Using Agent-Based Modeling To Search For Elusive Hiding Targets, Jeffrey E. Rucker Mar 2006

Using Agent-Based Modeling To Search For Elusive Hiding Targets, Jeffrey E. Rucker

Theses and Dissertations

The SCUD hunt problem that emerged during Operation Desert Storm has become a source of great interest to major commands like Air Combat Command. One of the metrics used to measure the effectiveness of our operations in a SCUD hunt is time to detect and target. We use the agent-based System Effectiveness and Analysis Simulation (SEAS) to provide a simulation environment in which all the elements of a SCUD hunt mission can adequately be modeled. Our Blue Force agents are modeled as multirole fighters, satellites and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) with various sensor capabilities. The Red Force agents are modeled …

Singlet Delta Oxygen: A Quantitative Analysis Using Off-Axis Integrated-Cavity-Output-Spectroscopy (Icos), Jeffrey E. Gallagher Mar 2006

Singlet Delta Oxygen: A Quantitative Analysis Using Off-Axis Integrated-Cavity-Output-Spectroscopy (Icos), Jeffrey E. Gallagher

Theses and Dissertations

A new spectroscopic technique applicable to the detection of ultra-weak and for- bidden molecular transitions is presented. The method is based on off-axis integrated-cavity-output spectroscopy (ICOS). The primary goal for this research effort is to utilize the ICOS technique and demonstrate its ability to provide quantitative data of singlet delta oxygen. This thesis will focus on three areas of characterization to achieve this goal. First, the absolute line positions will be determined and compared to values derived from the most recent theory. Second, the integrated absorption cross-sections will be verified using Boltzmann analysis. Finally, pressure broadening coefficients will be determined …

Localism's Ecology: Protecting And Restoring Habitat In The Suburban Nation, Jamison E. Colburn Mar 2006

Localism's Ecology: Protecting And Restoring Habitat In The Suburban Nation, Jamison E. Colburn

ExpressO

There is wide agreement among conservation activists and scientists alike that loss and alteration of habitat are the leading threats to biodiversity in America. Suburbs and exurbs, though, are only beginning to acknowledge that they are the problem in the struggle to stem the tide of “sprawl” and other economic processes producing ecosystem-wide habitat degradation today. A recent resurgence in academic and activist attention to local governments in America is reconsidering them as viable solutions to this problem. But most of this dialogue is being based upon a mistaken conception of local governance. Much of the legal scholarship on local …

Medium Access Control And Networking Protocols For The Intra-Body Network, Eric Thomas Stucki Mar 2006

Medium Access Control And Networking Protocols For The Intra-Body Network, Eric Thomas Stucki

Theses and Dissertations

Biomedical applications offer an exciting growth opportunity for wireless sensor networks. However, radio frequency communication is problematic in hospital environments that are susceptible to interference in the industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) bands. Also, RF is inherently insecure as eavesdroppers can easily pick up signals. The Intra-Body Network (IBNet) proposes a novel communication model for biomedical sensor networks. It seeks the convenience of wireless communication while avoiding interference and privacy concerns associated with RF. IBNet's solution is to utilize a subject's own body tissue as a transmission medium. Assuming that transmissions are contained within the body, IBNet solves otherwise complex …

Modeling Third Sector Organizations: A Proposal For An Organizational Modeling Language, Roger A. Lohmann Mar 2006

Modeling Third Sector Organizations: A Proposal For An Organizational Modeling Language, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Sector-talk is one of the stable features of discussions of nonprofit organizations today. However, little progress has yet been made in defining or measuring the allegedly different social relations which characterize the sectors. This paper proposes an approach to operational definition of the sectors, grounded in use of chemical modeling software to modify the lowly organization chart. The organizational modeling language proposed here addresses four dimensions: dominance, exchange, intimacy and mutuality.

Choking Bioshield: The Department Of Homeland Security's Stranglehold On Biodefense Vaccine Development, Michael Greenberger Mar 2006

Choking Bioshield: The Department Of Homeland Security's Stranglehold On Biodefense Vaccine Development, Michael Greenberger

Faculty Scholarship

One of the bright milestones toward the development of a vibrant biodefense vaccine industry was the passage of the Project BioShield Act of 2004. That statute was designed "to provide protections and countermeasures against chemical, radiological, or nuclear agents that may be used in a terrorist attack against the United States". It encourages the development of effective countermeasures by establishing the Special Reserve Fund of $5.6 billion to be spent over ten years to assure pharmaceutical and biotechnology manufacturers that there is a ready market for their products through purchases by the government for the Strategic National Stockpile. The Act …

When Hope Lies With The Courage Of A Cowardly Lion: Social Science, Race, And Judicial Political Affiliation In Contemporary Race Conscious Admissions Cases, Crystal R. Gafford Muhammad Mar 2006

When Hope Lies With The Courage Of A Cowardly Lion: Social Science, Race, And Judicial Political Affiliation In Contemporary Race Conscious Admissions Cases, Crystal R. Gafford Muhammad

ExpressO

This paper employs the critical race theoretical frame of the price of racial remedies, using statistical analysis to document the influence of judicial political affiliation in the outcomes of contemporary race conscious admissions cases. The analyses employed support the conclusion that the outcomes of these cases rest on the political affiliations of the judges, confirming the terse Critical Legal Studies (CLS) critique that “its all political”. Going beyond the CLS critique and centering my work in critical race theory, I ground my findings in Derrick Bell’s price of racial remedies framework. What is most interesting here is that in the …
