Parents' goals, and the behaviors they motivate, were assumed to be a mechanism accounting for well-established effects of parenting style on children's school achievement. The sample consisted of 223 undergraduate college mothers enrolled in psychology courses. The results indicated that parents' use of an authoritative style was positively related to their adoption of learning goals with respect to their child, as evident, for example, in their use of a process focus and indirect homework assistance strategies. Moreover, mothers' use of …

The Effects Of (Rs)-Mcpg On Amphetamine-Induced Sensitization In Neonatal Rats, Fiona Yeuk-Lun Choi Jan 2006

The Effects Of (Rs)-Mcpg On Amphetamine-Induced Sensitization In Neonatal Rats, Fiona Yeuk-Lun Choi

Theses Digitization Project

The purpose of the study was to investigate the role of metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluR) in the ontogeny of amphetamine-induced behavioral sensitization. Eleven-day-old rat pups were given five daily bilateral infusions of the mGluR antagonist, (RS)-methyl-4-carboxyphenylglycine (MCPG) followed by a systemic injection of amphetamine and locomotor activity was measured. It was hypothesized that rats receving amphetamine pretreatment and an amphetamine challenge would exhibit a significant increase in activity, indicating short-term behavioral sensitization. As predicted, repeated amphetamine administration during the pretreatment phase produced progressively enhanced locomotor activity, indicating the development of behavioral sensitization. The effect of MCPG on locomotor activity appears …

Sustaining Child Outcomes From The Early Childhood Initiative Project: Evaluation Of School Age Developmentally Appropriate Practices, Amy Crans-Stafford

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Research has shown that high quality early childcare can provide positive changes in children's academic, social, and behavioral development. These positive early experiences are essential for children who are at developmental risk. Unfortunately, the positive outcomes from early education programs often diminish or disappear over time. Research has clearly shown the benefits of developmentally appropriate, high quality early childhood intervention. However, limited research has been conducted on the influence of developmentally appropriate practices on child outcomes during the early elementary school years. The purpose of this study was to examine the outcome of DAP from children who were enrolled in …

Winter Profile Of Plasma Sex Steroid Levels In Free-Living Male Western Diamond-Backed Rattlesnakes, Crotalus Atrox (Serpentes: Viperidae), Gordon W. Schuett, Roger A. Repp, Emily N. Taylor, Dale F. Denardo, Ryan L. Earley, Edward A. Van Kirk, William J. Murdoch

Biological Sciences

Recent field studies on the reproductive ecology of western diamond-backed rattlesnakes (Crotalus atrox) from populations in southern Arizona showed significant differences in the concentration of plasma sex steroids (testosterone, T; 5α-dihydrotestosterone, DHT; and 17β-estradiol, E2) throughout the active season (March–October), and peak levels were coincident with the two mating periods (late summer and early spring). There is, however, no information on levels of sex steroids during winter. Similar to most snakes, hibernating individuals of C. atrox are typically inaccessible, but in southern Arizona, where environmental conditions are typically mild during winter, adult males frequently bask at …

Phytoremediation: An Affordable Green Technology For The Clean-Up Of Metal-Contaminated Sites In Sri Lanka, Nishanta Rajakaruna, Kathleen M. Tompkins, Peter G. Pavicevic Jan 2006

Phytoremediation: An Affordable Green Technology For The Clean-Up Of Metal-Contaminated Sites In Sri Lanka, Nishanta Rajakaruna, Kathleen M. Tompkins, Peter G. Pavicevic

Biological Sciences

Phytoremediation, the use of plants to remediate sites contaminated with organic and inorganic pollutants, and phytomining, the technology involved in extracting the pollutants removed for commercial purposes, are rapidly-growing industries with multi-million dollar markets. This solar-driven, green technology is oftenfavored over more conventional methods of clean-up due to its low cost, low impact, and wider public acceptance. In this paper we discuss phytoremediation as a valid alternative for remediating contaminated bodies of soils and water in developing countries like Sri Lanka, where clean-up can often be stalled due to the high costs associated with traditional remediation technologies. While phytoremediation techniques …

Dream Hunter A National Wildlife Refuge Manager’S Memoir, Edward Crozier Jan 2006

Dream Hunter A National Wildlife Refuge Manager’S Memoir, Edward Crozier

South Dakota State University, Alumni Publications

(From the Preface)

The lives of my ancestors were often venturesome, sometimes dangerous and occasionally deadly. The Crozier Clan, who lived in Scotland, killed and stole from their neighbors on both sides of the border with England. In the 1600’s they emigrated to Ireland and in the 1700’s on to America, settling in the wilds of New York and serving in the Revolutionary War. Other Crozier ancestors pioneered in Illinois and Iowa and some served in the Civil War. One shirttail relative killed, with his bare fists, two brothers who had assaulted him for romancing their sister. On my maternal …
