Learning Styles Affecting Student Learning In Online Based Education Systems, Christina Schmunk
Learning Styles Affecting Student Learning In Online Based Education Systems, Christina Schmunk
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
In the last few decades various learning theories emerged characterizing the strengths and preferences people have in the ways they assimilate and process new ideas and concepts. In this capstone we introduce the results of an exploratory pilot study which examines how learning styles or multiple intelligences influence performance in students who used an online homework system in their pre-service teacher math content courses at CSUMB. There is literature concerning whether it is important for educators to be able to adapt their teaching to adjust to their students' multiple learning styles. This study will be able to provide guidance towards …
Transsexual Individuals’ Experiences In Psychotherapy : A Partial Replication, Elizabeth Ehrmann
Transsexual Individuals’ Experiences In Psychotherapy : A Partial Replication, Elizabeth Ehrmann
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
For many individuals, the topic of transsexualism is a very taboo and stigmatized subject; that is why many transsexual individuals seek psychotherapy. The goal of this study is to discover what transsexual individuals' experiences in psychotherapy are like. The sample consisted of 19 transsexual participants (13 Male-to-Female, 6 Female-to-Male) and each completed a 41-item survey that focused on demographics, transitioning, reasons for seeking therapy, what changed in their lives as a result of therapy, and feelings about the participants' professional caregiver. Although not statistically significant, there was a pattern that correlated level of education achieved with where the individual is …

Trace Element Concentrations In The Pacific Harbor Seal, Phoca Vitulina Richardii, In Central And Northern California : A Thesis ..., Tiffini Jo Brookens
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
To determine trace element concentrations in the Pacific harbor seal (Phoca vitulina richardii), live (n=189) and dead seals (n=53) were sampled throughout central and northern California from March 2003 to January 2005. Total mercury (THg) concentrations were determined in blood and hair of live harbor seals and hair and liver of dead harbor seals. Concentrations of monomethyl mercury (MeHg), selenium (Se), and lead (Pb) additionally were determined in liver of dead harbor seals. To assess trophic level, carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes were examined in liver. Age class assignments of live harbor seals were based on morphometrics, and ages of …
Mercury Methylation In Sediments From Coastal And Sierra Watersheds : Implications For Methylmercury Mitigation In The San Francisco Bay-Delta Complex, Tom Stewart Kimball
Mercury Methylation In Sediments From Coastal And Sierra Watersheds : Implications For Methylmercury Mitigation In The San Francisco Bay-Delta Complex, Tom Stewart Kimball
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The San Francisco Bay-Delta Complex is contaminated with mercury, and many fish tissue concentrations exceed US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) limits for human consumption. Much of the mercury is historic and can be traced to contaminated sediments from hydraulic mining. Today, contamination continues from two major sources: mercury mines in the coast range and gold mines in the Sierra foothills. Mercury from both watershed sources is methylated in receiving sediments within the Delta. Little is known about the relative bioavailability and chemical reactivity of this mercury once incorporated into Delta sediments. To prioritize mitigation options, this study assessed methylation …

An Optimal Brain Can Be Composed Of Conflicting Agents, Adi Livnat, Nicholas Pippenger
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
Many behaviors have been attributed to internal conflict within the animal and human mind. However, internal conflict has not been reconciled with evolutionary principles, in that it appears maladaptive relative to a seamless decision-making process. We study this problem through a mathematical analysis of decision-making structures. We find that, under natural physiological limitations, an optimal decision-making system can involve “selfish” agents that are in conflict with one another, even though the system is designed for a single purpose. It follows that conflict can emerge within a collective even when natural selection acts on the level of the collective only.

