Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
A 3-year experiment evaluated the effects of maternal nutrition on growth and reproductive performance of heifer calves. Supplementing cows with protein during late gestation resulted in heifers that were heavier at weaning and breeding, had higher pregnancy rates, and calved earlier. Allowing cows to graze meadows after calving improved calf weaning weight but not heifer reproductive performance. Heifers from cows that were fed hay after calving had reduced DMI and improved residual feed intake if their dams were supplemented with protein during gestation, but ADG and G:F were not affected by dam supplementation or spring feeding strategies.

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
This study uses a mail survey to determine the value Nebraska feedyard operators place on education, experience, and area of expertise in new assistant manager hires. Using conjoint analysis, calculations are made that estimate the marginal value of moving from one level of these attributes to another. Results show that operators preferred higher levels of education and experience. However, relevant experience was preferred over formal education. As an area of expertise, animal health was valued highest by operators of feedyards in all size categories for new assistant managers. Personnel management was valued lowest. Results suggest prospective assistant managers can maximize …

Statistics Used In The Nebraska Beef Report And Their Purpose
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
The purpose of beef cattle and beef product research at UNL is to provide reference information that represents the various populations (cows, calves, heifers, feeders, carcasses, retail products, etc.) of beef production. Obviously, the researcher cannot apply treatments to every member of a population; therefore, he/she must sample the population. The use of statistics allows the researcher and readers of the Nebraska Beef Report the opportunity to evaluate separation of random (chance) occurrences and real biological effects of a treatment. Following is a brief description of the major statistics used in the beef report. For a more detailed description of …

Evaluation Of A Cancer Awareness Campaign: Experience With A Selected Population In Karachi, Tazeen S. Ali, Sanah Baig
School of Nursing & Midwifery
The incidence and prevalence of cancer is rapidly increasing in both developed and developing countries. The most common cancers reported in Pakistan are breast and cervical cancers in females, and lung and oral cancers in males. Public awareness of cancer can play a vital role in its prevention, early diagnosis and treatment. A pilot survey conducted by the Cancer Support Group (CSG) of Aga Khan University Hospital from 2001 till 2004 to gauge the public awareness of cancer in Pakistan revealed that people were afraid of cancer and had little knowledge about its prevention and early detection. The survey also …

A Quantitative Approach Towards Establishing Normal Csp Mrna Accumulation Patterns In Escherichia Coli K12, Khadijah Aisha Mitchell
A Quantitative Approach Towards Establishing Normal Csp Mrna Accumulation Patterns In Escherichia Coli K12, Khadijah Aisha Mitchell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The cold-shock response in Escherichia coli induces a set of 26 proteins that help ensure the efficiency of transcription, translation, and DNA replication at low temperatures. Some members of this group belong to the cold-shock protein (Csp) family. In Escherichia coli K12, there are 9 homologous csp genes named cspA-cspI. The Csp family in this strain is unusual because each gene has different mechanisms of induction and gene products. Various regulation studies have been performed on individual members of this family to help understand why so many homologues exist. No literature to date has ever looked at the mRNA expression …

Can Consumer-Driven Health Care, Health Reimbursement Arrangements And Health Savings Accounts Save Employer Sponsored Health Care From Ruin, Larry Grudzien
St. Thomas Law Review
Employer sponsored health care programs have been in crisis for over ten years because, year after year, health care costs and premiums continue to increase faster than inflation. Employers have tried a number of solutions, but nothing seems to stop the trend. Between 2000 to 2006, premiums for family health coverage increased by 87% compared with general inflation growth of 18% and wage growth of 20%.2 Employee spending for health insurance coverage increased 126% between 2000 and 2004. Since 2001, the employees share of health insurance costs have soared 63% for single coverage and 58% for family coverage.3 For 2006 …

Serotonergic Involvement In The Behavioral Depression Produced By Intermittent Swim Stress, John Paul Christianson
Serotonergic Involvement In The Behavioral Depression Produced By Intermittent Swim Stress, John Paul Christianson
Doctoral Dissertations
Exposure to uncontrollable stress produces a behavioral syndrome that is often described as "behavioral depression" in the rat. Current paradigms for inducing behavioral depression utilize continuous swimming or intermittent electric shock stress. Brown et al., developed a novel strategy that combined these stressors to produce the intermittent swim stress (ISS) protocol. The purpose of this thesis was to define the behavioral outcomes of ISS that resemble behavioral depression and to begin neurochemical characterization of the phenomenon.
Two hallmark features of behavioral depression are immobility, as determined in a Forced Swim Test (FST) and escape learning deficits, as determined by operant …

