Creating New Markets For African Sorghum Farmers, Intsormil Jul 2006

Creating New Markets For African Sorghum Farmers, Intsormil

INTSORMIL Impacts and Bulletins

Lack of international markets for locally grown cereals such as sorghum is a major constraint to economic development for West African farmers. Lack of international markets has traditionally resulted in price declines in normal and good weather years since consumers can only eat so much of a staple. Once consumers have enough of the staple, prices collapse, as there are no other markets. These price declines discourage farmers from using higher input levels and therefore achieving productivity gains. Hence, facilitating the growth of the food and feed processing industries for the basic staples is critical for the rapid economic growth …

Assessing The Acceptability Of Chocolate Chip Cookies Formulated With Fat Substitutes, Marcel R. Gailes Jul 2006

Assessing The Acceptability Of Chocolate Chip Cookies Formulated With Fat Substitutes, Marcel R. Gailes

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate consumer acceptance of fat substitutes as replacements for butter in chocolate chip cookies. This experiment was designed with the aim to examine how fat substitutes affect the sensory and physical qualities that contribute to acceptability of chocolate chip cookies. The fat substitutes used in my investigation included flaxseed meal, tofu, nonfat plain yogurt, unsweetened applesauce, white bean paste, and a shortening made of soy protein and canola oil known as Spectrum Spread. The fat content of the cookie dough consisted of 100% butter in the control and 25% butter and 75% substitute …

The Agricultural Production Systems Simulator (APSIM) is a mature and stable modelling framework used widely in Australia in the domain of farming systems research and extension. It is capable of simulating a diverse range of farming systems including broad acre dryland and irrigated cropping, small holder farming, on-farm agroforestry systems including the interaction of trees and crops, and through collaboration with other groups, integrated stock and cropping enterprises. APSIM was developed primarily as a research tool to investigate on-farm management practices, natural resource issues including salinity and solute movement, climate risk studies looking at modifying farm practices and climate change …

Changing Maine, 1960-2010: Teaching Guide, Richard Barringer, New England Environmental Finance Center

Maine History & Policy Development

Unlike forty years ago, none of us is now certain what the future holds for Maine – except that it will be different. Maine has been transformed by the events of the recent decades. We have come into a new world, a new time – a new historical era, if you will. This new era, like previous eras in Maine history, will require of us new ways of thinking, new ways of understanding, new ways of organizing ourselves as a community of people, if the values and culture we share and cherish are to endure and flourish.

The Integrated Tool for Economic and Ecological Modelling (ITE2M) is developed to assess landscape services of different land use options. ITE2M is a network of several models addressing agroeconomy, agricultural policy and environmental services with respect to soil, water as well as floral and faunal biodiversity. As a central part of ITE2M the agro-economic simulation model ProLand predicts land use distributions that are optimal from an economic point of view. ProLand calculates the spatially differentiated maximum land rent accounting for different natural, technical, economic and political boundary conditions. The site specific outputs of ProLand comprise land rent, land use and …

Analysis Of Minority Student Recruiting Within The Denver Health Paramedic School, Mike Nugent Jul 2006

Analysis Of Minority Student Recruiting Within The Denver Health Paramedic School, Mike Nugent

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Since its inception in 1999, the Denver Health Paramedic School has had central to its mission the successful recruitment of minority paramedic students. Thus far, the education program has failed to produce a student body representative of minority ratios found within the state of Colorado. An action research model was employed to study the myriad of issues affecting successful minority recruitment. Through data collection including training program surveys and minority paramedic graduate interviews, the causative factors for this recruitment failure were identified and data-driven intervention strategies to improve this situation were recommended. Following consultation and discussion between the research collaborative …

The Relationship Between The Health Behaviors Of Female University Freshmen And Their Academic Success, Courtney Taylor

MSN Research Projects

The purpose o f this study was to characterize the relationship between the health behaviors and academic achievement o f university women. To this end, female freshmen at Mississippi University for Women were given questionnaires measuring their healthrelated lifestyle habits that were then correlated with the students’ grade point averages. Lifestyle habits were assessed via the Wellness Worksheet questionnaire (WW), and academic success, first semester grade point averages (GPA). The analysis revealed a moderately weak and positive relationship between healthier lifestyle choices and first semester GPA, r = .34. Among the behaviors addressed by the WW, alcohol and other drug …

Soil Microbial Community Composition As Affected By Restoration Practices In California Grassland, Rebecca E. Drenovsky, Martin Pothoff, Kerri L. Steenwerth, Louise E. Jackson, Rainer G. Joergensen, Kate M. Scow Jul 2006

Soil Microbial Community Composition As Affected By Restoration Practices In California Grassland, Rebecca E. Drenovsky, Martin Pothoff, Kerri L. Steenwerth, Louise E. Jackson, Rainer G. Joergensen, Kate M. Scow

Biology

Agricultural practices have strong impacts on soil microbes including both the indices related to biomass and activity as well as those related to community composition. In a grassland restoration project in California, where native perennial bunchgrasses were introduced into non-native annual grassland after a period of intensive tillage, weeding, and herbicide use to reduce the annual seed bank, microbial community composition was investigated. Three treatments were compared: annual grassland, bare soil fallow, and restored perennial grassland. Soil profiles down to 80cm in depth were investigated in four separate layers (0–15, 15–30, 30–60, and 60–80cm) using both phospholipid ester-linked fatty acid …

The Effects Of The Corporate Diversification Trend On Trademarks, Katherine E. Halmen Jul 2006

The Effects Of The Corporate Diversification Trend On Trademarks, Katherine E. Halmen

Marquette Intellectual Property Law Review

In today's business world, companies are increasingly adopting diversification strategies through which they expand into diverse and unrelated business areas. Of additional importance with regard to trademarks and the future of trademark law is the fact that the trend toward corporate diversification is growing. To address the impact of the corporate diversification trend upon trademark law, courts have utilized various methodologies. Some courts have focused primarily upon the reasonably prudent consumer and how he or she is affected by corporate diversification. With regard to the use of trademarks on a variety of products, courts have often taken into account whether …

The Role Of Higher Education In America: A Spa Or A Smörgåsbord?, Amany Saleh, Marcia Lamkin, David Cox

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

American higher education has a long and rich tradition of seeking higher moral and civic purposes in its endeavors. . . [C]ampuses have been the sites of debate on the critical issues of the day and faculty have sought to provide students with tools for rigorous analysis, critical reflection . . . . Now more than ever, higher education is challenged to educate the leaders of tomorrow and to connect those future leaders with the world of today. (Hollander 1999, v).

Impacts Of Agriculture And Dairy Farming On Groundwater Quality: An Optimization Problem, Tomaz Dentinho, R. Minciardi, M. Robba, Roberto Sacile, V. Silva

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

A decision model for groundwater quality preservation in areas affected by intensive agriculture and dairy farming, with specific reference to the Azores islands, is presented. In these islands, the exigency to find appropriate instruments to support decisions in Integrated Water Management (IWM) is particularly felt because the increase of tourism and the dairy farming have increased water demands and depletion of water quality. An optimization problem, in terms of decision variables, objectives, and constraints is formalized. The physical/chemical/ecological models are embedded as constraints in the decision model. Specifically, four types of models (hydraulic model, chemical model, agricultural model, and dairy …
