The Sociopolitical Construction Of Race And Literary Representations Of The Biracial Subject, Kara Fontenot
The Sociopolitical Construction Of Race And Literary Representations Of The Biracial Subject, Kara Fontenot
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Twentieth-century American literature incorporates interracial and biracial themes that bring to light the often unnamed and unrecognized biracial identities of many Americans. Unfortunately, despite the potential value for a deeper understanding of the construction of race, these themes have seldom been seriously considered in the context of reevaluating the nature of the system that creates racial labels and categories until the recent emergence of postmodern critical theories. This thesis examines the black-white interracial themes and biracial protagonists in Nella Larsen's Quicksand (1928) and Danzy Senna's Caucasia (1998) in order to explore the texts' representations of systems of hegemonic power that …

Ec1778 Field Windbreaks, Jim Brandle, Laurie Hodges
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Agricultural producers face many challenges as they try to balance efficient production systems with increasing environmental standards. For these systems to be successful, they must optimize the balance between inputs and field production. Field windbreaks are one way to increase yields while at the same time reducing inputs and improving both environmental quality and production efficiency. Windbreaks reduce wind speed and alter the microclimate in sheltered areas. Filed windbreaks reduce wind erosion and the damage to crops caused by wind-blown soil. They improve water use efficiency, reduce risks associated with drought, and manage blowing snow.
Field windbreaks provide positive economic …

Application Of The 1996 Nrc To Protein And Energy Nutrition Of Range Cattle, H. H. Patterson, D. C. Adams, T. J. Klopfenstein, G. P. Lardy
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Based on applications of the 1996 National Research Council (NRC) Nutrient Requirement of Beef Cattle (2000 update) model at our laboratories and on use of the model to evaluate published literature, it is our assessment that the NRC model (Level 1) represents an advancement in nutrient requirements of grazing cattle. We evaluated 8 published studies (35 treatment observations) to compare observed changes in body condition score (BCS) to those predicted by the NRC model, and to develop criteria to help with application of the model to range cattle nutrition. When in vitro organic matter disappearance (IVOMD) of grazed diets was …

Variation In The U.S. Photoperiod Insensitive Sorghum Collection For Chemical And Nutritional Traits, Tisha L. Hooks, Jeffrey F. Pedersen, D. B. Marx, K. P. Vogel
Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications
Screening germplasm for chemical and nutritional content can be expensive and time consuming. Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and application of geostatistical models can make screening more efficient. The objectives of this study were to utilize these technologies to: (i) generate chemical and nutritional values for the U.S. photoperiod insensitive sorghum collection, (ii) describe variability for those traits, (iii) identify accessions in the highest and lowest 1% for each trait, and (iv) describe relationships among the accessions. Accessions were grown at Ithaca, NE, during 2001 and 2002. Samples of grain were scanned and NIRS equations developed for starch, fat, crude protein, …

Trans-10, Cis-12 Conjugated Linoleic Acid Causes Inflammation And Delipidation Of White Adipose Tissue In Mice: A Microarray And Histological Analysis, P. Christopher Larosa, Jess L. Miner, Yuannan Xia, You Zhou, Stephen D. Kachman, Michael Fromm
Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications
A combined histological and microarray analysis of the white adipose tissue (WAT) of mice fed trans-10, cis-12 conjugated linoleic acid (t10c12 CLA) was performed to better define functional responses. Mice fed t10c12 CLA for 14 days lost 85% of WAT mass, 95% of adipocyte lipid droplet volume, and 15 or 47% of the number of adipocytes and total cells, respectively. Microarray profiling of replicated pools (n = 2 per day x diet) of control and treated mice (n = 140) at seven time points after 1–17 days of t10c12 CLA feeding found between 2,682 and 4,216 …

