Cirrhosis with ascites is associated with impaired renal function accompanied by sodium and water retention. Although it has been suggested that mediators such as nitric oxide play a role in the development of renal failure in this situation, other mechanisms underlying the process are not well understood. This study examined the role of oxidative stress in mediating renal damage during the development of cirrhosis in order to understand mechanisms involved in the process. It was shown that carbon tetrachloride– or thioacetamide-induced cirrhosis in rats results in oxidative stress in the kidney as seen by increased lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation, …

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis is a major cause of mortality after liver cirrhosis. Altered permeability of the mucosa and deficiencies in host immune defenses through bacterial translocation from the intestine due to intestinal bacterial overgrowth have been implicated in the development of this complication. Molecular mechanisms underlying the process are not well known. In order to understand mechanisms involved in translocation of bacteria, this study explored the role of oxidative stress in mediating changes in intestinal mucosal glycosylation and luminal bacterial content during cirrhosis. CCl4-induced cirrhosis in rats led to prolonged oxidative stress in the intestine, accompanied by increased …
Effects Of Supplementing Beef Cows With Lipid From Whole Corn Germ, Jeremy Martin, Richard J. Rasby, Dennis R. Brink, Ron Lindquist, Duane Keisler, Stephen D. Kachman, Mark Dragastin
Effects Of Supplementing Beef Cows With Lipid From Whole Corn Germ, Jeremy Martin, Richard J. Rasby, Dennis R. Brink, Ron Lindquist, Duane Keisler, Stephen D. Kachman, Mark Dragastin
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
A two-year study was conducted with crossbred beef cows to determine whether supplementation with fat from whole corn germ either pre- or postpartum influenced ovarian activity before the breeding season, pregnancy rates, calving interval, calf performance, or serum leptin concentration. Supplements were fed for approximately 45 days before or 45 days after calving. Cows supplemented prepartum with fat from whole corn germ had shorter calving intervals. Ovarian activity before the breeding season, pregnancy rate, calf growth, and serum leptin were not different between groups.

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
A commercial feedlot experiment was conducted using 1,807 heifers to evaluate the effects of Optaflexx fed in combination with MGA on finishing heifer performance. In heifers receiving MGA throughout the entire 126-143 day feeding period, feeding Optaflexx for the last 31-38 days increased ADG and hot carcass weight compared to heifers fed MGA but not Optaflexx. Heifers fed MGA and Optaflexx had increased DMI, improved feed efficiency and increased final live weight. Carcass quality measurements were not influenced by treatment.

Assessing Legal Responses To Prenatal Drug Use: Can Therapeutic Responses Produce More Positive Outcomes Than Punitive Responses, Elizabeth E. Coleman, Monica K. Miller
Assessing Legal Responses To Prenatal Drug Use: Can Therapeutic Responses Produce More Positive Outcomes Than Punitive Responses, Elizabeth E. Coleman, Monica K. Miller
Journal of Law and Health
Expressing a growing concern for fetal well being, the 2006 Idaho Senate passed legislation that permits criminal charges to be brought against women who abuse illegal drugs while pregnant. This bill allows for the potential incarceration of violators for up to five years, as well as a possible $50,000 fine. In some locations, women have the option of choosing to go to drug court instead of serving time in jail or prison. These drug courts provide drug treatment, case management, drug testing, and supervision, while requiring women who abuse illegal drugs to regularly report to scheduled status hearings before a …
Sourcing Of Corporate Print: Three Case Studies, Patricia Sorce
Sourcing Of Corporate Print: Three Case Studies, Patricia Sorce
Books
Three case studies were conducted to understand the factors that impact the demand for outsourced commercial printing by corporations. The cases included one university, one large retailer, and one food packager. For Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), the purchase of a new offset press by the in-plant print shop resulted in a substantial increase in 2003 revenues, primarily through internal charge-backs. Many four-color jobs that formerly had been outsourced to external print services providers were able to be printed internally. One of the primary customers of the in-plant print shop is the Admissions Office. Their budget for printed recruitment materials …

The Moiwana Village Case, Claudia Martin
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
Moiwana Village is the second case to be decided by the Inter-American Court on Human Rights against Suriname in which the victims are members of an ethnic community that descends from'Bush Negroes' or 'Maroons', namely escaped former slaves who established new autonomous communities in the eastern part of Suriname. In contrast to its prior judgment, in Moiwana the Court shows a striking evolution in its case law regarding the treatment of ethnic or group rights. This approach, which may be traced back to previous case law on the rights of indigenous communities, affords an enhanced protection to members of an …
Market Power And Competitive Analysis Of China's Soybean Import Market, Baohui Song
Market Power And Competitive Analysis Of China's Soybean Import Market, Baohui Song
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Globally, China is the number one soybean importer, and the United States, Brazil, and Argentina are the top three soybean exporters. This research, based on the reverse residual demand model, developed and estimated a two-country partial equilibrium trade model to test who has stronger market power in the Chinese soybean import market. This two-country partial equilibrium trade model incorporates the U.S. residual soybean supply for China, the Chinese residual demand for U.S. soybeans, and the equilibrium condition, where the U.S. residual soybean supply equals the Chinese residual soybean demand. Data used in this research are monthly data from January 1999 …
Weight Management In Post-Menopausal Women: A Mixed-Methods Approach, Jennifer Leigh Gatz
Weight Management In Post-Menopausal Women: A Mixed-Methods Approach, Jennifer Leigh Gatz
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
The percentage of obese adults in the U.S. has more than doubled since the late 1970.s. A large percentage of adults, especially women, are trying to lose weight at any given time. Although recommended weight-loss strategies combine reduced caloric intake with physical activity, the actual strategies used can vary. This dissertation uses a mixed-methods approach to investigate weight, weight loss, and body image in post-menopausal women ages 50 to 64. Quantitative data were analyzed from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and semi-structured interviews with 81 women in Kentucky. Qualitative data was gathered from in-depth interviews with eight …
The Right To Food: Holding Global Actors Accountable Under International Law, Smita Narula
The Right To Food: Holding Global Actors Accountable Under International Law, Smita Narula
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
Economic globalization represents both an unmet opportunity and a significant challenge for the fulfillment of social and economic rights, including the right to food. While corporate sector accountability and the responsibility of international financial institutions (IFIs) to ensure social and economic rights are now at the forefront of the globalization discourse, greater attention must be paid to how these actors can be held accountable under international law. The existing human rights legal framework is ill-equipped to deal with violations committed by non-state actors, such as transnational corporations (TNCs), and multi-state actors, such as IFIs. Using the right to food as …

Effects Of Pre- And Postpartum Nutrition On Reproduction In Spring Calving Cows And Calf Feedlot Performance, Leslie Aaron Stalker, Don C. Adams, Richard N. Funston, Terry J. Klopfenstein
Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports
Crossbred, spring calving cows were used in a three-year experiment to evaluate the influence of supplemental protein prepartum and grazing sub-irrigated meadow postpartum on pregnancy rates and calf feedlot performance. Feeding supplement prepartum improved body condition score pre-calving and pre-breeding and increased the percentage of live calves at weaning but did not affect pregnancy rate or steer calf feedlot performance. Grazing sub-irrigated meadow did not change pregnancy rates or feedlot performance.
