen, Martin K. Beutler

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Pasture and grazing land is a valuable resource in South Dakota, as it accounts for 53% of total land use. The price of land is determined by productivity and market forces. Various sources of land price information are available; they are given here to improve your awareness of prices that are available, when prices are released, and what factors influence them. • Knowledge of land values is useful when deciding between utilizing grazing land and renting it to others. • Knowledge of current returns to land is useful for determining the value of livestock that utilize forage. • Finally, the …

What We Know About H5n1 (The Bird Flu) Virus And … People, Pets, Songbirds, Tanya Graham

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

We know that most people in Asia who have become infected with H5N1 (the bird flu virus) have been exposed while slaughtering, de-feathering, and butchering sick or dead domestic poultry. Only one outbreak of human H5N1 disease (in Azerbaijan) has involved wild birds as the most likely source of infection for humans. Following an outbreak of H5N1 in wild swans, humans who plucked the feathers from dead swans (for pillows) were likely exposed to the virus while collecting feathers. Of seven people who became ill, four later died. Scientists suspect there may be a genetic susceptibility to H5N1 virus in …

Population Genetics And Phylogeography Of The Pygmy Nuthatch In Southern California, Thomas Alan Benson Jan 2006

Population Genetics And Phylogeography Of The Pygmy Nuthatch In Southern California, Thomas Alan Benson

Theses Digitization Project

Uses mitochondrial DNA sequence data to examine the degree of genetic differentiation among sky island populations of two subspecies of pygmy nuthatch (Sitta pygmaea melanotis and Sitta pygmaea leuconucha) occurring in Southern California. Assesses the hypothesis that sky islands are genetically isolated and that migration (gene flow) is restricted among them. Eleven sampling locations throughout Southern California were selected based on representation of subspecies, availability of specimens, and feasibility of collection. Results indicate that pygmy nuthatch populations fragmented in the disjunct mountain ranges of Southern California exhibit low but significant levels of genetic differentiation.

Theses Digitization Project

This quantitative study investigates the disparity that exists between girls and boys and how changes can be implemented to keep boys from disengaging from reading. It examines the reading materials that are available to increase boys' interest in reading and discusses ways in which teachers can develop programs and parents can take action to change boys reading habits. The study employed teacher surveys and student surveys from sixth grade boys in three San Bernardino middle schools.

Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl Novels: Contemporary Subversive Tales, Amy Ruth Wilson Clark Jan 2006

Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl Novels: Contemporary Subversive Tales, Amy Ruth Wilson Clark

Theses Digitization Project

Drawing especially on Donna Haraway's notion of the cyborg, this thesis argues that Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl novels, through their depiction of the cyborg and their use of metafiction, intertextuality, and irony, subvert binaries and hierarchies that cause social injustice. Chapter one argues that Colfer's characters disrupt the oppressive binary opposition between innocence and experience that characterizes children's literature. Chapter two argues that Colfer's fairy hierarchy satirizes the human hierarchy. Chapter three argues that Colfer's cyborg, by disrupting the boundary between machine and organism, breaches the wall around the pervasive garden hierarchy of childhood innocence. Chapter four argues against the …

Natural History Of Hesperoyucca Whipplei, Lizabeth Ann Hope-King Jan 2006

Natural History Of Hesperoyucca Whipplei, Lizabeth Ann Hope-King

Theses Digitization Project

Explores many aspects of the Hesperoyucca whipplei (formerly known as Yucca whipplei), a type of chaparral plant that grows in arid regions of Southern California. Five of the subspecies of H. whipplei are individually described and discussed. Its relationship with its pollinator, Tegeticula maculata, is traced and documented throughout the process of a reproductive season. The project examines the historic uses of H. whipplei by the Native Americans as well as its current uses in the modern world. It includes field study lessons and Hesperoyucca recipes.
