Terrorism And College Students: A Generation's Response To September 11, 2001, Robert Mason Wild Feb 2006

Terrorism And College Students: A Generation's Response To September 11, 2001, Robert Mason Wild

Dissertations

The terrorist attacks on the United States of September 11, 2001 marked a significant cultural turning point for Americans. The tragic destruction of the World Trade Towers , the damage to the Pentagon and the loss of thousands of civilian lives brought an end to the optimism and feelings of security and invulnerability that marked the decade of the 1990s. Students who were enrolled in college at the time of the attacks were affected as well. This qualitative study examines the emotions and attitudes of 50 students enrolled a mid-sized, private research institution on September 11, 2001. The study explores …

Characterization, Functionalization And Applications Of Alkyl Monolayers On Silicon Surfaces, Guilin Jiang Feb 2006

Characterization, Functionalization And Applications Of Alkyl Monolayers On Silicon Surfaces, Guilin Jiang

Theses and Dissertations

Investigations were performed on the stability, mechanism of formation and an application of alkyl monolayers chemomechanically prepared on silicon surfaces. A new method of surface modification, laser-activation modification of surfaces (LAMS), and multivariate analyses of time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) images of LAMS spots were also reported. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and other data show that alkyl monolayers prepared by scribing silicon under 1-iodoalkanes and 1-alkenes were stable over extended periods of time to air, water, a boiling acid and Al Ka X-rays. The stability is attributed to direct Si-C bonding in the monolayers. The observation that the oxygen …

Ophthalmology and Visual Science Faculty Publications

VEGF-A promotes angiogenesis in many tissues. Here we report that choroidal neovascularization (CNV) incited by injury was increased by excess VEGF-A before injury but was suppressed by VEGF-A after injury. This unorthodox antiangiogenic effect was mediated via VEGFR-1 activation and VEGFR-2 deactivation, the latter via Src homology domain 2-containing (SH2-containing) tyrosine phosphatase-1 (SHP-1). The VEGFR-1-specific ligand placental growth factor-1 (PlGF-1), but not VEGF-E, which selectively binds VEGFR-2, mimicked these responses. Excess VEGF-A increased CNV before injury because VEGFR-1 activation was silenced by secreted protein, acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC). The transient decline of SPARC after injury revealed a temporal …

Wto’S Identity Crisis (Reviewing Joost Pauwelyn, Conflict Of Norms In Public International Law: How Wto Law Relates To Other Rules Of International Law (2003)), Sungjoon Cho

All Faculty Scholarship

Joost Pauwelyn has written an extensive and thought-provoking treatise on the interaction of norms in public international law (PIL), in particular between norms of World Trade Organization (WTO) and non-WTO norms, through a conceptual lens of “conflict.” His main argument is non-WTO norms should be able to “trump” WTO norms under certain circumstances. After framing the concept of norm conflict in PIL (Chapter 1), and defining the nature of WTO law (“reciprocal” obligations) vis-à-vis that of other branches of PIL such as human rights and international environmental law (“integral” obligations) (Chapter 2), the book unfolds its conflict thesis, including hierarchy …

Template-Free Synthesis Of Conducting-Polymer Polypyrrole Micro/Nanostructures Using Electrochemistry, S. Gupta Feb 2006

Template-Free Synthesis Of Conducting-Polymer Polypyrrole Micro/Nanostructures Using Electrochemistry, S. Gupta

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

Controlled synthesis of conducting-polymer polypyrrole microcontainers by electrogenerated H2 gas bubbles act as template from a surfactant cum electrolyte (2-naphthalene sulfonic acid; Β -NSA) on a stainless steel working electrode, followed by the electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole around the micelles is reported. The films consist of round grains and cup/bowl-like structures, which became lantern-like with increasing cycles. Sodium chlorate (NaClO3) was used as a reference electrolyte. The bowl diameter and room temperature conductivity ranged 50-2000 nm and 1-50 S cm-1, respectively. An analysis of these films was complemented with Raman spectroscopy to identify the oxidized PPy, polaron, and bipolarons.

