Empirical Study Of Public Bureaucratic And Private Non-Profit Organizations And The Adoption Of A Market Orientation, Leslie Tworoger, Thomas Tworoger Jan 2006

Empirical Study Of Public Bureaucratic And Private Non-Profit Organizations And The Adoption Of A Market Orientation, Leslie Tworoger, Thomas Tworoger

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the uses of power bases by leaders of private non-profit organizations and leaders in a bureaucratic governmental organization and the adoption of a market orientation by the firm. The study was conducted on a state bureaucracy and the corresponding newly privatized agency taking over the developed services. Today, in till attempt to make government bureaucracies more efficient and economical, there is a major shift in governmental services to the private non-profit sector (O'Connell, 1996; Rosenthal, 2000; Alexander, 2000). These private agencies are expected to employ more business-like methods (Alexander, …

About Synergy And Dissynergy: Change, Strategic And Chaotic Decision Choices, And Resultant Outcomes, Chris Crawford

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

Change occurs at a rate quicker than most organizations can strategically respond. In fact, like any gambler, decision making in the current business environment is little more than playing the odds in some cases. Nonetheless, organizations attempting to succeed must try to minimize the chaotic element of decision making through the introduction of strategic thinking. Moving toward strategic thought can sometimes propel organizations into a synergistic spiral of decision making - where one decision reveals further opportunities. Likewise, organizations that fail to prepare for the chaotic will find themselves falling into a dissynergistic spiral where failure breeds even more failure. …

Perceptions Of Representational Efficacy In Local And National Teacher Unions, Steven Lash Jan 2006

Perceptions Of Representational Efficacy In Local And National Teacher Unions, Steven Lash

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

While the majority of teachers are affiliated with a union, the quality of representation is unclear. Historically, trade unions have served as a medium for workers to collectively interact with management and, thus, they have served as the primary means of communication between two entities. However, management is diverse for educators; both local administrators and national politicians alike are able to influence a teacher' work. Teachers rely on unions not only for contract negotiation within their own districts, but as an advocate on national educational issues, such as the recent No Child Left Behind Act (2002, as cited in National …

Graduate Research Papers

Educational leadership is a calling. Changes in the world are reflected within the school walls; principals must be ready to accept the challenges the lie ahead. An Investigation Of The Impact Of The Pace Of Change In Post -Ipo Corporate Governance On Firm Performance, Son A. Le Jan 2006

An Investigation Of The Impact Of The Pace Of Change In Post -Ipo Corporate Governance On Firm Performance, Son A. Le

Doctoral Dissertations

In this study, I examine the impact of changes in post-IPO corporate governance on firm performance. Changes in corporate governance affect firm performance in various ways. Some theories such as agency and resource dependence theories predict that fast-paced change in post-IPO corporate governance will enhance firm performance. Other theories such as the resource-based view offer the opposite prediction that slowpaced change is more beneficial for firm performance. I, therefore, develop competing hypotheses regarding the impact of change in post-IPO corporate governance on firm performance.

IPO firms have unique characteristics. They are often small, young firms. As a matter of fact, …

Champions Of Change: Reinventing Democracy Through Land Law Reform, John R. Nolon Jan 2006

Champions Of Change: Reinventing Democracy Through Land Law Reform, John R. Nolon

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This Article explores the prospects of achieving policy coherence in the field of land use regulation. It explains how, as municipal governments react to pressures and crises at the local level, they discover and adopt new strategies in a constant process of experimentation. Through a properly constructed legal framework, critical information can be relayed from local to higher levels of government, state and federal legislators and judges can respond, and a "system" of law can evolve. Using theories developed in the fields of systems analysis and diffusion of innovations, the Article describes the process by which local communities perceive land …

An ethnographic case study approach of a Pennsylvania non-profit organization was used to develop an understanding of leaders' values as they relate to organizational culture and organizational efficacy using testimony of organizational leaders and followers as well as organizational documents. Past Executive Directors, the current Executive Director, past Chairpersons of the Board of Directors and a random sample of Leadership Council members were interviewed using a semi-structured interview guide to answer the following research questions:

How, if at all, do the values of a leader affect the organizational efficacy?

How, if at all, do the values of a leader affect …

Principle-Based Dialogue: A Model Of Consulting That Applies The Insights Of Robert K. Greenleaf To Organizational Development And Transcendent Leadership, Paul M. Nakai

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

In the early 1980s one of my clients, Harry Bubb [past Chairman and CEO of Pacific Financial Companies], gave me a copy of Robert Greenleaf's book, Servant-Leadership. Harry and I would subsequently have long conversations about his view of corporate responsibility and leadership development; Greenleaf's words had struck a resonant chord with both of us. Harry felt that leadership was a fundamental state of mind-as important as any attitude, trait, displayed behavior or result achieved. Back then, I must admit, I did not fully understand his thinking, although I was mesmerized by his enthusiasm and his many ideas. In addition …

Intentional Discipleship: Spiritual Formation As Trinitarian Immersion For The 21st Century, Craig W. Henningfield Jan 2006

Intentional Discipleship: Spiritual Formation As Trinitarian Immersion For The 21st Century, Craig W. Henningfield

Doctor of Ministry

The local Christian congregation is remarkably active. Pastors serve the congregation in a variety of roles. Church leaders meet to plan so that tasks, funds and activities are properly ordered. Church members participate in the various ministries and opportunities offered. Citizens of the local community take advantage of programs designed for them. Christian congregations, sometimes called "religious malls," are busy.

Yet, with all the activity, church members still come and go, complain about the decisions being made, resist changes in their "religious tradition," struggle with various addictions, expect more than is being provided, and wonder how Christianity relates to their …

A New Theory And Measure Of Ethical Work Climate: The Psychological Process Model (Ppm) And The Ethical Climate Index (Eci), Anke Arnaud

Management, Marketing and Operations - Daytona Beach

With this dissertation I developed a new theory and measure of ethical work climate (EWC). Currently, there exists one dominant theory and measure of EWC developed by Victor and Cullen (1988, 1987). Even though researchers have identified problems with this theory, such as inconsistencies with regard to its limited theoretical scope and troubling psychometric properties, it is the most widely utilized framework for conceptualizing and testing EWC. Therefore, I propose to develop an improved theory and measure of EWC, one capable of addressing some of the principle shortcomings of earlier efforts. Building on Rest’s (1986, 1979) “Four-Component” model of individual-level …

The Evolution Of Catholic Schools In The Diocese Of Grand Rapids, Michigan: A Case Study, Bernard T. Stanko

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This longitudinal case study examined the origins, growth, and development of Catholic schools in the Diocese of Grand Rapids, Michigan. The purpose of this study was to understand how the Catholic schools evolved over time.

Four eras between 1833 and 2005 were investigated and described. Each era corresponds with changes to the physical size of the Diocese of Grand Rapids. These periods also correspond to sociological events that were also occurring. Data on Catholic schools were collected for each era. A conceptual framework was applied that considered the institutional environment in which the schools were founded and the task environment …
