Evidence exists that breast tumors differing by estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) status may be phenotypically distinct diseases resulting from dissimilar etiologic processes. Few studies have attempted to examine the association of physical activity with breast cancer subtype. Such research may prove instructive into the biological mechanisms of activity. Consequently, this investigation was designed to assess the relationship between physical activity and hormone receptor-defined breast cancers in a population of Asian women in which the distribution of receptor types differed from traditional Western populations. Participants, ages 25 to 64 years, were recruited into this population-based, case-control study of …
Molecular Characterization Of Wetland Soil Bacterial Community In Constructed Mesocosms, Ethan C. Bishop
Molecular Characterization Of Wetland Soil Bacterial Community In Constructed Mesocosms, Ethan C. Bishop
Theses and Dissertations
The use of wetlands to effectively remediate aquifers contaminated with chlorinated solvents is an emerging technique, which shows high promise. In order to better understand this process and test its legitimacy, a treatment wetland was constructed at Wright-Patterson AFB, Dayton, Ohio and, in a joint effort with Wright State University (WSU), has previously shown the effective removal of PCE. The purpose of this research was to characterize the soil bacterial community, pre-PCE injection, among three wetland plant species from the sedge family (Cyperaceae) within constructed wetland mesocosms and to identify any bacterial dominance. Carex comosa, Scirpus atrovirens, and Eleocharis erythropoda …
Modeling And Optimization Of Biological Nutrients Removal In Wastewater Treatment Processes Considering Advanced Kinetic Modeling Techniques, Nawras Nabil Ai Ghazaly
Modeling And Optimization Of Biological Nutrients Removal In Wastewater Treatment Processes Considering Advanced Kinetic Modeling Techniques, Nawras Nabil Ai Ghazaly
Theses
In the field of wastewater treatment, there is an increasing demand to improve the effluent
quality especially if it is going to be discharged to surface water. Effluent discharged
to surface water should have minimum nutrients level (nitrogen and phosphorus) in order
to avoid eutrophication and the resulting algal blooms which deplete the water from the oxygen
needed by other plant and animal species. Moreover, there is a demand to reduce the chemical
consumption in the treatment processes and to depend as much as we can on the biological
Treatment methods in achieving the required effluent quality in terms of …
Quantity And Quality Simulation In Al Ain Water Distribution System, Awbath Saleh Salem Al Jaberi
Quantity And Quality Simulation In Al Ain Water Distribution System, Awbath Saleh Salem Al Jaberi
Theses
A hydraulic and chlorine simulation is conducted for three selected areas in Al Ain region. WaterCad 7.0, a water distribution system model, was chosen to conduct the simulation of the hydraulic behavior within the water distribution system. The fate of residual chlorine flowing through these systems over time is tracked by this software. The conducted hydraulic model predicts the performance of Al Yahar, AI Dhaher and Sweihan networks. Skeletonaization approach is employed in setting up the model for each system. In this study, the customer storage tanks (CSTs) are taken into consideration in performing the extended period simulation. Each group …
Exploiting Domain Structure For Named Entity Recognition, Jing Jiang, Chengxiang Zhai
Exploiting Domain Structure For Named Entity Recognition, Jing Jiang, Chengxiang Zhai
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Named Entity Recognition (NER) is a fundamental task in text mining and natural language understanding. Current approaches to NER (mostly based on supervised learning) perform well on domains similar to the training domain, but they tend to adapt poorly to slightly different domains. We present several strategies for exploiting the domain structure in the training data to learn a more robust named entity recognizer that can perform well on a new domain. First, we propose a simple yet effective way to automatically rank features based on their generalizabilities across domains. We then train a classifier with strong emphasis on the …

