Reproducibility Of Geochemical And Climatic Signals In The Atlantic Coral Montastraea Faveolata, Jennifer M. Smith, Terrence M. Quinn, Kevin P. Helmle, Robert B. Halley Mar 2006

Reproducibility Of Geochemical And Climatic Signals In The Atlantic Coral Montastraea Faveolata, Jennifer M. Smith, Terrence M. Quinn, Kevin P. Helmle, Robert B. Halley

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Monthly resolved, 41‐year‐long stable isotopic and elemental ratio time series were generated from two separate heads of Montastraea faveolata from Looe Key, Florida, to assess the fidelity of using geochemical variations in Montastraea, the dominant reef‐building coral of the Atlantic, to reconstruct sea surface environmental conditions at this site. The stable isotope time series of the two corals replicate well; mean values of δ18O and δ13C are indistinguishable between cores (compare 0.70‰ versus 0.68‰ for δ13C and −3.90‰ versus −3.94‰ for δ18O). Mean values from the Sr/Ca time series differ by …

Mining The Common Heritage Of Our Dna: Lessons Learned From Grotius And Pardo, Jasper A. Bovenberg Mar 2006

Mining The Common Heritage Of Our Dna: Lessons Learned From Grotius And Pardo, Jasper A. Bovenberg

Duke Law & Technology Review

The Human Genome Project generated oceans of DNA sequence data and spurred a multinational race to grab the bounties of these oceans. In response to these DNA property grabs, UNESCO, drawing upon international law precedents addressing analogous grabs in the past, declared the Human Genome the heritage of humanity. The UNESCO Declaration provided, first, that the heritage shall not, in its natural state, give rise to financial gains and, second, that countries establish an international framework to make the benefits from genome research available to all. This iBrief will first examine Grotius’s Mare Liberum to determine whether international law precedent …

The Water Vapor Permeability Of Polycrystalline Fat Barrier Films, Silvana Martini, D. A. Kim, M. Ollivon, A. G. Marangoni Mar 2006

The Water Vapor Permeability Of Polycrystalline Fat Barrier Films, Silvana Martini, D. A. Kim, M. Ollivon, A. G. Marangoni

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

The water vapor permeability of fat barrier films has been associated with structural characteristics such as polymorphism, crystal size, and chemical composition, among others. However, no mechanistic models have been proposed to describe this relationship. In this study, we have determined the effects of processing conditions on the structure and physicochemical characteristics of four fats and their relationship to water vapor permeability. Results suggest that the solids' volume fraction and the domain size of the fat crystals seem to be the most important factors controlling water vapor migration. Moreover, materials with relatively large crystalline domains will yield malleable films with …

The Expressive Impact Of Patents, Timothy R. Holbrook Mar 2006

The Expressive Impact Of Patents, Timothy R. Holbrook

ExpressO

Patents represent a quid pro quo between the public and the inventor: in exchange for disclosing the invention, the inventor receives the right to exclude others from practicing her invention. They therefore serve as a source technical information. Patents also communicate information to markets and companies that serve to reduce various transaction costs, allowing more efficient transactions and investment. Patents consequently communicate various types of information beyond the technical.

There is no reason, however, that such messages must be limited to the technical or the pecuniary. This Article explores whether patents, like other governmental acts such as legislation, can create …

Clinical Holistic Medicine: Holistic Sexology And Acupressure Through The Vagina (Hippocratic Pelvic Massage), Søren Ventegodt, Birgitte Clausen, Hatim A. Omar, Joav Merrick

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Many gynecological and sexological problems (like urine incontinence, chronic pelvic pains, vulvodynia, and lack of lust, excitement, and orgasm) are resistant to standard medical treatment. In our work at the Research Clinic for Holistic Medicine in Copenhagen, we have found that vaginal acupressure, or Hippocratic pelvic massage, can help some of these problems. Technically, it is a very simple procedure as it corresponds to the explorative phase of the standard pelvic examination, supplemented with the patient's report on the feelings it provokes and the processing and integration of these feelings. Sometimes it can be very difficult to control the emotions …

Macrocyclic Antibiotics As Separation Agents, Daniel W. Armstrong Mar 2006

Macrocyclic Antibiotics As Separation Agents, Daniel W. Armstrong

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Macrocyclic antibiotics having ring structures with at least 10 members act as separation agents in crystallization, precipitation, filtration, electrophoresis, and chromatography. The macrocyclic antibiotics include ansamacrolides, macrolides, macrocyclic peptides, polyenes and derivatives thereof. The process has been found to be especially advantageous for separation of optical isomers by electrophoresis and chromatography.

Universities And Their Connected Communites: Creating Capital For The Future, Nancy Cantor

Chancellor's Collection

President Shirley Ann Jackson, colleagues, ladies and gentlemen, it is a great pleasure to speak at Rensselaer, a sister institution of Syracuse University in proximity and in history, sharing many alumni and pursuing similar educational philosophies. Steven van Rensselaer, who founded RPI, was a driving force behind the Erie Canal and, therefore, deeply connected to the city of Syracuse, which until the construction of the Canal was only a trading post for the local salt mines. In 1820, a visitor described our area as "so desolate it would make an owl weep to fly over it."Once Syracuse could export its …

Prediction Of Flight-Level Radiation Hazards Due To Solar Energetic Protons, Matthew P. Sattler Mar 2006

Prediction Of Flight-Level Radiation Hazards Due To Solar Energetic Protons, Matthew P. Sattler

Theses and Dissertations

The radiation environment at aircraft altitudes is caused primarily by high-energy particles originating from outside the near-earth environment. These particles generally come from outside our solar system and are called galactic cosmic rays. Occasionally however, a transient solar event will also accelerate energetic protons toward the earth. If these protons reach the upper atmosphere, they produce secondary particles via collisions, resulting in increased radiation levels in the atmosphere. Air crews and electronic systems flying at high altitudes during one of these events are subjected to these increased levels of radiation which can result in health problems for personnel and soft …

Terrain And Spatial Effects On Hazard Prediction And Assessment Capability (Hpac) Software Dose-Rate Contour Plot Predictions As Compared To A Sample Of Local Fallout Data From Test Detonations In The Continental United States, 1945-1962, Kevin D. Pace Mar 2006

Pace

Theses and Dissertations

Hazard Prediction and Capability (HPAC) Software is validated by comparing modeled predictions to historical test data. Reanalysis weather data is acquired and reformatted for use in HPAC. Simulations are made using various amounts of weather data by use of a spatial domain. Simulations are also varied by levels of terrain resolution. The predicted output of the software is numerically compared to historical test data. The result of this research culminated in the knowledge that HPAC prediction accuracy is improved by using terrain resolutions beyond the flat earth assumption. Furthermore, this research establishes that domain size variation produces no significant advantage …
