Incorporating Spirituality Into The Therapeutic Setting: Safeguarding Ethical Use Of Spirituality Through Therapist Self-Reflection, Anna A. Berardi Phd. Jan 2006

Incorporating Spirituality Into The Therapeutic Setting: Safeguarding Ethical Use Of Spirituality Through Therapist Self-Reflection, Anna A. Berardi Phd.

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

As various mental health professions are increasingly open to incorporating the client's spirituality into the therapeutic process, therapists now more than ever feel greater freedom to discuss topics that heretofore may have been perceived as off limits. Yet, inviting discussion about a client's spirituality within the context of therapy is fraught with danger due in large part to the subjective nature of such a deeply personal, life changing, and in today's world, political aspect of human experience. This chapter invites the therapist to consider one's ethical obligations to the client before attempting to utilize a client's spirituality as a therapeutic …

Proprioception Of The Mind: Balancing Science And Spirit Through Emotional Intelligence, Debra Ann Fowler Jan 2006

Proprioception Of The Mind: Balancing Science And Spirit Through Emotional Intelligence, Debra Ann Fowler

MA TESOL Collection

This paper purports to demonstrate that teaching is an art form that not only relies on knowledge of theory and practice, but, even more importantly, also depends on a sensitivity to the needs of the individual student and the needs of the group. It is important for us, as teachers, to understand that in order to teach our students we need to reach them on an emotional level by implementing emotionally intelligent judgments throughout our interactions with them. It is not sufficient to be totally versed in the subject we are teaching, we must be continually aware of the emotional …

The Interface Between Self-Efficacy, Life Satisfaction, And Emotional And Informational Support For Korean Learners Acquiring English As A Second Language, Cheryl C.Y. Choe

MA TESOL Collection

The purpose of this study is to examine the interface between self-efficacy, life satisfaction, and emotional and informational support for Korean learners acquiring English as a Second Language. More specifically, the aim of this study is to explore the interface among psychological variables (e.g., speaking, reading, writing, and listening self-efficacy), mediating variables (e.g., emotional and informational support received from parents, teachers, and friends) and behavioral outcomes (e.g., life satisfaction within the family, at school/work, and in personal relationships with friends) by examining the linear structural model developed by Kim and Park (1998) and revised by Choe (2000). Self-efficacy is typically …

New Orleans, The Chesapeake, And The Future Of Environmental Assessment: Overcoming The Natural Resources Law Of Unintended Consequences, Erin Ryan

Scholarly Publications

This is a tale of two disappearing wetlands - those surrounding Louisiana's Gulf Coast and those fringing the Chesapeake Bay - each providing new insight into the old quandary of unintended consequences that lies at the center of natural resource management. Louisiana's losses follow three hundred years of natural resource engineering to accomplish effective flood control along the Mississippi River, while the Chesapeake losses follow implementation of among the most meticulous wetlands-protection programs of its time. And yet, New Orleans suffered a catastrophic flood, and Chesapeake wetlands continue to disappear. How could this happen? Call it the "Natural Resources Law …

Identity Formation In A Relational Context: A Person-Centered Analysis Of Troubled Youth, Larry F. Forthun, Marilyn J. Montgomery, Nancy J. Bell Jan 2006

Identity Formation In A Relational Context: A Person-Centered Analysis Of Troubled Youth, Larry F. Forthun, Marilyn J. Montgomery, Nancy J. Bell

Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling

The purpose of this study was to examine the identity formation of troubled youth (8 female and 12 male adolescents, ages 14–17) in an after-school treatment program for problem behavior. To achieve this goal we (a) garnered information from 2 identity interviews given 6 to 8 weeks apart, (b) adopted a qualitative, person-centered analytical strategy to identify identity profiles, and (c) examined the identity profiles within a relational context, focusing on the developmentally salient domains of parents and peers. Analyses revealed 5 identity profiles similar to the identity statuses previously described by Marcia and others, but with unique phenomenological differences. …

Propanil Exposure Induces Delayed But Sustained Abrogation Of Cell-Mediated Immunity Through Direct Interference With Cytotoxic T-Lymphocyte Effectors, James M. Sheil, Marc A. Frankenberry, Todd D. Schell, Kathleen M. Brundage, John B. Barnett

