The Effect Of Temperature And Humidity On The Bionomics Of Six African Egg Parasitoids (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), A. Kalyebi, W. A. Overholt, F. Schulthess, J. M. Mueke, S. Sithanantham
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
The life table statistics of six native Kenyan species/strains of Trichogramma and Trichogrammatoidea were established using a factitious host Corcyra cephalonica, Stainton (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), at eight different temperatures (10, 15, 20, 25, 28, 30, 32 and 35°C) and two humidity levels (40-50 and 70-80%). The objective was to select insects with superior attributes for augmentative release against lepidopteran pests in horticultural crops. Both temperature and humidity affected developmental time and life table parameters of the parasitoids but temperature played a more critical role. Developmental time was inversely related to temperature. The intrinsic and finite rates of increase increased with temperature …
Statistical Models Of Reconstructed Phase Spaces For Signal Classification, Richard J. Povinelli, Michael T. Johnson, Andrew C. Lindgren, Felice M. Roberts, Jinjin Ye
Statistical Models Of Reconstructed Phase Spaces For Signal Classification, Richard J. Povinelli, Michael T. Johnson, Andrew C. Lindgren, Felice M. Roberts, Jinjin Ye
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
This paper introduces a novel approach to the analysis and classification of time series signals using statistical models of reconstructed phase spaces. With sufficient dimension, such reconstructed phase spaces are, with probability one, guaranteed to be topologically equivalent to the state dynamics of the generating system, and, therefore, may contain information that is absent in analysis and classification methods rooted in linear assumptions. Parametric and nonparametric distributions are introduced as statistical representations over the multidimensional reconstructed phase space, with classification accomplished through methods such as Bayes maximum likelihood and artificial neural networks (ANNs). The technique is demonstrated on heart arrhythmia …
Effects Of Advancing Age On Er Calcium Regulation In Rat Superior Cervical Ganglia, Conwin Kodel Vanterpool
Effects Of Advancing Age On Er Calcium Regulation In Rat Superior Cervical Ganglia, Conwin Kodel Vanterpool
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Intracellular calcium ([Ca2+]i) release from endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stores plays an important role in cell signaling. These stores are rapidly refilled via voltage-gated calcium channels or spontaneously via store-operated calcium channels and subsequent pumping by ER Ca2+-ATPases. Calcium release is triggered by the activation of the ryanodine receptor (RyR) channels and their function is in part dependent on their expression. We analyzed the [Ca2+]i transients in fura 2-loaded superior cervical ganglion (SCG) cells from 6, 12, 20, and 24-month-old Fischer 344 rats for their ability to rapidly and spontaneously refill. For rapid refilling, the …
The Effect Of Calcium Hydroxide Pastes On Root Dentin Fracture Resistance, Kurt W. Sturz
The Effect Of Calcium Hydroxide Pastes On Root Dentin Fracture Resistance, Kurt W. Sturz
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Calcium hydroxide is a common intracanal medicament used in the treatment of immature teeth that have been subjected to trauma or decay prior to root canal therapy. The effect of calcium hydroxide on immature root dentin is important. One area of concern is the effect that calcium hydroxide has on the fracture resistance of an immature tooth. It is the aim of this study to compare the effect of four different commercially available calcium hydroxide pastes on the fracture resistance of bovine teeth. Seventy-five freshly extracted, intact bovine incisors were prepared according to a modified Haapasalo and Orstavik technique. Each …

Effect Of Different Temperatures And Densities Of Host Larvae On The Parasitism And Biological Performance Of Bracon Hebetor Say, Mahmmod Emad Ahmed, Alla Abdul-Hassan Muhsen, Ayaid A Al-Tawiel
Baghdad Science Journal
Parasitism efficacy and biological performance of Bracon hebetor Say at different temperatures and densities of host larvae were investigated. The results showed that the parasitoid female in spite of its ability to paralyze host larvae at all densities but it was not able to lay eggs at 14 ± 1°C. While at temperatures of 26 and 35 ± 1°C it was able to paralyze their host larvae and laying eggs which were developed to larvae and pupae. Finally the parasitism efficacy and biological performance of the parasitoid B. hebetor were increased as a result of increasing its larval host.

