Background and Objectives: Vamorolone demonstrated similar efficacy for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) compared with prednisone in a 24-week exploratory analysis and may reduce key side effects compared with classic corticosteroids. In this study, we compare the efficacy and anthropometric effect of vamorolone 6 mg/kg/d with prednisone 0.75 mg/kg/d and deflazacort 0.9 mg/kg/d in steroid-naïve boys aged 4 to < 7 years using data from 2 trials. Methods: VISION-DMD was a phase 2b, 48-week randomized, double-blind trial assessing vamorolone 2 and 6 mg/kg/d vs placebo and prednisone 0.75 mg/kg/d to 24 weeks. Finding the Optimum Steroid Regimen for DMD (FOR-DMD) was a double-blind, parallel-group randomized trial comparing daily prednisone 0.75 mg/kg/d, daily deflazacort 0.9 mg/kg/d, and intermittent prednisone 0.75 mg/kg (10/10 days on/off). Entropy balancing generated weighted data for mixed model for repeated measures analyses that compared VISION-DMD vamorolone 6 mg/kg/d efficacy and anthropometric outcomes with FOR-DMD prednisone and deflazacort outcomes at 6 and 12 months. Inclusion criteria were boys with genetically confirmed DMD, age 4 to < 7 years, ambulatory, and able to complete a time-to-stand (TTSTAND) assessment in < 10 seconds at baseline. Results: All interventions showed motor improvements relative to baseline at 6 and 12 months. Using the weighted cohorts and at 12 months, vamorolone 6 mg/kg/d (n = 28) had similar changes in TTSTAND velocity, the primary motor endpoint component in both trials, vs daily prednisone (n = 50) or deflazacort (n = 55; mean baseline age 5.42 years all groups), but with CIs overlapping minimal clinically important thresholds of 0.023 rises per second (TTSTAND velocity least squares mean [LSM] difference [95% CI]: vamorolone 6 mg/kg/d vs prednisone 0.75 mg/kg/d, 0.004 rises per second [−0.025 to 0.032] and vs deflazacort 0.9 mg/kg/d, 0.001 rises per second [−0.027 to 0.028]). Body mass index (BMI) Z-scores increased in all groups, greatest with vamorolone (12-month LSM difference [95% CI]: vamorolone vs prednisone 0.57 [0.24–0.90]; vamorolone vs deflazacort 0.29 [0.03–0.56]), whereas growth slowdown occurred in prednisone- and deflazacort-treated boys but not vamorolone (12-month LSM difference in height Z-scores [95% CI]: vamorolone vs prednisone 0.57 [0.24–0.90]; vamorolone vs deflazacort 0.72 [0.53–0.91]). Discussion: Vamorolone demonstrated numerically similar TTSTAND velocity changes to prednisone and deflazacort at 1 year; however, interpretations of differences are limited by 95% CIs crossing minimally important difference thresholds. Further evidence of the growth-protective effect of vamorolone was observed; however, all treatments increased BMI. Vamorolone provides a linear growth-protective classic corticosteroid alternative.

Cystinosis is a rare lysosomal storage disorder that affects approximately 1 in 100,000 to 200,000 live births worldwide. Long-term graft success in cystinosis depends on cysteamine adherence and structured multidisciplinary transition, supported by protocols developed by both pediatric nephrologists and hospital organizations. This review explores institutional and regional care models, structured programs such as the RISE protocol and Got Transition's Six Core Elements, and major barriers including adult nephrology expertise, psychosocial stressors, and insurance coverage gaps. Additionally, we explore the impact of digital health tools for their role in supporting cysteamine adherence and maintaining continuity of care. Emerging technologies such …

However, these plastic products that come into direct or indirect contact with foods can release micro- and nanoplastics through various physical and chemical processes. These micro- and nanoplastics can accumulate in the human body through bioaccumulation and other pathways and have become one of the emerging contaminants threatening food safety and human health. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the research progress on the generation pathways, release mechanisms, potential health …

[Objective] This paper aims to investigate the effects of microwave and roasting pretreatment methods on volatile compounds and active ingredients in flaxseed oil. [Methods] Flaxseeds were pretreated by microwave (720 W, 2–8 min) and roasting (140–200 ℃, 30 min), and then flaxseed oil was prepared by cold pressing. Using untreated cold-pressed flaxseed oil as a control, the differences in volatile compounds were analyzed by headspace gas chromatography–ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS) and an electronic nose. Additionally, the contents of tocopherols, phytosterols, and total phenolics were determined. [Results] A total of 72 volatile compounds are identified by HS-GC-IMS analysis, including aldehydes (20 …

Traditional sensory evaluation of food is affected by subjectivity and other factors, resulting in significant limitations. Electroencephalography (EEG), owing to its advantages of high temporal resolution, non-invasiveness, and real-time dynamic monitoring, offers an objective neurophysiological perspective and analytical approach to address this issue, effectively advancing food science research from subjective descriptions to objective neural decoding. This paper systematically reviews the applications of EEG in food flavor recognition and prediction, objective evaluation of food quality, and analysis of food nutrition and consumer behavior. In light of the current state of technological development, it is proposed that multimodal technology integration and machine …

A Review Of Juvenile Solitary Confinement In The United States: Why Developmental Science Supports Banning Isolation Of Youth, Morgan R. Wagner, Krystia Reed, April Thomas
Northwestern Journal of Human Rights
The use of solitary confinement in carceral settings has been prevalent in the United States for as long as the justice system has been in place. The practice of isolating people who are incarcerated from the general prison population was adopted in the juvenile justice system as well, despite the system’s purported focus on rehabilitation. This paper reviews the developmental psychological literature suggesting that solitary confinement can harm adolescents in a variety of ways (psychological, psychosocial, and physical). We then discuss the prevalence of juvenile solitary confinement in federal and state courts. Finally, considering this research, we identify goals for …

Objective
To evaluate the use of longitudinal Health Information Exchange data to assess changes in healthcare utilization and selected clinical outcomes associated with community-based organization interventions addressing housing instability and food insecurity. Methods
A retrospective pre-post study design was used to analyze two distinct community-based organization cohorts within a regional Health Information Exchange. The housing cohort included 228 individuals who received housing placement services, and the nutrition cohort included 786 individuals enrolled in a medically tailored meal program. Healthcare utilization and clinical outcomes were compared during the 365 days before and after program enrollment. Outcomes included inpatient admissions, emergency department …An Ecophysiological Approach To Improving Health Outcomes Of Ornamental Shrimp During Aquarium Trade And Transportation, Sancha Conway Holroyd, John Spicer, Robert P. Ecophysiology examines the interactions between an organism’s physiology and its environment. It seeks to understand how an organism functions and adapts under changing conditions. This has direct applications to live-trade aquaculture sectors, including the ornamental aquarium trade, where traded animals experience a variety of changing, and often stressful, environmental conditions that can threaten their health and survival. This review proposes a role for ecophysiology in managing organismal health, using Hatch (1962) theoretical framework of disease and dysfunction as a foundation for defining and distinguishing health. We focus on tropical (marine and freshwater) ornamental shrimp as an exemplar group to highlight …