Distributions Of Exotic Plants In Eastern Asia And North America, Qinfeng Guo, Hong Qian, Robert E. Ricklefs, Weimin Xi
Distributions Of Exotic Plants In Eastern Asia And North America, Qinfeng Guo, Hong Qian, Robert E. Ricklefs, Weimin Xi
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Although some plant traits have been linked to invasion success, the possible effects of regional factors, such as diversity, habitat suitability, and human activity are not well understood. Each of these mechanisms predicts a different pattern of distribution at the regional scale. Thus, where climate and soils are similar, predictions based on regional hypotheses for invasion success can be tested by comparisons of distributions in the source and receiving regions. Here, we analyse the native and alien geographic ranges of all 1567 plant species that have been introduced between eastern Asia and North America or have been introduced to both …

Conspecific Attraction In A Grassland Bird, The Baird’S Sparrow, Marissa A. Ahlering, Douglas H. Johnson, John Faaborg
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Territorial songbirds generally use song to defend territories and attract mates, but conspecific song may also serve as a cue to attract other male songbirds to a breeding site. Although known to occur in some colonial and forest-associated species, only recently have investigators examined conspecific attraction in grassland species. We used a playback experiment to examine the possible role of conspecific attraction for males searching for potentially suitable breeding habitat in a grassland specialist, the Baird’s Sparrow(Ammodramus bairdii). Experimental playback plots and control plots with similar landscape and vegetation characteristics were established at two sites in North Dakota. …
The Many Faces Of Replication, Douglas Johnson
The Many Faces Of Replication, Douglas Johnson
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Replication is one of the three cornerstones of inference from experimental studies, the other two being control and randomization. In fact, replication is essential for the benefits of randomization to apply. In addition to ordinary replication, the repetition of treatments within a study, two other levels of replication have been identified. Pseudoreplication, a termed coined by Stuart Hurlbert, generally involves making multiple measurements on experiment units (which is commendable) and treating them as if they reflected independent responses to treatment (which is erroneous). Metareplication is a higher level of replication in which entire studies are repeated. Scientists are too much …

Survival Of Adult Female Elk In Yellowstone Following Wolf Restoration, Shaney Evans, L. David Mech, P. J. White, Glen A. Sergeant
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Counts of northern Yellowstone elk (Cervus elaphus) in northwestern Wyoming and adjacent Montana, USA, have decreased at an average rate of 6–8% per year since wolves (Canis lupus) were reintroduced in 1995. Population growth rates of elk are typically sensitive to variations in adult female survival; populations that are stable or increasing exhibit high adult female survival. We used survival records for 85 radio-collared adult female elk 1–19 years old to estimate annual survival from March 2000 to February 2004. Weighted average annual survival rates were approximately 0.83 (95% CI=0.77–0.89) for females 1–15 years old and …
Estimated Age Structure Of Wolves In Northeastern Minnesota, L. David Mech
Estimated Age Structure Of Wolves In Northeastern Minnesota, L. David Mech
United States Geological Survey, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center: Publications
Information about population age structures is useful to understand survival rates, longevity, and population turnover. However, little such information is available about wolf (Canis lupus) populations. Mech (1970) estimated age structures of wolf-population age structure from pup:adult ratios applying various demographic assumptions, but no direct information has been published to test his estimate. Mech et al. (1998) aged 94 live wolves darted in Denali National Park and Preserve, Alaska, USA, but the estimates of wolf ages were based on educated guesses because no technique was available for aging live wolves. Since then, Gipson et al. (2000) published criteria …

Invasive Species Management: Ensuring The 'Cure' Is Not Worse Than The Condition, Sharlene E. Sing, Robert K.D. Peterson, Bruce D. Maxwell
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The challenge in effectively managing invasive species arises out of our subjective response to the problem: 1) these species do not belong in our ecosystems; and 2) their impact on our ecosystems will be negative. These visceral responses typically dove-tail into the fundamental management objective: get rid of it! Society promotes the idea that good management is timely, and the best approach is to catch an invasive species before it reaches exponential population growth and becomes widespread. Although this is a sound approach, multiple examples illustrate that it is not universally applicable. Exotic species that are intentionally introduced either for …
Microscopic Reactive Diffusion Of Uranium In The Contaminated Sediments At Hanford, United States, Chongxuan Liu, John M. Zachara, Wassana Yantasee, Paul D. Majors, James Mckinley
Microscopic Reactive Diffusion Of Uranium In The Contaminated Sediments At Hanford, United States, Chongxuan Liu, John M. Zachara, Wassana Yantasee, Paul D. Majors, James Mckinley
United States Department of Energy: Publications
Microscopic and spectroscopic analyses of uranium-contaminated sediments from select locations at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Hanford site have revealed that sorbed uranium (U) often exists as uranyl precipitates associated with intragrain fractures of granitic clasts. The release of U to contacting fluids appears to be controlled by intragrain ion diffusion coupled with the dissolution kinetics of the precipitates that exist in the form of Na-boltwoodite. Here we present a coupled microscopic reactive diffusion model for the contaminated sediment on the basis of experimental measurements of intragrain diffusivity in the granitic lithic fragments and the dissolution kinetics of synthetic …

