Agreeing To Disagree: Cultural Relativism And The Difficulty Of Defining Terrorism In A Post-9/11 World, Sami Zeidan Jan 2006

Agreeing To Disagree: Cultural Relativism And The Difficulty Of Defining Terrorism In A Post-9/11 World, Sami Zeidan

UC Law SF International Law Review

Paradoxically, in a post-9/11 world where there is an unprecedented international joint response to counter-terrorism, there is still no universal, permanent and comprehensive definition of terrorism. This essay exposes the legal and political issues arising from the tension created between the universal agreement to coordinate counter-terrorism efforts on the one hand, and the proliferation of culturally relativistic definitions of terrorism on the other.

Farmers In The Ip Wrench - How Patents On Gene-Modified Crops Violate The Right To Food In Developing Countries, Peter Straub Jan 2006

Farmers In The Ip Wrench - How Patents On Gene-Modified Crops Violate The Right To Food In Developing Countries, Peter Straub

UC Law SF International Law Review

Patented gene-modified crop seeds have a growing impact on how farming is done in the countries where they are sold and used. Modem patent regimes make all plants and plant material containing modified gene-material subject to the intellectual property rights of transnational corporations. Farmers are then faced with the choice of either entering into licensing agreements, or becoming patent infringers-with all the legal consequences-by marketing the fruits of their labor. This article examines how socioeconomic rights-especially the right to food as defined by Article 11.2 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR)-of small-hold subsistence farmers in …

Queer Refuge: A Review Of The Role Of Country Condition Analysis In Asylum Adjudications For Members Of Sexual Minorities, Arwen Swink

UC Law SF International Law Review

More than 80 countries around the world have laws criminalizing sexual activity between consenting adults of the same sex. Physical and sexual abuse, harassment, detention, and extortion by police are common means of enforcing these laws. For many LGBT people who have been subjected to or who rightly fear persecution, political asylum may offer hope of protection, but the asylum process is not without its pitfalls. This article seeks to explore some of the difficulties the asylum adjudication process may pose for LGBT people seeking refuge from persecution. Specifically, this article addresses the various ways in which asylum adjudicators in …

Chlorella Viruses, Takashi Yamada, Hideki Onimatsu, James L. Van Etten Jan 2006

Chlorella Viruses, Takashi Yamada, Hideki Onimatsu, James L. Van Etten

James Van Etten Publications

Chlorella viruses or chloroviruses are large, icosahedral, plaque‐forming, double‐stranded‐DNA— containing viruses that replicate in certain strains of the unicellular green alga Chlorella. DNA sequence analysis of the 330‐kbp genome of Paramecium bursaria chlorella virus 1 (PBCV‐1), the prototype of this virus family (Phycodnaviridae), predict ∼366 protein‐encoding genes and 11 tRNA genes. The predicted gene products of ∼50% of these genes resemble proteins of known function, including many that are completely unexpected for a virus. In addition, the chlorella viruses have several features and encode many gene products that distinguish them from most viruses. These products include: (1) multiple …

Simulated Performances Of A Heat Pump System For Energy And Water Conservation In Open And Confined Greenhouse Systems, Ilhami Yildiz, D. P. Stombaugh Jan 2006

Simulated Performances Of A Heat Pump System For Energy And Water Conservation In Open And Confined Greenhouse Systems, Ilhami Yildiz, D. P. Stombaugh

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

The purpose of this study was to determine and compare the performances of conventional and heat pump systems for energy and water conservation in open and confined greenhouse systems. Conventional gas furnaces and evaporative cooling, respectively, provided heating and cooling in the conventional system. In the heat pump systems, gas-fired heat pump units provided both heating and cooling. The greenhouse with heat pump units also had an option to be operated as a completely confined system, using one of the heat pump units as a dehumidifier. Average energy consumption in winter was 56.9, 23.5, and 11.3 MJ/day.m² in the conventional, …

Planning For Water Quality: Implementation Of The Npdes Phase Ii Stormwater Program In California And Kansas, Stacey Swearingen White, Michael R. Boswell Jan 2006

Planning For Water Quality: Implementation Of The Npdes Phase Ii Stormwater Program In California And Kansas, Stacey Swearingen White, Michael R. Boswell

City and Regional Planning

In the United States, the federal government is increasingly relying on local governments to implement policies that address the nation's lingering environmental problems. Yet, little is known about the factors that influence local level implementation of a federal mandate. This paper explores local government response to the NPDES Phase II Stormwater Program in California and Kansas by investigating local conditions, perceptions of the federal program, and implementer characteristics. The study found that fiscal resources, a well-educated public, positive perceptions of' the federal policy, and co-operative planning efforts lead to better compliance with the mandate and a higher quality response.

Orientational Correlations In Liquid Acetone And Dimethyl Sulfoxide: A Comparative Study, Sylvia E. Mclain, Alan K. Soper, Alenka Luzar Jan 2006

Orientational Correlations In Liquid Acetone And Dimethyl Sulfoxide: A Comparative Study, Sylvia E. Mclain, Alan K. Soper, Alenka Luzar

Chemistry Publications

The structure of acetone and dimethyl sulfoxide in the liquid state is investigated using a combination of neutron diffractionmeasurements and empirical potential structure refinement (EPSR) modeling. By extracting the orientational correlations from the EPSR model, the alignment of dipoles in both fluids is identified. At short distances the dipoles or neighboring molecules are found to be in antiparallel configurations, but further out the molecules tend to be aligned predominately as head to tail in the manner of dipolar ordering. The distribution of these orientations in space around a central molecule is strongly influenced by the underlying symmetry of the central …

Antifungal Activities Of Ethanol And Aqueous Crude Extracts Of Four Nigerian Chewing Sticks, A. A. Adekunle, K. A. Odukoya Jan 2006

Antifungal Activities Of Ethanol And Aqueous Crude Extracts Of Four Nigerian Chewing Sticks, A. A. Adekunle, K. A. Odukoya

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

The antifungal activities of the ethanol and aqueous crude extracts of four Nigerian chewing sticks were investigated. Also a preliminary phytochemical analysis of the plants was done. The chewing sticks include Anogeissus schimperi, Distemonanthus benthmianus, Vernonia amagdalina and Xanthoxylum zanthoxyloides. All the plants tested, except Anogeissus Schimperi, displayed antifungal activities, zone of inhibition above the 10 mm standard mark. The ethanol crude extracts of the chewing sticks had a greater zone of inhibition in comparison with the aqueous extract. Among the individual plant extracts, D. benthmianus had the highest antifungal activity against Candida albicans, Aspergillus flavus and Microsporium …
