A Pdz-Binding Motif As A Critical Determinant Of Rho Guanine Exchange Factor Function And Cell Phenotype, Miaoliang Liu, Arie Horowitz Feb 2006

A Pdz-Binding Motif As A Critical Determinant Of Rho Guanine Exchange Factor Function And Cell Phenotype, Miaoliang Liu, Arie Horowitz

Dartmouth Scholarship

We identified a Rho guanine exchange factor (GEF) expressed as two splice variants, which differ only in either having or lacking a Postsynaptic density 95, Disk large, Zona occludens-1 (PDZ) motif. The PDZ adaptor protein synectin bound the longer splice variant, Syx1, which was targeted to the plasma membrane in a synectin-dependent manner. The shorter variant, Syx2, was diffusely distributed in the cytoplasm. Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) imaging revealed similar differences between the spatial patterns of active RhoA in Syx1 versus Syx2-expressing cells. Expression of Syx1 augmented endothelial cell (EC) migration and tube formation, whereas Syx2 expression did not. …

Perennial Crops For Bio-Fuels And Conservation, Gregory Ruark, Scott J. Josiah, Don Riemenschneider, Timothy Volk Feb 2006

Perennial Crops For Bio-Fuels And Conservation, Gregory Ruark, Scott J. Josiah, Don Riemenschneider, Timothy Volk

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Perennial woody crops have the potential to contribute significantly to the production of bio-fuels while simultaneously helping to provide a wide range of conservation benefits. Among these benefits are increased biological diversity in the landscape, conservation of soil and water resources, maintenance of forest ecosystem productivity and health, contribution to the global carbon cycle, and provision of socioeconomic benefits. Short rotation woody crops, like hybrid poplar and willow, grow rapidly and can reach 15-25 feet in height after only three years. Currently, non-irrigated yields can be sustained at about 5 dry tons/acre/year and are increasing as plant breeding, nutrient management, …

Barriers To Innovation: Intellectual Property Transaction Costs In Scientific Collaboration, Megan Ristau Baca Feb 2006

Barriers To Innovation: Intellectual Property Transaction Costs In Scientific Collaboration, Megan Ristau Baca

Duke Law & Technology Review

The institution of university science research has evolved over the past century, from one of open science and free information to one of competition and jealously guarded intellectual property rights. This iBrief analyzes the background factors driving the evolution of the institution of science, evaluates the net effects on the progress of science, and considers potential short-term solutions to alleviate the legal transaction costs necessary for scientific collaboration.

Utilization Of Robotics In Higher Education, John Drew, Michael Esposito, Dr. Christine Perakslis Feb 2006

Utilization Of Robotics In Higher Education, John Drew, Michael Esposito, Dr. Christine Perakslis

Technology

The use of technology in the classroom has evolved from the most primitive to the widespread use of personal computers. One of the trends in technological advancements to enter the classroom is the use of robotics. The relationship between robotics and education spans many years. This paper details Papert’s Constructionism theory defining learning as being more effective when students are “constructing” or “doing” activities that are personally meaningful. Research includes assessment of experiences of this method of teaching Information Technology through robotics at such institutions as West Point, Reykjavik University and University of South Florida. Based on the experiences reported …