Field and laboratory studies were conducted in the south Baghdad aiming at determining population dynamics and the host preference of Aonidiella orientalis on citrus four cultivars (Lemon Citrus limon, Bergamot C. auranitum, Mandarin C. reticulata and Orange C. sinensis), Throughout the season 2002. Results showed that the numerical density on fruits more than leaves (20.4, 6.0 insects/cm² respectively), The lemon fruits were the most susceptible cultivar to the infestation by A. orientalis, while the mandarin leaves were most susceptible cultivar than other cultivars. The results indicated that lower parts of citrus tree were best preferred than mid and upper part …
Studying Hiv Risk In Vulnerable Communities: Methodological And Reporting Shortcomings In The Young Men’S Study In New York City, Ananya Mukherjea, Salvador Vidal-Oritz
Studying Hiv Risk In Vulnerable Communities: Methodological And Reporting Shortcomings In The Young Men’S Study In New York City, Ananya Mukherjea, Salvador Vidal-Oritz
The Qualitative Report
This article considers demographic categories used in the Young Men’s Study on HIV risk for men who have sex with men. We critique oversimplified pan-ethnic categories and the polarization of US racial discourse. We also interrogate the use of certain gender and sexuality markers that produced confusing results in this study. We use a critical standpoint derived from cultural studies to suggest that quantitative and qualitative methods of studying health risks and intimate behaviors in vulnerable populations require reorganization to more accurately represent the lives of members of these groups. Interviews, surveys, and statistics can be crude and lacking in …

Avian Affairs: A Study Of The Occurrence And Benefits Of Extra-Pair Breeding Behavior In Eastern Kingbirds (Tyrannus Tyrannus), Amy Catherine Dolan
Dissertations and Theses
Over three consecutive breeding seasons I examined the breeding system of Eastern Kingbirds in Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in SE, Oregon. To assess genetic paternity, I optimized seven microsatellite markers and determined that extra pair paternity was common. Extra-pair young were present in approximately 60% of nests, representing 47% of young. I examined implications of extra-pair paternity from three perspectives.
First, I examined the impact of extra-pair paternity on the opportunity for sexual selection within a socially monogamous system and identified correlates of male reproductive success. Some males were successful at the expense of others, and 24% of males did …
Explant Analysis Of Total Disc Replacement, Paul A. Anderson, Steven M. Kurtz, Jeffrey M. Toth
Explant Analysis Of Total Disc Replacement, Paul A. Anderson, Steven M. Kurtz, Jeffrey M. Toth
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Explant analysis of human disc prostheses allow early evaluation of the host response to the prosthesis and the response of the prosthesis from the host. Furthermore, early predictions of failure and wear can be obtained. Thus far, about 2-3% of disc prostheses have been removed. Observed wear patterns are similar to that of appendicular prostheses including abrasions/scratching, burnishing, surface deformation, fatigue, and embedded debris. Chemically the polymeric components have shown little degradation in short-term implantation. In metal on metal prostheses the histologic responses consist of large numbers of metallic particles with occasional macrophages and giant cells. Only rare cases of …

Effect Of Jatropha Gossypiifolia Leaf Extracts On Three Lepidoptera Species, J. Arnubio Valencia, Brigitte Frérot, Herve Guénego, Diego F. Múnera, Maria Fátima De Sá Grossi, Paul André Calatayud