Reducing Long-Term Remedial Costs By Transport Modeling Optimization, David Becker, Barbara Minsker, Robert Greenwald, Yan Zhang, Karla Harre, Kathleen Yager, Chunmiao Zheng, Richard Peralta
United States Navy: Publications
The Department of Defense (DoD) Environmental Security Technology Certification Program and the Environmental Protection Agency sponsored a project to evaluate the benefits and utility of contaminant transport simulation-optimization algorithms against traditional (trial and error) modeling approaches. Three pump-and-treat facilities operated by the DoD were selected for inclusion in the project. Three optimization formulations were developed for each facility and solved independently by three modeling teams (two using simulation-optimization algorithms and one applying trial-and-error methods). The results clearly indicate that simulation-optimization methods are able to search a wider range of well locations and flow rates and identify better solutions than current …

Primaquine: Report From Cdc Expert Meeting On Malaria Chemoprophylaxis I, David R. Hill, J. Kevin Baird, Monica E. Parise, Linda S. Lewis, Edward T. Ryan, Alan J. Magill
United States Navy: Publications
Primaquine phosphate has been used for preventing relapse of Plasmodium vivax and P. ovale malaria since the early 1950s, based on its ability to kill latent (hypnozoite) and developing liver stages of these parasites. There are three uses for primaquine in malaria: radical cure of established infection with P. vivax or P. ovale malaria; presumptive anti-relapse therapy (PART; terminal prophylaxis) in persons with extensive exposure to these parasites; and primary prophylaxis against all malaria species. All persons for whom primaquine is being considered must have a glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) enzyme level checked before use, and persons who have a deficiency …

Sulfation Of Tibolone Metabolites By Human Postmenopausal Liver And Small Intestinal Sulfotransferases (Sults), Min Wang, Christopher C. Ebmeier, John R. Olin, Robert J. Anderson
United States Department of Veterans Affairs: Publications
Sulfation is a major pathway in humans for the biotransformation of steroid hormones and structurally related therapeutic agents. Tibolone is a synthetic steroid used for the treatment for climacteric symptoms and postmenopausal osteoporosis. Sulfation inactivates the hydroxylated metabolites, 3α-hydroxytibolone (3α -OH-tibolone) and 3β-hydroxytibolone (3β-OH-tibolone), and contributes to the regulation of tissue responses to tibolone. We detected SULT1A1, SULT1A3, SULT1E1 and SULT2A1 mRNA expression by RT-PCR in postmenopausal liver and small intestine. Liver pool (n = 5) SULT activities measured with tibolone substrates reflected COS-1 expressed SULT2A1 and SULT1E1 activities. Liver SULT2A1 activity (1.8±0.3 units/mg protein, n = 8, mean±SEM), and …

Basic Materials Research Programs At The U.S. Air Force Office Of Scientific Research, Herbert C. Carlson, K. C. Goretta
United States Air Force: Publications
The Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) annually sponsors approximately 5000 research scientists at 1000 universities and laboratories, generating about 10,000 Ph.D. graduates per decade, all expected to publish their basic research findings in peer-reviewed journals. After a brief introduction of the nature of AFOSR’s support to basic research in the U.S. and international scientific communities, work it supports at the frontiers of materials science is highlighted. One focused research theme that drives our investment is the MEANS program. It begins with the end in mind; materials are designed with practicable manufacture as an explicit initial goal. AFOSR’s broad …