Transpersonal Education: Problems, Prospects And Challenges, Paul F. Cunningham
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Despite its substantial scientific, academic, and professional achievements, transpersonal psychology has
not been fully incorporated within traditional undergraduate psychology curricula. One reason is conventional
psychology’s prejudiced perception of humanity’s spiritual nature. Other reasons lie within the field
of transpersonal psychology itself, including the lack of agreed-upon general curricular models, absence of
normative educational (student) outcomes, unstructured courses with restricted content coverage, and conceptual
and methodological disagreements among experts. One of the most pressing challenges facing contemporary
transpersonal education is the publication of an authoritative, standard textbook that would
effectively introduce undergraduate students to transpersonal psychology and facilitate the progress of …
Attachment Theory And Wellbeing For The Young Person In Residential Care: The Provision Of A Second Chance Secure Base For The Child In Crisis, Gay Graham
Articles
Aristotle argued that happiness for humans is not possible in the absence of reciprocal, affective relationships or friendships (Sherman 1991). Such relationships for children are only possible in the context of satisfactory attachments which provide for them a secure base from which to explore their environment (Bowlby 1988). Young people placed in the child welfare system, particularly those in residential care, often experience a system that is problem focused, intent on physical protection and control, where warm reciprocal relationships are not prioritised. This paper states that young people in residential care, whose primary attachments, whatever their quality, have been disrupted; …

The Hydrodynamic Effects Of Shape And Size Change During Reconfiguration Of A Flexible Macroalga, Michael L. Boller, Emily Carrington
The Hydrodynamic Effects Of Shape And Size Change During Reconfiguration Of A Flexible Macroalga, Michael L. Boller, Emily Carrington
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Rocky intertidal organisms experience large hydrodynamic forces due to high water velocities created by breaking waves. Flexible organisms, like macroalgae, often experience lower drag than rigid organisms because their shape and size change as velocity increases. This phenomenon, known as reconfiguration, has been previously quantified as Vogel's E, a measure of the relationship between velocity and drag. While this method is very useful for comparing reconfiguration among organisms it does not address the mechanisms of reconfiguration, and its application to predicting drag is problematic. The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to examine the mechanisms of reconfiguration by …
Seasonal Variation In Mussel Byssal Thread Mechanics, Gretchen M. Moeser, Emily Carrington
Seasonal Variation In Mussel Byssal Thread Mechanics, Gretchen M. Moeser, Emily Carrington
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
The blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, attaches itself to the substrate by producing a radially arranged complex of collagenous byssal threads. The strength of byssal attachment, or tenacity, has been shown to vary seasonally on Rhode Island shores, increasing twofold in spring in comparison with fall. It was previously assumed that this seasonality was due to increased thread production following periods of increased wave action; however, recent findings do not support this view. As an alternate hypothesis, this study evaluates the contribution of seasonal changes in the material properties of byssal threads to an annual cycle in mussel attachment …
Seasonal Influence Of Wave Action On Thread Production In Mytilus Edulis, Gretchen M. Moeser, Heather Leba, Emily Carrington
Seasonal Influence Of Wave Action On Thread Production In Mytilus Edulis, Gretchen M. Moeser, Heather Leba, Emily Carrington
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
The blue mussel Mytilus edulis maintains a strong attachment to the substrate in high energy environments by producing byssal threads. On the shores of Rhode Island, USA, mussel attachment strength increases twofold in spring compared to that in the fall. While many factors could influence attachment strength (temperature, food supply, predator cues, etc.), it has been proposed that the variation observed is primarily due to increased thread production during winter and spring in response to increased wave action. This study evaluates the influence of three aspects of wave action on the thread production of M. edulis. Mussels were exposed …

Directionality Of Point Mutation And 5-Methylcytosine Deamination Rates In The Chimpanzee Genome, Cizhong Jiang, Zhongming Zhao
Psychiatry Publications
Background The pattern of point mutation is important for studying mutational mechanisms, genome evolution, and diseases. Previous studies of mutation direction were largely based on substitution data from a limited number of loci. To date, there is no genome-wide analysis of mutation direction or methylation-dependent transition rates in the chimpanzee or its categorized genomic regions.
Results In this study, we performed a detailed examination of mutation direction in the chimpanzee genome and its categorized genomic regions using 588,918 SNPs whose ancestral alleles could be inferred by mapping them to human genome sequences. The C→T (G→A) changes occurred most frequently in …