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Leaf extracts of Jatropha gossypiifolia L. (Euphorbiaceae) contain compounds that are toxic to insects. In this study, these extracts were tested against larvae of three lepidopteran species, Busseola fusca (Fuller) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Ostrinia nubilalis Hubner (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) and Sesamia nonagrioides Lef. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), which are important pests of maize in Africa, Europe and Mediterranean countries, respectively. Leaf extracts were shown to be highly toxic to neonate larvae of B. fusca and O. nubilalis quickly after they were ingested. In contrast, no effect was found on fourth instar O. nubilalis and a low level of toxicity was observed on neonates of …

Contribution Of Natural Food Sources To Reproductive Behaviour, Fecundity And Longevity Of Ceratitis Cosyra, C. Fasciventris And C. Capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae), A. Manrakhan, S. A. Lux
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
The influence of food sources comprising the natural diet on the reproductive behaviour, fecundity and longevity of three African fruit flies Ceratitis cosyra (Walker), C. fasciventris (Bezzi) and C. capitata (Wiedemann) was investigated. Three natural food sources, varying in protein and sugar content, were evaluated. These included bird droppings (farm chicken), aphid honeydew and guava (Psidium guajava L.) juice. For C. fasciventris and C. capitata, flies fed on a protein-rich diet displayed higher frequency of calling, mating and oviposition than flies fed on a protein-poor diet, whilst for C. cosyra, quality of diet significantly influenced the mating behaviour of the …
Study Of Propagation And Detection Methods Of Terahertz Radiation For Spectroscopy And Imaging, Aparajita Bandyopadhyay
Study Of Propagation And Detection Methods Of Terahertz Radiation For Spectroscopy And Imaging, Aparajita Bandyopadhyay
Dissertations
The applications of terahertz (THz, 1 THz is 1012 cycles per second or 300 pm in wavelength) radiation are rapidly expanding. In particular, THz imaging is emerging as a powerful technique to spatially map a wide variety of objects with spectral features which are present for many materials in THz region. Objects buried within dielectric structures can also be imaged due to the transparency of most dielectrics in this regime. Unfortunately, the image quality in such applications is inherently influenced by the scattering introduced by the sample inhomogeneities and by the presence of barriers that reduces both the transmitted power …
Linear And Log-Linear Models Based On Generalized Inverse Sampling Scheme, Soumi Lahiri
Linear And Log-Linear Models Based On Generalized Inverse Sampling Scheme, Soumi Lahiri
Dissertations
This dissertation explores the development of novel statistical techniques and the applications in modeling rare events using generalized inverse sampling scheme. The Poisson model can be used for independent frequency count data. Also negative binomial and negative multinomial (NMn) models are applicable when there is only one rare category in the population. Here, a new model, based on generalized inverse sampling scheme, is introduced to study several rare events simultaneouly. The generalized inverse sampling scheme is used to study several rare categories of a population. Samples are drawn until a predetermined number of the total of the rare events occur. …
Novel Characterization Of Materials Using Thz Spectroscopic Techniques, Amartya Sengupta
Novel Characterization Of Materials Using Thz Spectroscopic Techniques, Amartya Sengupta
Dissertations
Significant scientific and technical challenges within the terahertz (THz) frequency regime have recently motivated an array of new research activities. This involves numerous applications of this region of the electromagnetic spectrum between approximately 100 GHz (3mm) and 3 THz (100 µm) for both spectroscopy and imaging purposes. THz time domain spectroscopy is unique in that the time domain waveforms are measured and the complex optical constants are deduced directly without resorting to the Kramers-Kronig Analysis.