Assessing The Accuracy Of The Modis Lai 1-Km Product In Southeastern United States Loblolly Pine Plantations: Accounting For Measurement Variance From Ground To Satellite, John Shepherd Iiames Jr.
Doctoral Dissertations
Leaf area index (LAI), defined here as one-half of the total leaf area per unit ground surface area (Chen, 1996), has been estimated at a global scale from spectral data processed from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor aboard two NASA EOS-AM spacecraft, Terra (launched in 1999) and Aqua (launched in 2002). The MOD15A2 LAI product is a 1 km global data product composited over an 8-day period and is derived from a three-dimensional radiative transfer model driven by an atmosphere corrected surface reflectance product (MOD09), a land cover product (MOD12) and ancillary information on surface characteristics. Genetics And Physiology Of Motility By Photorhabdus Spp, Brandye A. Michaels
Genetics And Physiology Of Motility By Photorhabdus Spp, Brandye A. Michaels
Doctoral Dissertations
Photorhabdus is a bacterial symbiont of soil nematodes and a lethal pathogen of insects. Many pathogenic or symbiotic bacteria utilize various methods of motility to reach favorable conditions, colonize a host, or have motility genes that also regulate virulence expression. It is not known how motility is regulated, or how it may confer an advantage, in the complex life cycle of Photorhabdus..
We characterized motility in Photorhabdus and found that the bacterium was motile both by swimming (movement in liquid) and swarming (movement on surfaces) under appropriate conditions. Both types of motility utilized the same peritrichous flagella and shared genetic …
Gonadal Histology And Reproductive Steroidogenesis Of Anurans Exposed To Potential Endocrine Disrupting Contaminants, Emily May La Fiandra
Gonadal Histology And Reproductive Steroidogenesis Of Anurans Exposed To Potential Endocrine Disrupting Contaminants, Emily May La Fiandra
Doctoral Dissertations
The prevalence of malformed amphibians and the association of high incidences of malformation with the presence of environmental contaminants have raised questions about the effects of environmental contaminants on the development of larval amphibians. The potential endocrine disrupting effects of pesticides suggest that the reproductive and developmental abnormalities observed in larval anurans may be due at least in part to impacts on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. The present studies investigate the effects of exposure to environmental contaminants including DDT and atrazine on the development, gonadal histology and reproductive steroidogenesis of larval anurans.
As previous monitoring at Great Bay National Wildlife Refuge …
Physiological Bases Of Parental Care In The Burying Beetles, Nicrophorus Orbicollis, Stefania Carmen Panaitof
Physiological Bases Of Parental Care In The Burying Beetles, Nicrophorus Orbicollis, Stefania Carmen Panaitof
Doctoral Dissertations
Burying beetles, Nicrophorus orbicollis, have extended biparental care. They bury and prepare small vertebrate carcasses as food for their young. While females provide the most care, single males show a remarkable behavioral compensation after a mate loss. Here, I integrate behavioral and physiological analyses of parental behavior in burying beetles by exploring how hormonal and social factors may interact to mediate brood care.
In Chapter I, I establish Juvenile Hormone (JH) profiles during a breeding bout and show that after larvae hatch, JH titers of single males and paired females are similar. JH titers of single males also respond to …
Structural Analysis Of Cytokine Signaling Modulators, Cristina Ileana Silvescu
Structural Analysis Of Cytokine Signaling Modulators, Cristina Ileana Silvescu
Doctoral Dissertations
The N-linked glycans attached to cytokine receptors modulate signal transduction by interacting with galectin-3 and generating a cell surface lattice. This opposes constitutive endocytosis and reduces the thresholds for cytokine signaling. The preferred ligands for galectin-3 are the poly-N-acetyl lactosaminylated tetra-antennary glycans which are synthesized by Mgat 5 and are present at high levels in tumor cells. A null mutation in Mgat 5 inhibits lattice formation and cancer progression in cells with an oncogenic background. GlcNAc feeding reestablishes lattice formation, cytokine signaling and tumorigenesis.
A MALDI-TOF analysis was employed to identify the N-glycans involved in modulating signal transduction in wild …
Cellular Uptake And Actions Of Bilberry Anthocyanins In Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells, Paul Everett Milbury Jr.
Cellular Uptake And Actions Of Bilberry Anthocyanins In Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells, Paul Everett Milbury Jr.
Doctoral Dissertations
Inflammation and oxidative stress play a significant role in the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). In AMD, retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells are damaged by oxidative stress and die via the process of apoptosis. Anthocyanins from fruits and berries, such as bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), possess significant antioxidant activity in vitro and have been used in "traditional medicine" to treat AMD. It is not clear whether intracellular concentrations of anthocyanins are sufficient to quench radical species and mitigate oxidative stress in vivo. In this research project, human RPE cells in vitro were used to establish an oxidative stress model in …

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
We used ndhF sequence variation to reconstruct relationships across 282 taxa representing 78 monocot families and all 12 orders. The resulting tree is highly resolved and places commelinids sister to Asparagales, with both sister to Liliales—Pandanales in the strict consensus; Pandanales are sister to Dioscoreales in the bootstrap majority-rule tree, just above Petrosaviales. Acorales are sister to all other monocots, with Alismatales sister to all but Acorales. Relationships among the four major clades of commelinids remain unresolved. Relationships within orders are consistent with those based on rbcL, alone or in combination with atpB and 18S nrDNA, and …
