An Elementary Habitat Curriculum For The Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve, Linda Jan Matthews Jan 2006

An Elementary Habitat Curriculum For The Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve, Linda Jan Matthews

Theses Digitization Project

This place-based curriculum, developed to address the alienation that children often feel from the natural environment around them, is an inquiry-based, hands-on teaching module for third and fourth grade children. It is designed around a one-day field trip to vernal pool habitat at the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve. Three pre-visit and three post-visit lessons are included. The lessons enable students to acquire required California academic content standards, and also incorporate education principles stated in California's Education and the Environment Initiative.

A New Model Of Evolution Education For Middle School Science, Walter Lee Owen

Theses Digitization Project

Proposes a new model for teaching inquiry and critical thinking in the middle school science classroom. This model will assist students in learning the evidence for evolution for themselves, as well as assisting them in developing skills in critical thinking and inquiry. The objective of this model is to create a more scientifically literate student body who can go on to pursue an even greater understanding of the nature of science.

Top-Down Modulation By Medial Prefrontal Cortex Of Basal Forebrain Activation Of Auditory Cortex During Learning, Candice Monique Chavez Jan 2006

Top-Down Modulation By Medial Prefrontal Cortex Of Basal Forebrain Activation Of Auditory Cortex During Learning, Candice Monique Chavez

Theses Digitization Project

The experiment tested the hypothesis that the acetylcholine (ACh) release in the rat auditory cortex is greater in rats undergoing auditory classical conditioning compared to rats in a truly random control paradigm where no associative learning takes place and that this is mediated by prefrontal afferent projections influencing the nucleus basalis magnocellularis (NBM), which in turn modulates ACh release in neocortex. Rats with bilateral ibotenic acid lesions of medial prefrontal and agranular insular cortices were tested in an auditory classical conditioning task while ACh was collected from the primary auditory cortex. It was hypothesized that lesions of these prefrontal areas …

Theory Development For The Use Of Dvd Technology Based On Brain Research, Cathleen Ruth Summerford Jan 2006

Theory Development For The Use Of Dvd Technology Based On Brain Research, Cathleen Ruth Summerford

Theses Digitization Project

This thesis will provide the importance to teachers how brain based research on visual and motion activities can be assimilated into technological innovations that are easily utilized in classroom instruction. This is significant because in order to ensure that best practices are being implented, teachers must recognize the validity of an approach, understand its applications and find it easily accessible on a routine basis.

Differences In Mnemonic Processing By Neurons In The Human Hippocampus And Parahippocampal Regions, Indre Viskontas, B. J. Knowlton, P. N. Steinmetz, I. Fried Jan 2006

Differences In Mnemonic Processing By Neurons In The Human Hippocampus And Parahippocampal Regions, Indre Viskontas, B. J. Knowlton, P. N. Steinmetz, I. Fried

Psychology

Different structures within the medial-temporal lobe likely make distinct contributions to declarative memory. In particular, several current psychological and computational models of memory predict that the hippocampus and parahippocampal regions play different roles in the formation and retrieval of declarative memories [e.g., Norman, K. A., & O'Reilly, R. C. Modeling hippocampal and neocortical contributions to recognition memory: A complementary-learning systems approach. Psychological Review, 110, 611-646, 2003]. Here, we examined the neuronal firing patterns in these two regions during recognition memory. Recording directly from neurons in humans, we find that cells in both regions respond to novel stimuli with an increase …

No Wonder The Kids Are Confused: The Relevance Of Science Education To Science, Deborah Corrigan Jan 2006

No Wonder The Kids Are Confused: The Relevance Of Science Education To Science, Deborah Corrigan

2006 - Boosting Science Learning - What will it take?

My experiences in science have left me wondering if we know what we want to achieve when educating students in science. An important question for science educators is: how authentic is the science presented in science classrooms? To answer this, science educators need a clear idea of what is they believe to be the purpose of science and then how they can portray that in their classrooms. This paper represents my journey in thinking about and researching of these ideas. It is my belief that, if we are to engage students in science, then science education has to be far …

Towards A Science Education For All: The Role Of Ideas, Evidence And Argument, Jonathan Osborne Jan 2006

Towards A Science Education For All: The Role Of Ideas, Evidence And Argument, Jonathan Osborne

2006 - Boosting Science Learning - What will it take?

This presentation offers a critical analysis of contemporary science education and the values on which it rests. Science education wrestles with two competing priorities: the need to educate the future citizen about science; and the need to provide the basic knowledge necessary for future scientists. It is argued that the evidence would suggest that it is the latter goal that predominates – a goal which exists at least, in part, in conflict with the needs of the majority who will not continue with science post compulsory education. The argument is advanced that there are four essential elements to any science …

Rethinking Science Education Through Rethinking Schooling, Jim Davies Jan 2006

Rethinking Science Education Through Rethinking Schooling, Jim Davies

2006 - Boosting Science Learning - What will it take?

The Australian Science and Mathematics School was designed explicitly to support a renaissance in the teaching of science and to improve the engagement of students in the disciplines of science through highly engaging authentic learning opportunities. The school has adopted an action research approach as a means of re-thinking the elements of schooling and of its science programs. Its working premise is that quality science education is embedded in quality schooling. Science is learned through an innovative interdisciplinary curriculum with a pedagogy aligned to the inquiry methodologies associated with deep engagement in scientific endeavour. The architecturally designed school has transformed …

Insect Visitation And Pollen Deposition In An Invaded Prairie Plant Community, Diane L. Larson, Ronald A. Royer, Margaret R. Royer Jan 2006

Insect Visitation And Pollen Deposition In An Invaded Prairie Plant Community, Diane L. Larson, Ronald A. Royer, Margaret R. Royer

United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications

Invasive plants with large flowering displays have been shown to compete with native plants for pollinator services, often to the detriment of native plant fitness. In this study, we compare the pollinator communities and pollen deposited on stigmas of native plant species within and away from stands of the invasive alien plant, leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula) at a large natural area in North Dakota, USA. Specifically, we ask if infestation influences (1) visitation rates and taxonomic composition of visitors to native flowers, and (2) the amount of conspecific pollen, number of pollen species, and proportion of heterospecific pollen on stigmas …

Watershed Physiography, Land Use, And Sediment Yield: A Case Study From Northwest Arkansas, Usa Jan 2006

Watershed Physiography, Land Use, And Sediment Yield: A Case Study From Northwest Arkansas, Usa

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Precision echo sounder surveys of bathymetry and sediment thickness of Lee Creek Reservoir and Lake Shepherd Springs (northwest Arkansas) were combined with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analyses of watershed digital elevation data and land use/land cover data to evaluate the relative importance of watershed area, watershed physiography, and land use/land cover on sediment yield and reservoir sedimentation. Both reservoirs have comparable surface areas, though Lee Creek Reservoir has approximately one-half the storage capacity of Lake Shepherd Springs (9.47 x 106 m3 versus 18.8 x 106 m3 ) due to the fact that its average depth is …
