Contribution Of Sediment To High Enterococcus Counts Along The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Jason Townsend, Jennifer A. Ufnar, David F. Ufnar, Shiao Y. Wang, R.D. Ellender Jan 2006

Contribution Of Sediment To High Enterococcus Counts Along The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Jason Townsend, Jennifer A. Ufnar, David F. Ufnar, Shiao Y. Wang, R.D. Ellender

Presentations

Enumeration of enterococci (EN) bacteria in water is an USEPA approved indicator of fecal pollution and the possible presence of enteric pathogens. Along the northern Gulf of Mexico, the water is shallow with a high organic and particulate load because of the Mississippi River discharge. Disturbance of coastal sediments during wind/wave action caused either by the weather or human activities may increase bacterial counts as a result of increased EN persistence in the water column and/or resuspension of EN in the sediment. The goals of this project are to determine the relationship between organic content and EN counts in the …

Methanogens As Ruminant-Specific Indicators Of Fecal Pollution, Jennifer A. Ufnar, Shiao Y. Wang, R.D. Ellender Jan 2006

Methanogens As Ruminant-Specific Indicators Of Fecal Pollution, Jennifer A. Ufnar, Shiao Y. Wang, R.D. Ellender

Presentations

Tracking the source of fecal pollution in surface waters has traditionally focused on the origin of enteric indicators including coliforms, enterococci, or E. coli. Recently, questions of genetic variability and environmental persistence have encouraged researchers to investigate additional animal specific indicators of fecal pollution. To date only eubacteria have been utilized as markers of human and animal-specific pollution. Here we report domestic ruminant-specific markers of fecal pollution utilizing methanogens found in the rumen. PCR primers for the mcrA gene of Methanomicrobium mobile (MMmcrA) and the nifH gene of Methanobrevibacter ruminantium (Mrnif-1) were designed, tested, and used to detect ruminant-specific pollution …

Investigating Life History Differences Between Finetooth Sharks, Carcharhinus Isodon, In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico And The Western North Atlantic Ocean, J. Marcus Drymon, William B. Driggers Iii, Douglas Oakley, Glenn F. Ulrich Jan 2006

Investigating Life History Differences Between Finetooth Sharks, Carcharhinus Isodon, In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico And The Western North Atlantic Ocean, J. Marcus Drymon, William B. Driggers Iii, Douglas Oakley, Glenn F. Ulrich

Gulf of Mexico Science

The life history of the finetooth shark, Carcharhinus isodon, off South Carolina was studied by determining age, growth, and size and age at maturity. These data were compared to a recent study describing the same parameters for finetooth sharks in the northern Gulf of Mexico. Cervical vertebrae were extracted from 168 specimens (71 males and 97 females), ranging in size from 376 to 1,262 mm fork length (FL), and prepared for age analysis using standard techniques. Sex-specific von Bertalanffy growth models were generated and yielded the following growth equations: Lt = 1,311 mm FL (1 - e-0.19(t …

Feeding Periodicity And Prey Habitat Preference Of Red Snapper, Lutjanus Campechanus (Poey, 1860) On Alabama Artificial Reefs, Jessica R. Mccawley, James H. Cowan Jr., Robert L. Shipp Jan 2006

Feeding Periodicity And Prey Habitat Preference Of Red Snapper, Lutjanus Campechanus (Poey, 1860) On Alabama Artificial Reefs, Jessica R. Mccawley, James H. Cowan Jr., Robert L. Shipp

Gulf of Mexico Science

Conclusive understanding of the role temperate artificial reefs play in the trophic dynamics of Lutjanus campechanus (Poey, 1860) is limited. Thus, diel feeding habits of red snapper on artificial reefs were examined using gut fullness, diet composition, and prey habitat preferences. Red snapper were collected by hook and line from artificial reefs off Alabama in July and Aug. 2000. Examination of stomach contents found red snapper feeding upon fish, demersal crustaceans, and pelagic zooplankton. Although other studies suggest that lutjanids primarily feed nocturnally, red snapper in this study fed throughout the day and night. Significant differences in gut fullness were …

