Identification, Sequencing, Expression And Evolutionary Relationships Of The 11s Seed Storage Protein Gene In Chenopodium Quinoa Willd., Marie Renee Barrett Balzotti Jul 2006

Identification, Sequencing, Expression And Evolutionary Relationships Of The 11s Seed Storage Protein Gene In Chenopodium Quinoa Willd., Marie Renee Barrett Balzotti

Theses and Dissertations

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) is an Andean crop adapted to harsh environmental conditions and containing a high and well-balanced protein composition. Two seed storage proteins, the 2S albumin and 11S globulin, are the major amino acid reservoirs for the developing seedling. An in-depth study of the genes encoding these proteins is necessary to understand the source of quinoa's protein quality. Our objectives include identification and sequencing of the 11S genomic and cDNA clones, analysis of 11S expression profiles in different quinoa accessions and evaluation of evolutionary relationships between the sequence of the 11S gene in quinoa and homologous genes in other …

Water Reduction Using Ww-B. Dahl Pastures To Produce Beef: Potential To Reduce Aquifer Irrigation And Sustain More Intensive Agriculture For Diverse Western Rangeland Conditions, Carlos Ortega-Ochoa Jul 2006

Water Reduction Using Ww-B. Dahl Pastures To Produce Beef: Potential To Reduce Aquifer Irrigation And Sustain More Intensive Agriculture For Diverse Western Rangeland Conditions, Carlos Ortega-Ochoa

2006

High rates of water withdrawal from the Ogallala aquifer threatens sustainability of various agricultural uses. Since rainfall patterns differ across many Western regions where beef grazing and combined beef and crop rotation practices prevail, locating grasses that meet high nutrition standards for beef while dramatically reducing water requirements (from irrigation of rainfall) under normal and drought conditions rises in importance. We present results of a two year study on 54 hectares using WW-B.Dahl [Bothriochloa bladhii (Retz) S.T. Blake] pasture. For two consecutive summers, we evaluated forage standing crops and the quality of WW-B.Dahl grass under summer grazing conditions subject to …

Simple Sequence Repeat Development, Polymorphism And Genetic Mapping In Quinoa (Chenopodium Quinoa Willd.), David Jarvis

Theses and Dissertations

Quinoa is an important, highly nutritional grain crop in the Andean region of South America. DNA markers and linkage maps are important tools for the improvement of underdeveloped crops such as quinoa. The objectives of this study were to (i) develop a new set of SSR markers to augment the number of SSR markers available in quinoa, and (ii) construct a new genetic linkage map of quinoa based on SSRs using multiple recombinant-inbred line (RIL) populations. Here we report the development of 216 new polymorphic SSR markers from libraries enriched for GA, CAA, and AAT repeats, as well as 6 …

"Th' Offense Pardons Itself": Sex And The Church In Othello And Measure For Measure, Jeffrey Wayne Windsor Jul 2006

"Th' Offense Pardons Itself": Sex And The Church In Othello And Measure For Measure, Jeffrey Wayne Windsor

Theses and Dissertations

In 1604, James had newly ascended to the throne and England was now part of Great Britain. The Puritans-largely silenced during Elizabeth's reign-began again to assert political influence and call for reformation to both the state and the church. This is the context in which Shakespeare wrote Othello and Measure for Measure. In both plays, the role of the government in Cyprus or Vienna hinges upon the passions of a single authority figure. Both Angelo and Othello cause political unrest because they mismanage sexuality. In the case of Othello, his unfounded sexual jealousy leads to the death of Desdemona, Emilia, …

Health-Related Quality Of Life Following A Clinical Weight Loss Intervention Among Overweight And Obese Adults: Intervention And 24 Month Follow-Up Effects, Bryan J. Blissmer, Deborah Riebe, Gabriela Dye, Laurie Ruggiero, Geoffrey Greene, Marjorie Caldwell

Kinesiology Faculty Publications

Background:

Despite a growing literature on the efficacy of behavioral weight loss interventions, we still know relatively little about the long terms effects they have on HRQL. Therefore, we conducted a study to investigate the immediate post-intervention (6 months) and long-term (12 and 24 months) effects of clinically based weight management programs on HRQL.

Methods:

We conducted a randomized clinical trial in which all participants completed a 6 month clinical weight loss program and were randomized into two 6-month extended care groups. Participants then returned at 12 and 24 months for follow-up assessments. A total of 144 individuals …

Chitosan Protects Cooked Ground Beef And Turkey Against Clostridium Perfringens Spores During Chilling, Vijay Juneja, Harshavardhan Thippareddi, Latiful Bari, Yasuhiro Inatsu, Shinichi Kawamoto, Mendel Friedman Jul 2006

Chitosan Protects Cooked Ground Beef And Turkey Against Clostridium Perfringens Spores During Chilling, Vijay Juneja, Harshavardhan Thippareddi, Latiful Bari, Yasuhiro Inatsu, Shinichi Kawamoto, Mendel Friedman

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

We investigated the inhibition of Clostridium perfringens spore germination and outgrowth by the biopolymer chitosan during abusive chilling of cooked ground beef (25% fat) and turkey (7% fat) obtained from a retail store. Chitosan was mixed into the thawed beef or turkey at concentrations of 0.5%, 1.0%, 2.0%, or 3.0% (w/w) along with a heat-activated 3-strain spore cocktail to obtain a final spore concentration of 2 to 3 log10 CFU/g. Samples (5 g) of the ground beef or turkey mixtures were then vacuum-packaged and cooked to 60 ◦C in 1 h in a temperature-controlled water bath. Thereafter, the products …

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The objective of this study was to characterize genetic, environmental, and economic factors related to the incidence of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in feedlot calves. Records from 18,112 calves representing 9 breeds (Angus, Braunvieh, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Hereford, Limousin, Pinzgauer, Red Poll, and Simmental) and 3 composite types (MARC I, MARC II, and MARC III) over a 15-yr period (1987 to 2001) were evaluated. Disease incidence was observed and recorded by station veterinary and technical staff. The incidence of BRD varied across years, with the annual observed incidence ranging from 5 to 44%. From 1987 to 1992, the annual average incidence …
