Network Science And Law: A Sales Pitch And An Application To The "Patent Explosion", Katherine J. Strandburg

ExpressO

The network may be the technological metaphor of the present era. A network, consisting of “nodes” and “links,” may be a group of individuals linked by friendship; a group of computers linked by network cables; a system of roads or airline flights -- or another of a virtually limitless variety of systems of connected “things.” The past few years have seen an explosion of interest in “network science” in fields from physics to sociology. Network science highlights the role of relationship patterns in determining collective behavior. It underscores and begins to address the difficulty of predicting collective behavior from individual …

Biology Articles and Papers

Background

The best studied insect-symbiont system is that of aphids and their primary bacterial endosymbiont Buchnera aphidicola. Buchnera inhabits specialized host cells called bacteriocytes, provides nutrients to the aphid and has co-speciated with its aphid hosts for the past 150 million years. We have used a single microarray to examine gene expression in the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum, and its resident Buchnera. Very little is known of gene expression in aphids, few studies have examined gene expression in Buchnera, and no study has examined simultaneously the expression profiles of a host and its symbiont. Expression profiling …

Globalization, Agency, And Institutional Innovation: The Rise Of Public-Private Partnerships In Global Governance, Liliana B. Andonova Mar 2006

Globalization, Agency, And Institutional Innovation: The Rise Of Public-Private Partnerships In Global Governance, Liliana B. Andonova

Working Papers in Economics

Public and private actors increasingly cooperate in global governance, a realm previously reserved for states and intergovernmental organizations (IOs). This trend raises fascinating theoretical questions. What explains the rise in public-private institutions and their role in international politics? Who leads such institutional innovation and why? To address the questions, this paper develops a theory of the political demand and supply of public-private institutions and specifies the conditions under which IOs and non-state actors would cooperate, and states would support this public-private cooperation. The observable implications of the theoretical argument are evaluated against the broad trends in public-private cooperation and in …

Health Risks Of Ionizing Radiation: An Overview Of Epidemiological Studies, Clark University, Abel Russ, Casey Burns, Seth Tuler, Octavia Taylor

Clark University

A Report by the Community-Based Hazard Management Program, George Perkins Marsh Institute, Clark University.

The health risks of exposure to low levels of ionizing radiation are disputed within the scientific community. Risks associated with exposure to high levels of radiation are widely accepted and well documented based primarily on the studies of the atomic bomb survivors in Nagasaki and Hiroshima. Some feel that the best way to estimate risk for low- level exposures is to extrapolate from higher doses, although there is some clear evidence of low-dose risk. In this overview we have attempted to give an unbiased summary of …

Multiple Tests Of Association With Biological Annotation Metadata, Sandrine Dudoit, Sunduz Keles, Mark J. Van Der Laan Mar 2006

Multiple Tests Of Association With Biological Annotation Metadata, Sandrine Dudoit, Sunduz Keles, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

We propose a general and formal statistical framework for the multiple tests of associations between known fixed features of a genome and unknown parameters of the distribution of variable features of this genome in a population of interest. The known fixed gene-annotation profiles, corresponding to the fixed features of the genome, may concern Gene Ontology (GO) annotation, pathway membership, regulation by particular transcription factors, nucleotide sequences, or protein sequences. The unknown gene-parameter profiles, corresponding to the variable features of the genome, may be, for example, regression coefficients relating genome-wide transcript levels or DNA copy numbers to possibly censored biological and …

Nhep Environmental Indicator Report: Critical Habitats And Species 2006, Phil Trowbridge

PREP Reports & Publications

The New Hampshire Estuaries Project (NHEP) is part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Estuary Program, which is a joint local/state/federal program established under the Clean Water Act with the goal of protecting and enhancing nationally significant estuarine resources. The NHEP is funded by the EPA and is administered by the University of New Hampshire. The NHEP’s Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan for New Hampshire’s estuaries was completed in 2000 and implementation is ongoing. The Management Plan outlines key issues related to management of New Hampshire's estuaries and proposes strategies (Action Plans) that are expected to preserve, protect, and …

Strengthening Church Leadership And Preventing Pastoral Burnout Through Imago Relationship Therapy, Keri Warren Mar 2006

Strengthening Church Leadership And Preventing Pastoral Burnout Through Imago Relationship Therapy, Keri Warren

Doctor of Ministry

Pastors have their own family system and, therefore, bring into the church and ministry their family-of-origin functional and dysfunctional thinking patterns and behaviors. Pastors who receive insight into and healing of early-life woundedness and dysfunctional patterns, especially those patterns that are core to Bowen's family systems theory, will be less likely to compensate for their woundedness through the church family system and less likely then to experience burnout. It is the thesis of this dissertation that pastors engage in Imago Relationship Theory techniques with their spouses, and experience personal healing and self-differentiation leading to further spiritual identity development, become better …

Gender Dimorphism In Tetradium Daniellii (Rutaceae): Floral Biology, Gametogenesis, And Sexual System Evolution, Qingyuan Zhou, Robert I. Bertin, Dezhi Fu Mar 2006

Gender Dimorphism In Tetradium Daniellii (Rutaceae): Floral Biology, Gametogenesis, And Sexual System Evolution, Qingyuan Zhou, Robert I. Bertin, Dezhi Fu

Biology Department Faculty Scholarship

We investigated the sexual system, floral biology, sporogenesis, and gametogenesis of Tetradium daniellii (Bennett) Hartley, which possessed distinct male and monoecious sexual phenotypes. Male individuals produced almost exclusively male flowers. In the years 2000-2002, the protandrous monoecious individuals had male and female flowering phases completely separated in time within and between the plants, while in 2003 and 2004, slight overlap of male and female functions occurred. During early floral development, all flowers were hermaphroditic. Dimorphic unisexual flowers resulted from later selective abortion of the gynoecium or androecium. Male flowers and their pollen in the two sexual morphs did not significantly …

“No One Can Serve Two Masters”: A Separation Of Powers Solution For Conflicts Of Interest Within The Department Of Health And Human Services, Vale Krenik

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

This Comment examines the financial conflicts of interests within the DHHS that results in private influence, the consequential impact of the private influence on the agency's constitutionality under the nondelegation and separation of powers doctrines, and offers a solution that better conforms to the principles and structure of the United States Constitution. Part II examines the penetration of conflicts of interests within the DHHS and impact on drug safety and human lives. Part III discusses the separation of powers doctrine and the development of the nondelegation doctrine with respect to delegations to private groups. Part IV analyzes the constitutionality of …