A New Shrimp Host For Parabopyrella Lata (Nierstrasz And Brender À Brandis, 1929) (Crustacea: Isopoda: Bopyridae) From The Florida Gulf Coast: A Novel Host-Parasite Relationship Or A Case Of Mistaken Identity?, Christopher B. Boyko Jan 2006

Boyko

Gulf of Mexico Science

Identification of a bopyrid isopod found on a specimen of Lysmata wurdemanni (Gibbes) showed that it was not conspecific with the only known bopyrid parasite found on that host, Parabopyrella mortensi (Nierstrasz and Brender à Brandis, 1929). Instead, it is identifiable with a congeneric species, Parabopyrella lata (Nierstrasz and Brender à Brandis, 1929 ), formerly known only from alpheid shrimp hosts. A brief discussion of the implications of this finding on the question of level of host specificity is given, and evidence suggesting an accidental occurrence of the parasite on the host, rather than a successful host switch.

Travel Times Of Passive Drifters From The Western Caribbean To The Gulf Of Mexico And Florida-Bahamas, Alexis Lugo-Fernández Jan 2006

Travel Times Of Passive Drifters From The Western Caribbean To The Gulf Of Mexico And Florida-Bahamas, Alexis Lugo-Fernández

Gulf of Mexico Science

Travel times of passive drifters along five predetermined routes connecting coral reefs in the western Caribbean with reefs in the Gulf of Mexico and FloridaBahamas are provided. Mean surface velocities used to estimate time were derived from ship drifts and from satellite-tracked drifters. Estimated times include 55-135 d between Belize and the Flower Garden Banks, 26-42 d between Belize/Yucatan and Florida-Bahamas, and 31 d from Campeche to Vera Cruz. These results agree with the time of waterborne pathogen arrival at the Flower Garden Banks from Belize and an oil slick reaching Texas from Campeche.

Age And Growth Of Sand Seatrout (Cynoscion Arenarius) In The Estuarine Waters Of The Eastern Gulf Of Mexico, Douglas J. Nemeth, Jered B. Jackson, Anthony R. Knapp, Caleb H. Purtlebaugh Jan 2006

Age And Growth Of Sand Seatrout (Cynoscion Arenarius) In The Estuarine Waters Of The Eastern Gulf Of Mexico, Douglas J. Nemeth, Jered B. Jackson, Anthony R. Knapp, Caleb H. Purtlebaugh

Gulf of Mexico Science

Sand seatrout, Cynoscion arenarius, support a large recreational fishery in Florida, but information on the population characteristics of the species is lacking. Sand seatrout were collected incidentally during random sampling conducted by a fisheries-independent monitoring program in three Florida estuaries from Oct. 2001 through Sept. 2003. The collection gear included a 183-m haul seine (38- mm stretch mesh), a 183-m purse seine (51-mm stretch mesh), and a 6.1-m otter trawl (3-mm mesh liner). The sample was supplemented in one estuary with fish captured by hook and line. For aging, otoliths were extracted and sectioned from specimens greater than 90 …

Seasonal Migration Of Immature Kemp's Ridley Turtles (Lepidochelys Kempii Garman) Along The West Coast Of Florida, Jeffrey R. Schmid, Wayne N. Witzell Jan 2006

Seasonal Migration Of Immature Kemp's Ridley Turtles (Lepidochelys Kempii Garman) Along The West Coast Of Florida, Jeffrey R. Schmid, Wayne N. Witzell