Sex Differences In Regret: All For Love Or Some For Lust?, Neal J. Roese, Ginger L. Pennington, Jill Coleman, Maria Janicki, Norman P. Li, Douglas T. Kenrick
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Few sex differences in regret or counterfactual thinking are evident in past research. The authors discovered a sex difference in regret that is both domain-specific (i.e., unique to romantic relationships) and interpretable within a convergence of theories of evolution and regulatory focus. Three studies showed that within romantic relationships, men emphasize regrets of inaction over action (which correspond to promotion vs. prevention goals, respectively), whereas women report regrets of inaction and action with equivalent frequency. Sex differences were not evident in other interpersonal regrets (friendship, parental, sibling interactions) and were not moderated by relationship status. Although the sex difference was …
A Bimodular Theory For Finite Deformations: Comparison Of Orthotropic Second-Order And Exponential Stress Constitutive Equations For Articular Cartilage, Stephen M. Klisch
A Bimodular Theory For Finite Deformations: Comparison Of Orthotropic Second-Order And Exponential Stress Constitutive Equations For Articular Cartilage, Stephen M. Klisch
Mechanical Engineering
Cartilaginous tissues, such as articular cartilage and the annulus fibrosus, exhibit orthotropic behavior with highly asymmetric tensile–compressive responses. Due to this complex behavior, it is difficult to develop accurate stress constitutive equations that are valid for finite deformations. Therefore, we have developed a bimodular theory for finite deformations of elastic materials that allows the mechanical properties of the tissue to differ in tension and compression. In this paper, we derive an orthotropic stress constitutive equation that is second-order in terms of the Biot strain tensor as an alternative to traditional exponential type equations. Several reduced forms of the bimodular second-order …
Coexistence Of The Niche And Neutral Perspectives In Community Ecology, Mathew A. Leibold, Mark A. Mcpeek
Coexistence Of The Niche And Neutral Perspectives In Community Ecology, Mathew A. Leibold, Mark A. Mcpeek
Dartmouth Scholarship
The neutral theory for community structure and biodiversity is dependent on the assumption that species are equivalent to each other in all important ecological respects. We explore what this concept of equivalence means in ecological communities, how such species may arise evolutionarily, and how the possibility of ecological equivalents relates to previous ideas about niche differentiation. We also show that the co-occurrence of ecologically similar or equivalent species is not incompatible with niche theory as has been supposed, because niche relations can sometimes favor coexistence of similar species. We argue that both evolutionary and ecological processes operate to promote the …

Medial Prefrontal Dissociations During Processing Of Trait Diagnostic And Nondiagnostic Person Information, Jason P. Mitchell, Jasmin Cloutier, Mahzarin R. Banaji, C Neil Macrae
Dartmouth Scholarship
Previous research has suggested that perceivers spontaneously extract trait-specific information from the behaviour of others. However, little is known about whether perceivers spontaneously engage in the same depth of social-cognitive processing for all person information or reserve such processing specifically for information that conveys diagnostic clues about another person's dispositions. Moreover, a question remains as to whether the processing of such nondiagnostic information can be affected by perceivers’ explicit goal to consider another's dispositions or not. To examine processing of diagnostic and nondiagnostic social information as a function of perceivers’ explicit social-cognitive goals, participants underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) …

Feeding Habitats Of Spring-Migrating Blackbirds In East-Central South Dakota, Richard S. Sawin, George M. Linz, William J. Bleier, H. Jeffrey Homan
The Prairie Naturalist
Between March 27 and April 21, 1998, we monitored blackbird (Icteridae) activity and habitat selection at a migratory staging area in east-central South Dakota. We used fixed-area observation points located within 20 l-km2 circular plots centered on four wetland basins that were used as night roosts. Each roost was surveyed four times, with the surveys spread evenly throughout the blackbird migration. We recorded the number of blackbird flocks, flock size and composition, habitat used, and behavior (e.g., loafing and feeding). Fifty percent (n = 242) of the 482 flocks recorded in the quadrats was observed loafing in trees …

A Compact Blimp Remote Sensing System For Analysis Of Environmental Change, Joann Sullivan
A Compact Blimp Remote Sensing System For Analysis Of Environmental Change, Joann Sullivan
Student Work
The goal of this research is to demonstrate that developing an inexpensive compact blimp remote sensing system will allow for analysis and change detection of environmental characteristics over a small area. This system has scale and temporal advantages over existing aircraft and space platforms. The blimp remote sensing platform is capable of temporal resolutions of hours or days, while generating low cost, high spatial resolution images. This contrasts with satellite and fixed wing aircraft systems that are costly to purchase and operate, have low temporal resolutions, and may not provide adequate spatial resolution to investigate small scale phenomena. As designed, …

Physical Defenses Against Herbivory In Gesneriaceae, June 2006, Meagan Turner
Physical Defenses Against Herbivory In Gesneriaceae, June 2006, Meagan Turner
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
I studied physical plant defenses in seven species within the family Gesneriaceae: Alloplectus tetragonus, Besleria princeps, Besleria solanoides, Besleria triflora, Columnea glabra, Columnea microcalyx, and Monopyle maxonii. The species display varying levels of pubescence and leaf toughness. The purpose here is to determine if these physical traits deter herbivores and decrease the amount of herbivory. Data were collected on plants growing along the Senderos Principal and División behind the Estación Biológica, and the Sendero Nuboso in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, Costa Rica, from April 16 to May 8, 2006. Twenty individuals from each species were sampled and the percent …

