Modeling Blackbird Abundance In The Prairie Pothole Region Using A Hierarchical Spatial Model, George M. Forcey, George M. Linz, Wayne E. Thogmartin, William J. Bleier
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Blackbirds are ubiquitous members of the avian fauna in the Prairie Pothole Region. However, their abundance combined with their food habits make blackbirds significant agricultural pests on sunflower. Cost estimates for blackbird damage to sunflower in the northern Great Plains range from 4-11 million U.S. dollars per year. Because of their economic impact on agriculture, it is imperative to understand the environmental factors that influence blackbird abundance patterns. This study attempts to quantify the effects of landscape-level land use and climate patterns on blackbird abundance in the Prairie Pothole Region of the United States.

Genetic Databases And Biobanks: Who Controls Our Genetic Privacy?, Yael Bregman-Eschet
Genetic Databases And Biobanks: Who Controls Our Genetic Privacy?, Yael Bregman-Eschet
ExpressO
In the past several years a growing number of private biotech companies have been collecting and storing our genetic information and bodily tissues and linking it to life-long medical histories. Many of these commercial companies have close relationships with the public sector: they rely on public institutions to get access to certain medical data and tissue samples, while the public sector relies on those companies for commercial exploitation of the research. Despite the unique nature of the information collected and the sensitivity of genetic databases, these private bio-libraries are largely unregulated in the United States. This article examines who has …

Changes In Dna Bending And Flexing Due To Tethered Cations Detected By Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer, Sarah L. Williams, Laura K. Parkhurst, Lawrence J. Parkhurst
Lawrence Parkhurst Publications
Local DNA deformation arises from an interplay among sequence-related base stacking, intrastrand phosphate repulsion, and counterion and water distribution, which is further complicated by the approach and binding of a protein. The role of electrostatics in this complex chemistry was investigated using tethered cationic groups that mimic proximate side chains. A DNA duplex was modified with one or two centrally located deoxyuracils substituted at the 5-position with either a flexible 3-aminopropyl group or a rigid 3-aminopropyn-1-yl group. End-to-end helical distances and duplex flexibility were obtained from measurements of the time-resolved Fö̈rster resonance energy transfer between 5’- and 3’-linked dye pairs. …

Fumonisins are a group of polyketide-derived mycotoxins produced by Fusarium Verticillioides, a filamentous fungus infecting corn and contaminating food and feeds. Fumonisins contain two tricarballylic esters that are critical for toxicity. Here, we present genetic and biochemical data for the esterification mechanism. FUM14 in F. Verticillioides has been deleted by homologous recombination, and the resultant mutant lost the ability to produce fumonisins. Two new metabolites, HFB3 and HFB4, which are biosynthetic precursors of fumonisins lacking the tricarballylic esters, were detected in the mutant. The results suggest that FUM14 is required for the esterification of fumonisins. FUM14 …

Report Of Sampling And Analytical Activities: Groundwater From The Vicinity Of The Industrial Excess Landfill, Uniontown, Ohio, Concerned Citizens Of Lake Township, Michael E. Ketterer Ph.D., Mark Baskaran
Concerned Citizens of Lake Township (CCLT)
Groundwater samples were collected in two sampling trips, on July 15, 2005 and October 20, 2005. All samples were collected personally by the investigators (Michael E. Ketterer and Mark M. Baskaran), working in the capacity of paid environmental consultants on behalf of the Concerned Citizens of lake Township (CCLT). Water samples were obtained from existing domestic/residential wells, irrigation wells, and one pre-established monitoring well, all of which were located on private property accessed with explicit permission given to CCLT. Samples from irrigation and monitoring wells (DK, GZ, NB, and MW-25s) were collected using a submersible 12V battery powered pump, equipped …

Transition From Unilamellar To Bilameller Vesicles Induced By An Amphiphilic Biopolymer, Jae-Ho Lee, Vivek Argarwal, Arijit Bose, Gregory F. Payne, Srinivasa R. Raghavan

We report some unusual structural transitions upon the addition of an amphiphilic biopolymer to unilamellar surfactant vesicles. The polymer is a hydrophobically modified chitosan and it embeds its hydrophobes in vesicle bilayers. We study vesicle-polymer mixtures using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and cryotransmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM). When low amounts of the polymer are added to unilamellar vesicles of ca. 120 nm diameter, the vesicle size decreases by about 50%. Upon further addition of polymer, lamellar peaks are observed in the SANS spectra at high scattering vectors. We show that these spectra correspond to a co-existence of unilamellar and bilamellar vesicles. …

The hypoxia-inducible form of 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6- bisphosphatase (PFKFB3) plays a crucial role in the progression of cancerous cells by enabling their glycolytic pathways even under severe hypoxic conditions. To understand its structural architecture and to provide a molecular scaffold for the design of new cancer therapeutics, the crystal structure of the human form was determined. The structure at 2.1 Å resolution shows that the overall folding and functional dimerization are very similar to those of the liver (PFKFB1) and testis (PFKFB4) forms, as expected from sequence homology. However, in this structure, the N-terminal regulatory domain is revealed for the first time …