Gulf of Mexico Science

Six immature Kemp's ridley turtles (Lepidochelys hempii) were monitored via satellite telemetry to investigate their winter migration on the west coast of Florida. All turtles departed from Cedar Keys in late Nov., migrated southward in Dec., and overwintered in offshore waters from Anclote Keys to Captiva Island during Jan., 120 km and 296 km from Cedar Keys, respectively. Turtles migrated northward in Feb. and began returning to Cedar Keys in March. Five of the turtles occupied relatively small (3.8-48.0 km2) postmigration foraging ranges through Aug. The sixth turtle returned to Waccasassa Bay, east of Cedar Keys, …

Effects Of Exotic Submerged Aquatic Vegetation On Waterfowl In The Mobile-Tensaw Delta, M.E. Goecker, J.F. Valentine, S.A. Sklenar

Gulf of Mexico Science

Surveys conducted in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, located in the Northern Gulf of Mexico, have documented a 96% decline in waterfowl populations from over 100,000 birds in 1939 to around 4,000 birds in 1999. Coincident with this decline has been the introduction and spread of nonnative Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum). Six surveys have documented the replacement of native wild celery (Vallisneria americana), the perceived preferred food for waterfowl, by M. spicatum as the dominant species of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) in this setting. Simple comparisons of SAV coverage and waterfowl surveys indicate that declines in waterfowl populations …

Economic Sustainability Of The Flambeau Mine Ladysmith, Wisconsin, Anne M. Hartingh Jan 2006

Economic Sustainability Of The Flambeau Mine Ladysmith, Wisconsin, Anne M. Hartingh

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Today sustainable development is a very pertinent issue. Communities do not want companies, specifically mining companies, to deplete a natural resource and leave. The goal is to minimize the negative impacts of mining and the boom/bust cycles of natural resource extraction.

In this study a three part framework was developed to analyze the sustainability of the Flambeau Mine in Ladysmith, Wisconsin. The first and second part dealt with an in-depth local and regional analysis and whether the community was developing within its own vision. The third part used nine sustainability measures including:

1. Need Present Generation

2. Future Need

3. …

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications

This review summarizes peer-reviewed literature related to analysis, occurrence, and fate of emerging chemical contaminants in the water environment. The review focuses on the following broad categories of emerging contaminants: pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs); endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs), including hormones, surfactants, and plasticizers; and brominated flame retardants (BFRs). Although many of the cited articles refer to multiple types of contaminants (particularly hormones and pharmaceuticals), each article is summarized in only one section. Articles pertaining to specific treatment methods, risk assessments, or biological effects are not included in this review, and articles covering disinfection byproducts (DBPs), fluorinated compounds, and …

Migration Dynamics For The Ideal Free Distribution, Ross Cressman, Vlastimil Křivan Jan 2006

Migration Dynamics For The Ideal Free Distribution, Ross Cressman, Vlastimil Křivan

Mathematics Faculty Publications

This article verifies that the ideal free distribution (IFD) is evolutionarily stable, provided the payoff in each patch decreases with an increasing number of individuals. General frequency-dependent models of migratory dynamics that differ in the degree of animal omniscience are then developed. These models do not exclude migration at the IFD where balanced dispersal emerges. It is shown that the population distribution converges to the IFD even when animals are nonideal (i.e., they do not know the quality of all patches). In particular, the IFD emerges when animals never migrate from patches with a higher payoff to patches with a …

Questions About Forensic Science: Response, Jonathan Koehler Jan 2006

Questions About Forensic Science: Response, Jonathan Koehler

Faculty Working Papers

THE ESSENTIAL MESSAGE OF OUR REVIEW WAS that forensic individualization/identification science is on course for a "paradigm shift" in which its future will be more scientifically grounded than its past.