Activation Of Mitochondrial Atp-Sensitive Potassium Channels Improves Rotenone-Related Motor And Neurochemical Alterations In Rats, Yong Yang, Xing Liu, Yan Long, Fang Wang, Jian Hua Ding, Su Yi Liu, Ye Hong Sun, Hong Hong Yao, Hai Wang, Jie Wu, Gang Hu Feb 2006

Activation Of Mitochondrial Atp-Sensitive Potassium Channels Improves Rotenone-Related Motor And Neurochemical Alterations In Rats, Yong Yang, Xing Liu, Yan Long, Fang Wang, Jian Hua Ding, Su Yi Liu, Ye Hong Sun, Hong Hong Yao, Hai Wang, Jie Wu, Gang Hu

Translational Neuroscience

Our previous studies revealed that activation of mitochondrial ATP-sensitive potassium channels exerted protective effects on rotenone-treated rats and cultured cells. The aim of the present study is to examine the potential therapeutic effects of iptakalim, an ATP-sensitive potassium-channel opener, and diazoxide, a selective mitochondrial ATP-sensitive potassium-channel opener, on Parkinsonian symptoms in rats induced by rotenone. Rats were treated with rotenone (2.5 mg/kg s.c.) daily for 4 wk. This treatment caused a depletion of dopamine in the striatum and substantia nigra. Behaviourally, rotenone-infused rats exhibit Parkinsonian symptoms. Catalepsy was estimated by a 9-cm bar test. Treatment with L-dopa (10 mg/kg.d p.o.), …

Nonparametric Pathway-Based Regression Models For Analysis Of Genomic Data, Zhi Wei, Hongzhe Li Feb 2006

Nonparametric Pathway-Based Regression Models For Analysis Of Genomic Data, Zhi Wei, Hongzhe Li

UPenn Biostatistics Working Papers

High-throughout genomic data provide an opportunity for identifying pathways and genes that are related to various clinical phenotypes. Besides these genomic data, another valuable source of data is the biological knowledge about genes and pathways that might be related to the phenotypes of many complex diseases. Databases of such knowledge are often called the metadata. In microarray data analysis, such metadata are currently explored in post hoc ways by gene set enrichment analysis but have hardly been utilized in the modeling step. We propose to develop and evaluate a pathway-based gradient descent boosting procedure for nonparametric pathways-based regression(NPR) analysis to …

Bringing Up Baby: Adoption, Marriage, And The Best Interests Of The Child, Robin Fretwell Wilson, W. Bradford Wilcox Feb 2006

Bringing Up Baby: Adoption, Marriage, And The Best Interests Of The Child, Robin Fretwell Wilson, W. Bradford Wilcox

Faculty Scholarship

In the piece, Professor Brad Wilcox and I ask who should care for children when their biological parents cannot? This is a question of potentially explosive dimensions under new definitions of legal parentage proposed in this volume of the WILLIAM & MARY BILL OF RIGHTS JOURNAL. This question is also important today for evaluating state adoption laws. A significant number of states bar consideration of a prospective adopter’s marital or non-marital status. We believe these laws miss an important opportunity to maximize the best interests of each child being placed. In this piece, we take an exclusively child-centered approach, drawing …

D-Mekk1, The Drosophila Orthologue Of Mammalian Mekk4/Mtk1, And Hemipterous/D-Mkk7 Mediate The Activation Of D-Jnk By Cadmium And Arsenite In Schneider Cells, Olga P. Ryabinina, Ezhilkani Subbian, Mihail S. Iordanov

CUP Faculty Research

Background: The family of c-Jun NH2-terminal kinases (JNK) plays important roles in embryonic development and in cellular responses to stress. Toxic metals and their compounds are potent activators of JNK in mammalian cells. The mechanism of mammalian JNK activation by cadmium and sodium arsenite involves toxicant-induced oxidative stress. The study of mammalian signaling pathways to JNK is complicated by the significant degree of redundancy among upstream JNK regulators, especially at the level of JNK kinase kinases (JNKKK).

Results: Using Drosophila melanogaster S2 cells, we demonstrate here that cadmium and arsenite activate Drosophila JNK (D-JNK) via oxidative stress as …
