The Effects Of Sexual Orientation On Earnings, Tsz-Ying Yeung Jan 2006

The Effects Of Sexual Orientation On Earnings, Tsz-Ying Yeung

Gettysburg Economic Review

Gay and lesbian topics have received much media attention in recent years. Debates have revolved around issues such as gay marriage, adoption rights, and the legal relationship of children born to a homosexual couple with their nonbiological second parent. Corporations have started to provide partner benefits to gay and lesbian employees. Many companies today have added the words “sexual orientation” to their equal rights hiring policies. Nevertheless, discrimination against homosexual people in the workplace is still widely perceived to exist.

In this paper, I address the question, does earnings discrimination against homosexual and bisexual workers exist in the U.S. labor …

A Watershed Analysis Of Long Pong North: Implications For Water Quality And Land-Use Management, Colby Environmental Assessment Team, Colby College, Problems In Environmental Science Course (Biology 493), Colby College

Colby College Watershed Study: Long Pond, North (2006, 1994)

The Colby Environmental Assessment Team (CEAT) investigated the water quality of Long Pond North, located in the Belgrade Lakes region of Maine, from June through December 006. CEAT analyzed several physical, chemical, and biological water quality parameters to determine the current health of the lake. Attributes of the watershed such as land-use patterns and residential and commercial development were also studied to determine their impact on water quality. Data collected were used to produce models of the watershed that enabled CEAT to identify possible sources of degradation to the current and future water quality of Long Pond. To examine historic …

It was shown that the lack of fungitoxicity of some classes of square planar compounds can be altered by adding substituents that make the potential toxicant non-planar and/or dipolar. Corrections were made of errors in a number of published papers. Calculations were made to approximate the sizes and shapes of the perforations in the fungal wall

Ayurvedic Concept Of Food And Nutrition, Amala Guha Jan 2006

Ayurvedic Concept Of Food And Nutrition, Amala Guha

SoM Articles

Ayurveda places special emphasis on Ahar (diet) and Anna (food) and believes that healthy nutrition nourishes the mind, body and soul. Ayurveda does not discriminate food to be good, or bad, instead it emphasizes various factors that influence food, such as its biological properties, origin, environmental factors, seasons, preparation, freshness, and provides a logical explanation of how to balance food according to one's dosha and physical needs.

When Hybrids Go Wrong. How Hybridization Can Create Invasive Species., Carol Auer, Collin Ahrens

Plant Science Presentations and Proceedings

Gene flow is the movement of genes from one plant population to another. Gene flow is a natural process and a part of plant evolution. There are two ways for gene flow to occur in plants. The first is through sexual reproduction – pollen lands on a flower and a viable seed develops. The second method is through dispersal of seeds and/or vegetative plant parts (e.g. stolons, rhizomes). Gene flow can produce hybrid offspring with an increased or decreased ability to survive in the landscape. If hybrid offspring have some advantage in the environment, they could become invasive. This poster …

Climate Change And Its Effects On Polar Bears, Alex C. Jospe, Bethany C. Peck, Emily Sinnott

Undergraduate Research Symposium (UGRS)

Polar bears are key indicators of the effects of climate change on the arctic ecosystem, because their existence is directly related to the sea ice habitat, where they hunt. As the Arctic continues to warm, their habitat will be reduced further and local extinction is likely to occur, especially in southern populations.

Epichlorohydrin Cross-Linking Of Synthetic Dna Oligomers, Rami W. Zaharan, Julie T. Millard Jan 2006

Epichlorohydrin Cross-Linking Of Synthetic Dna Oligomers, Rami W. Zaharan, Julie T. Millard

Undergraduate Research Symposium (UGRS)

Epichlorohydrin (ECH), an important chemical in the synthetic polymer industry, is a bifunctional alkylating agent with the potential to form DNA interstrand crosslinks. Occupational exposure to this suspect carcinogen leads to chromosomal aberrations, and ECH has been shown to undergo reaction with DNA in vivo and in vitro. We are using denaturing polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis to assess cross-linking of synthetic DNA oligomers by both ECH and the related compound, epibromohydrin (EBH). Both epihalohydrins produce a low-mobility band on denaturing gels consistent with an interstrand cross-link. Moreover, the efficiencies, sequence preferences, reaction kinetics, and pH dependence differ for the two compounds, …