In this work, THz spectroscopy has been used to characterize different types of materials. Materials investigated consisted of semiconductors, gate dielectric materials, high energetic materials …
Mathematical Problems Arising In Interfacial Electrohydrodynamics, Dmitri Tseluiko
Mathematical Problems Arising In Interfacial Electrohydrodynamics, Dmitri Tseluiko
Dissertations
In this work we consider the nonlinear stability of thin films in the presence of electric fields. We study a perfectly conducting thin film flow down an inclined plane in the presence of an electric field which is uniform in its undisturbed state, and normal to the plate at infinity. In addition, the effect of normal electric fields on films lying above, or hanging from, horizontal substrates is considered. Systematic asymptotic expansions are used to derive fully nonlinear long wave model equations for the scaled interface motion and corresponding flow fields. For the case of an inclined plane, higher order …
Facial Analysis In Video : Detection And Recognition, Peichung Shih
Facial Analysis In Video : Detection And Recognition, Peichung Shih
Dissertations
Biometric authentication systems automatically identify or verify individuals using physiological (e.g., face, fingerprint, hand geometry, retina scan) or behavioral (e.g., speaking pattern, signature, keystroke dynamics) characteristics. Among these biometrics, facial patterns have the major advantage of being the least intrusive. Automatic face recognition systems thus have great potential in a wide spectrum of application areas. Focusing on facial analysis, this dissertation presents a face detection method and numerous feature extraction methods for face recognition.
Concerning face detection, a video-based frontal face detection method has been developed using motion analysis and color information to derive field of interests, and distribution-based distance …
Interactions Of Ionic Liquids With Uranium And Its Implications On Biotransformation, Chengdong Zhang
Interactions Of Ionic Liquids With Uranium And Its Implications On Biotransformation, Chengdong Zhang
Dissertations
Room temperature ionic liquids (ILs) are pure ionic compounds with melting points below 100°C, which have drawn great attention due to their many unique properties. They have been widely used in organic synthesis, analytical chemistry, and biochemistry. Although ionic liquids have been used to extract metals and radionuclides, there is no systematic study on the interactions of ILs with uranium and their effects on the biotransformation of uranium.
My research focused on: (1) the interactions between uranium and ionic liquids in aqueous solution; and (2) biotransformation of uranium in the presence of ILs. The interactions between three representative ionic liquids, …
Structural Auditing Methodologies For Controlled Terminologies, Hua Min
Structural Auditing Methodologies For Controlled Terminologies, Hua Min
Dissertations
Several auditing methodologies for large controlled terminologies are developed. These are applied to the Unified Medical Language System XXXX and the National Cancer Institute Thesaurus (NCIT). Structural auditing methodologies are based on the structural aspects such as IS-A hierarchy relationships groups of concepts assigned to semantic types and groups of relationships defined for concepts. Structurally uniform groups of concepts tend to be semantically uniform. Structural auditing methodologies focus on concepts with unlikely or rare configuration. These concepts have a high likelihood for errors.
One of the methodologies is based on comparing hierarchical relationships between the META and SN, two major …
Gas Chromatography On Self Assembled Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes, Mahesh Kumar Karwa
Gas Chromatography On Self Assembled Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes, Mahesh Kumar Karwa
Dissertations
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are nano-sized carbon-based sorbents, which have high surface area, large aspect ratio, can be self-assembled and are known to be stable at high temperatures. It is therefore conceivable that separation techniques, such as, gas chromatography (GC) can benefit from their unique properties and nano-scale interactions. Self-assembly, in-contrast to packing these materials in a tube, prevents them from agglomeration and thus facilitates in retaining their nano-characteristics. In this research, novel substrates, such as, steel tubings, on a scaled-up level have been explored for the self-assembly process of CNTs, for applications such as gas chromatography, where the CNTs served …

Compulsory Education And Substantive Due Process: Asserting Student Rights To A Safe And Healthy School Environment, Rebecca Aviel
Compulsory Education And Substantive Due Process: Asserting Student Rights To A Safe And Healthy School Environment, Rebecca Aviel
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
This Article asserts that students have a substantive due process right to a public school facility that meets minimum health and safety requirements. Students who cannot afford private school are effectively required by law to spend six to eight hours a day in whatever facilities their state education system provides. Constitutionally protected rights to personal security and bodily integrity are implicated when these facilities directly threaten students’ immediate heath and safety – for example, locked or non-functional bathrooms, unsafe drinking water, or classroom walls covered with asthma-inducing mold. Compulsory education under these conditions violates the substantive limits on state action …
