An Exploration Of The Effects Of Genetic Drift On The Endangered Red-Cockaded Woodpecker, Ryan E. Nelson Mar 2006

An Exploration Of The Effects Of Genetic Drift On The Endangered Red-Cockaded Woodpecker, Ryan E. Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

The Red-cockaded Woodpecker (RCW) (Picoides borealis) is classified as an endangered species under the Endangered Species Act of 1973 due to habitat fragmentation and prescribed burn suppression. Given the endangerment of the RCW, the genetic variation of the small populations will decrease over time due to random genetic drift. The only method of battling the negative effects of random genetic drift is to move, or translocate, genetically diverse birds into the fragmented populations thereby increasing the genetic diversity of the small populations. The objective of this research effort was to explore the effects of random genetic drift on small RCW …

Regulation Of Cytosolic Phospholipase A2 Activation And Cyclooxygenase 2 Expression In Macrophages By The Β-Glucan Receptor, Saritha Suram, Gordon D. Brown, Moumita Ghosh, Siamon Gordon, Robyn Loper, Philip R. Taylor, Shizuo Akira, Satoshi Uematsu, David L. Williams, Christina C. Leslie Mar 2006

Regulation Of Cytosolic Phospholipase A2 Activation And Cyclooxygenase 2 Expression In Macrophages By The Β-Glucan Receptor, Saritha Suram, Gordon D. Brown, Moumita Ghosh, Siamon Gordon, Robyn Loper, Philip R. Taylor, Shizuo Akira, Satoshi Uematsu, David L. Williams, Christina C. Leslie

ETSU Faculty Works

Phagocytosis of non-opsonized microorganisms bymacrophages initiates innate immune responses for host defense against infection. Cytosolic phospholipase A2 is activated during phagocytosis, releasing arachidonic acid for production of eicosanoids, which initiate acute inflammation. Our objective was to identify pattern recognition receptors that stimulate arachidonic acid release and cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2) expression in macrophages by pathogenic yeast and yeast cell walls. Zymosan- and Candida albicans-stimulated arachidonic acid release from resident mouse peritoneal macrophages was blocked by soluble glucan phosphate. In RAW264.7 cells arachidonic acid release, COX2 expression, and prostaglandin production were enhanced by overexpressing the β-glucan receptor, dectin-1, but not dectin-1 lacking …

A Quantitative Analysis Of Secondary Rna Structure Using Domination Based Parameters On Trees, Teresa Haynes, Debra Knisley, Edith Seier, Yue Zou Mar 2006

A Quantitative Analysis Of Secondary Rna Structure Using Domination Based Parameters On Trees, Teresa Haynes, Debra Knisley, Edith Seier, Yue Zou

ETSU Faculty Works

Background: It has become increasingly apparent that a comprehensive database of RNA motifs is essential in order to achieve new goals in genomic and proteomic research. Secondary RNA structures have frequently been represented by various modeling methods as graph-theoretic trees. Using graph theory as a modeling tool allows the vast resources of graphical invariants to be utilized to numerically identify secondary RNA motifs. The domination number of a graph is a graphical invariant that is sensitive to even a slight change in the structure of a tree. The invariants selected in this study are variations of the domination number of …

Efficacy Of Sunflower Decoy Plots For Blackbird Control And Supplemental Stopover Habitat, Heath M. Hagy, John Raetzman, George M. Linz, William J. Bleier Mar 2006

Efficacy Of Sunflower Decoy Plots For Blackbird Control And Supplemental Stopover Habitat, Heath M. Hagy, John Raetzman, George M. Linz, William J. Bleier

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Wildlife Conservation Sunflower Plots (WCSP) were planted and monitored during a two-year trial/research program to monitor the effect of decoy plots on blackbird use of nearby commercial sunflower and abundance of non-blackbird migratory species within the plots. In the two year evaluation period, in excess of 975 hours were spent by three researchers in the plots monitoring damage, vegetation, and avian use. We used bird numbers, vegetation characteristics, and landuse landscape variables to assess the optimal habitat conditions in and around each decoy plot for luring blackbirds and providing adequate stopover habitat for non-blackbird migrants. In 2004, wetland and shelterbelt …

2^K Factorials In Blocks Of Size 2, With Application To Two-Color Microarray Experiments, Kathleen F. Kerr Mar 2006

2^K Factorials In Blocks Of Size 2, With Application To Two-Color Microarray Experiments, Kathleen F. Kerr

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

When a two-level design must be run in blocks of size two, there is a unique blocking scheme that enables estimation of all the main effects. Unfortunately this design does not enable estimation of any two-factor interactions. When the experimental goal is to estimate all main effects and two-factor interactions, it is necessary to combine replicates of the experiment that use different blocking schemes. In this paper we identify such designs for up to eight factors that enable estimation of all main effects and two-factor interactions with the fewest number of replications. In addition, we give a construction for general …