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The postemergent herbicide propanil (PRN; also known as 3,4-dichloropropionanilide) is used on rice and wheat crops and has well-known immunotoxic effects on various compartments of the immune system, including T-helper lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, and macrophages. It is unclear, however, whether PRN also adversely affects cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs), the primary (1°) effectors of cell-mediated immunity. In this study we examined both the direct and indirect effects of PRN exposure on CTL activation and effector cell function to gauge its likely impact on cell-mediated immunity. Initial experiments addressed whether PRN alters the class I major histocompatibility complex (MHC) pathway for antigen …

Systemic Microvascular Dysfunction And Inflammation After Pulmonary Particulate Matter Exposure, Timothy R. Nurkiewicz, Dale W. Porter, Mark Barger, Lyndell Millecchia, K Murali K Rao, Paul J. Marvar, Ann F. Hubbs, Vincent Castranova, Matthew A. Boegehold Jan 2006

Systemic Microvascular Dysfunction And Inflammation After Pulmonary Particulate Matter Exposure, Timothy R. Nurkiewicz, Dale W. Porter, Mark Barger, Lyndell Millecchia, K Murali K Rao, Paul J. Marvar, Ann F. Hubbs, Vincent Castranova, Matthew A. Boegehold

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The epidemiologic association between pulmonary exposure to ambient particulate matter (PM) and cardiovascular dysfunction is well known, but the systemic mechanisms that drive this effect remain unclear. We have previously shown that acute pulmonary exposure to PM impairs or abolishes endothelium-dependent arteriolar dilation in the rat spinotrapezius muscle. The purpose of this study was to further characterize the effect of pulmonary PM exposure on systemic microvascular function and to identify local inflammatory events that may contribute to these effects. Rats were intratracheally instilled with residual oil fly ash (ROFA) or titanium dioxide at 0.1 or 0.25 mg/rat 24 hr before …

Genomic Structure And Expression Of Uncoupling Protein 2 Genes In Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Issa Coulibaly, Scott A. Gahr, Yniv Palti, Jianbo Yao, Caird E. Rexroad Iii Jan 2006

Genomic Structure And Expression Of Uncoupling Protein 2 Genes In Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Issa Coulibaly, Scott A. Gahr, Yniv Palti, Jianbo Yao, Caird E. Rexroad Iii

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Background

Uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) belongs to the superfamily of mitochondrial anion carriers that dissociate the respiratory chain from ATP synthesis. It has been determined that UCP2 plays a role in several physiological processes such as energy expenditure, body weight control and fatty acid metabolism in several vertebrate species. We report the first characterization of UCP2 s in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).

Results

Two UCP2 genes were identified in the rainbow trout genome, UCP2A and UCP2B. These genes are 93% similar in their predicted amino acid sequences and display the same genomic structure as other vertebrates (8 …

How Exposures To Biologics Influence The Induction And Incidence Of Asthma, Darryl C. Zeldin, Peyton Eggleston, Martin Chapman, Giovanni Piedimonte, Harard Renz, David Peden Jan 2006

How Exposures To Biologics Influence The Induction And Incidence Of Asthma, Darryl C. Zeldin, Peyton Eggleston, Martin Chapman, Giovanni Piedimonte, Harard Renz, David Peden

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

A number of environmental factors can affect the development and severity of allergy and asthma; however, it can be argued that the most significant inhaled agents that modulate the development of these conditions are biologics. Sensitization to environmental allergens is an important risk factor for the development of asthma. Innate immune responses are often mediated by receptors on mononuclear cells whose primary ligands arise from microorganisms. Many pathogens, especially viruses, target epithelial cells and affect the host immune response to those pathogens. The acquired immune response to an allergen is influenced by the nature of the innate immune system. Products …

A Novel Role For 3, 4-Dichloropropionanilide (Dcpa) In The Inhibition Of Prostate Cancer Cell Migration, Proliferation, And Hypoxia-Inducible Factor 1alpha Expression, Bing-Hua Jiang, Ling-Zhi Liu, Rosana Schafer, Daniel C. Flynn, John B. Barnett Jan 2006

A Novel Role For 3, 4-Dichloropropionanilide (Dcpa) In The Inhibition Of Prostate Cancer Cell Migration, Proliferation, And Hypoxia-Inducible Factor 1alpha Expression, Bing-Hua Jiang, Ling-Zhi Liu, Rosana Schafer, Daniel C. Flynn, John B. Barnett

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Background

The amide class compound, 3, 4-dichloropropionanilide (DCPA) is known to affect multiple signaling pathways in lymphocyte and macrophage including the inhibition of NF-κB ability. However, little is known about the effect of DCPA in cancer cells. Hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) regulates the expression of many genes including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), heme oxygenase 1, inducible nitric oxide synthase, aldolase, enolase, and lactate dehydrogenase A. HIF-1 expression is associated with tumorigenesis and angiogenesis.