Harmon and Budowle take issue with the simple point that traditional forensic science assumes that markings produced by different people and objects are observably different. The notion of uniqueness is widespread in forensic science writing, thinking, and practice. We added the qualifier "discernible" to the uniqueness assumption to indicate that criminalists do not refer to uniqueness in the abstract or as a metaphysical property. They mean that conclusions about object …

Fibrin Gels: A Potential Biomaterial For The Chondrogenesis Of Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells, Melissa Anne Deitzer Jan 2006

Fibrin Gels: A Potential Biomaterial For The Chondrogenesis Of Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells, Melissa Anne Deitzer

Open Access Theses

The purpose of this study was to develop a fibrin gel system capable of serving as a three dimensional scaffold for the chondrogenesis of rabbit bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) and to examine the effect of two fibrinolytic inhibitors, aprotinin and aminohexanoic acid, on this system. Rabbit BM-MSCs were obtained from the tibias and femurs of New Zealand white rabbits. After chondrogenic potential of BM-MSCs was verified by pellet culture, 2 x 106 cells were pelleted and suspended in fibrinogen (80mg/ml) and then mixed with equal parts of thrombin (5 IU/ml). The specimen were then divided into four groups: …

The Genetic Outcomes Of Sex And Recombination In Long-Term Functionally Parthenogenetic Lineages Of Australian Sitobion Aphids, Alex C. C. Wilson, Paul Sunnucks Jan 2006

The Genetic Outcomes Of Sex And Recombination In Long-Term Functionally Parthenogenetic Lineages Of Australian Sitobion Aphids, Alex C. C. Wilson, Paul Sunnucks

Biology Articles and Papers

The typical life cycle of an aphid is cyclical parthenogenesis which involves the alternation of sexual and asexual reproduction. However, aphid life cycles, even within a species, can encompass everything on a continuum from obligate sexuality, through facultative sexuality to obligate asexuality. Loss of the sexual cycle in aphids is frequently associated with the introduction of a new pest and can occur for a number of environmental and genetic reasons. Here we investigate loss of sexual function in Sitobion aphids in Australia. Specifically, we aimed to determine whether an absence of sexual reproduction in Australian Sitobion results from genetic loss …

The Morality Of Killing Human Embryos, Bonnie Steinbock Jan 2006

The Morality Of Killing Human Embryos, Bonnie Steinbock

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

Embryonic stem cell research is morally and politically controversial because the process of deriving the embryonic stem (ES) cells kills embryos. If embryos are, as some would claim, human beings like you and me, then ES cell research is clearly impermissible. If, on the other hand, the blastocysts from which embryonic stem cells are derived are not yet human beings, but rather microscopic balls of undifferentiated cells, as others maintain, then ES cell research is probably morally permissible. Whether the research can be justified depends on such issues as its cost, chance of success, and numbers likely to benefit. But …

Cell And Fibronectin Dynamics During Branching Morphogenesis, Melinda Larsen Jan 2006

Cell And Fibronectin Dynamics During Branching Morphogenesis, Melinda Larsen

Biological Sciences Faculty Scholarship

Branching morphogenesis is a dynamic developmental process shared by many organs, but the mechanisms that reorganize cells during branching morphogenesis are not well understood. We hypothesized that extensive cell rearrangements are involved, and investigated cell migration using two-color confocal time-lapse microscopy to image cell and extracellular-matrix dynamics in developing salivary glands. We labeled submandibular salivary gland (SMG) epithelial cells with green fluorescent protein and matrix with fluorescent fibronectin. Surprisingly, we observed substantial, rapid and relatively random migration of individual epithelial cells during branching morphogenesis. We predicted that cell migration would decrease after formation of acini and, indeed, found that rapid …

Optimization Of Long Range Electron Transfer For Solar Energy, Randall H. Goldsmith Jan 2006

Optimization Of Long Range Electron Transfer For Solar Energy, Randall H. Goldsmith

Link Foundation Energy Fellowship Reports

Organic photovoltaics have the potential to become an accessible form of alternative energy production because of their ease of manufacture via traditional printing techniques and consequent low cost.1 However, the simplicity of device manufacture belies the complex cascade of processes that allow light to be efficiently converted into electrical power.2 Electron transfer (ET) events constitute the most critical steps. ET is known to be governed by a complex function of many system-specific variables including distance, orientation, and energetics of the donor and acceptor species.3