Attack Pheromone Response Among Colonies And Castes In The Leaf-Cutting Ant Atta Cephalotes, June 2006, Matthew Ward
Attack Pheromone Response Among Colonies And Castes In The Leaf-Cutting Ant Atta Cephalotes, June 2006, Matthew Ward
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Attack pheromones in Atta cephalotes are important in coordinating defense responses to protect the colony. Little is known about the dynamics of A. cephalotes defenses and their underlying mechanisms (Whitehouse and Jaffe 1996). The objective of this study was to test for differences in response between four colonies and between the three classes of ant; minor, worker, and soldiers. Eight treatments were performed to carry out the two experiments. Toothpicks were coated with the attack pheromone from each of the four colonies and each of the three castes and one toothpick was tested without any pheromone as a control. Using …

Edge Effects On Understory Rubiaceae Communities In Lower Montane Moist Forest At Monteverde, Costa Rica, June 2006, Jenna Halsey
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Understory plants are important to tropical forest structure as they support diverse communities of frugivorous birds, insects, and mammals. The biodiversity in understory communities is becoming increasingly altered as fragmentation of forests exposes more land to edge effects. Rubiaceae is a common understory fruiting plant family that can be found in forest fragments in tropical and subtropical regions. This study examined the effects of distance from a pasture edge on the abundance and species richness of Rubiaceae. I tested a total of ten transects that ran 68 m deep into the forest fragment. Each transect contained four 2x2 m2 plots, …
Diapause Aggregations In Stenotarsus Sp. (Endomychidae), June 2006, Alison Bernhardt
Diapause Aggregations In Stenotarsus Sp. (Endomychidae), June 2006, Alison Bernhardt
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Stenotarsus sp. (Endomychidae, Coleoptera) are handsome fungus beetles, which feed on fungus and rotten wood. The genus Stenotarsus is well known for its formation of large aggregations often composed of several layers, during diapause. Stenotarsus sp. has been shown to form these aggregations for mating purposes, predator avoidance and water conservation. Therefore, given these reasons for aggregating this study predicts that larger individuals will have an advantage at acquiring positions low in the stacks and towards the center where they are less likely to be picked off by predators and will have an advantage in conserving water. This study also …
Analysis Of Abalone (Haliotis Discus Hannai And Haliotis Tuberculata) Shellfish Histology And Pathology Using Microscopic And Molecular Methods, Leanne Harris
Doctoral
The aims of this research project were to study the biology of abalone through a histological characterisation of two species of this shellfish, Haliotis tuberculata and Haliotis discus hannai using both histochemical and immunohistochemical techniques and to develop molecular methods for the detection and quantitation of common shellfish pathogens associated with abalone disease outbreaks. In the first part of this study immunohistochemistry was used to examine cell distribution structural and functional proteins in abalone tissues. Phenotypic antigen expression was analysed in abalone shellfish using an array of antibodies that react with a range of proteins in many different species. In …

The Private Provision Of Public Goods: Terrorism Protection In The Critical Infrastructure Industries, James K. Hayes
Student Scholarship
My research interest is to understand the business plan for industries to invest in security against terrorism, if and why this investment is likely to be less than socially optimal and what government's role is in promoting the appropriate level of investment in security in a free market economy. I believe that an industry's ability to pay for such protection is an important factor but have also relied heavily on the economic literature regarding the theoretical circumstances in which a private actor will willingly contribute to the provision of a public good. Unfortunately, the literature is ambiguous in its prediction …
Literary Emergence As A Case Study Of Theory In Comparative Literature, César Domínguez
Literary Emergence As A Case Study Of Theory In Comparative Literature, César Domínguez
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his paper, "Literary Emergence as a Case Study of Theory in Comparative Literature," César Domínguez constructs an interdisciplinary theoretical model which sheds new light on literary emergence, a phenomenon that defies literary, artistic, and cultural boundaries. Domínguez opens his discussion with a synthesis regarding the state of the question, paying particular attention to the contradictions provoked when an inventory of emerging literatures is attempted and goes on to develop a theoretical framework in which the dynamic processes which define emerging literature are seen relative to world literature. He understands world literature as a mega-system in which emergence finds itself …

In this article we identify factors potentially associated with pesticide exposure among farmworkers, grade the evidence in the peer-reviewed literature for such associations, and propose a minimum set of measures necessary to understand farmworker risk for pesticide exposure. Data sources we reviewed included Medline, Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index, PsycINFO, and AGRICOLA databases. Data extraction was restricted to those articles that reported primary data collection and analysis published in 1990 or later. We read and summarized evidence for pesticide exposure associations. For data synthesis, articles were graded by type of evidence for association of risk factor with pesticide …