Methods

We used Transwell assay to study cell migration, and used immunoblotting to study specific protein expression in the cells.

Results

In this report, we demonstrate …

Open Access, Law, Knowledge, Copyrights, Dominance And Subordination, Ann Bartow Jan 2006

Open Access, Law, Knowledge, Copyrights, Dominance And Subordination, Ann Bartow

Law Faculty Scholarship

The concept of open access to legal knowledge is at the surface a very appealing one. A citizenry that is well informed about the law may be more likely to comply with legal dictates and proscriptions, or at a minimum, will be aware of the consequences for not doing so. What is less apparent, however, is whether an open access approach to legal knowledge is realistically attainable without fundamental changes to the copyright laws that would recalibrate the power balance between content owners and citizens desiring access to interpretive legal resources. A truly useful application of open access principles would …

Fair Use And The Fairer Sex: Gender, Feminism, And Copyright Law, Ann Bartow Jan 2006

Fair Use And The Fairer Sex: Gender, Feminism, And Copyright Law, Ann Bartow

Law Faculty Scholarship

Copyright laws are written and enforced to help certain groups of people assert and retain control over the resources generated by creative productivity. Because those people are predominantly male, the copyright infrastructure plays a role, largely unexamined by legal scholars, in helping to sustain the material and economic inequality between women and men. This essay considers some of the ways in which gender issues and copyright laws intersect, proposes a feminist critique of the copyright legal regime which advocates low levels of copyright protections, and asserts the importance of considering the social and economic disparities between women and men when …

It’S Not About The Money: The Role Of Preferences, Cognitive Biases And Heuristics Among Professional Athletes, Michael Mccann Jan 2006

It’S Not About The Money: The Role Of Preferences, Cognitive Biases And Heuristics Among Professional Athletes, Michael Mccann

Law Faculty Scholarship

Professional athletes are often regarded as selfish, greedy, and out-of-touch with regular people. They hire agents who are vilified for negotiating employment contracts that occasionally yield compensation in excess of national gross domestic products. Professional athletes are thus commonly assumed to most value economic remuneration, rather than the love of the game or some other intangible, romanticized inclination.

Lending credibility to this intuition is the rational actor model, a law and economic precept which presupposes that when individuals are presented with a set of choices, they rationally weigh costs and benefits, and select the course of action that maximizes their …

Portrait: Anatole Krattiger—Intellectual Property Management In The Global Public Interest, Stanley P. Kowalski

Law Faculty Scholarship

[Excerpt] "What do cows in green Alpine landscapes have in common with IP? Not much unless you ask Dr. Krattiger. As a young farmer in his native Switzerland, and later in the South of France where he cultivated vineyards, he developed a practical approach to solving problems. During these formative years as a farmer, Dr. Krattiger particularly enjoyed tending dairy herds in the green pastures of the Swiss Alps. There he learned and practiced the art of fine cheese making: an age-old and fundamental application of traditional biotechnology. Working in sight of the sublime peaks of the Alps must have …

Wikipdf - A Tool To Help Scientists Understand The Literature Of The Biological, Health, And Life Sciences, David Calloway

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Biological sciences literature can be extraordinarily difficult to understand. Papers are commonly filled with terminology unique to a particular sub-discipline. Readers with expertise outside that sub-discipline often have difficulty understanding information the author is trying to convey. The WikiPDF project that is the subject of this thesis helps readers understand the biological sciences literature by automatically generating a customized glossary for each page of any technical paper available in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) format. WikiPDF relies on the Wikipedia®, an on-line encyclopedia created and supported by a host of volunteers, as a source of definitions used in its glossaries. …
