Professors As Architects Of Student Learning, Antonio Cortes
Professors As Architects Of Student Learning, Antonio Cortes
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
The famous French aviator, Antoine de Saint-Exupery, commented about leadership by saying, "If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people together to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the sea." In a similar fashion, as leaders of learning, professors should follow the precepts of educational psychology to inspire students to deeply learn the course material. A student who is made passionate about learning a topic will fill his or her own bucket with greater expedience and efficiency than any professor can. This is a testament to the …

Kroc IPJ Research and Resources
Women on the frontline of efforts to end violence and secure a just peace seldom record their experiences, activities and insights – as generally there is no time or, perhaps, they do not have formal education that would help them record their stories. The Women PeaceMakers Program is a selective program for leaders who want to document, share and build upon their unique peacemaking stories. Selected peacemakers join the IPJ for an eight-week residency.
Women PeaceMakers are paired with a Peace Writer to document in written form their story of living in conflict and building peace in their communities and …

Using Student Generated Qualitative Ecological Models, J. Scott Blackwood, Marion Dresner, Hang-Kwang Luh
Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
In this activity, students construct qualitative models of an ecosystem and use the models to gain a better understanding of direct and indirect ecological interactions. Qualitative modeling is described for use in two procedures, each with different educational goals and student backgrounds in mind. Part 1 is designed with the non-major or beginning ecology student in mind, and is intended both to improve student understanding of the ecosystem of interest and to provide a framework for the instructor to assess student learning. Part 2 is designed for more advanced students of ecology and involves the use of modeling software (POWERPLAY) …

This Horizons program report describes the status of pediatric HIV treatment in selected sites in South Africa, identifies gaps in service delivery, and proposes recommendations for strengthening services and expanding children’s access to treatment. The study provides much needed information on critical issues of pediatric HIV care, especially regarding health service and contextual issues surrounding the expansion of access to treatment for HIV-infected children, and key factors that facilitate sustainability of treatment by young children. The aims of the study were to identify successful program strategies in pediatric HIV treatment in South Africa and to determine priority knowledge gaps to …
Nitrapyrin (N-Serve) With Anhydrous Ammonia At/Near Corn Planting, John H. Grove
Nitrapyrin (N-Serve) With Anhydrous Ammonia At/Near Corn Planting, John H. Grove
Agronomy Notes
Higher prices for energy are driving corn fertilizer nitrogen (N) prices higher as well. This increases interest in alternative management practices and products that optimize corn’s N nutrition, but maintain grower profit. Alternatives permitting fertilizer N rate reductions include: a) changes in N application timing and placement; b) using alternative sources of N (ex. poultry litter) to meet part of corn’s N need; and c) using fertilizer N additives that improve N use efficiency by inhibiting one or more N loss processes in the soil N cycle (biological N transformations).

This article, published in the Fordham Urban Law Journal, recommends that land use and housing policies be marshaled to reduce residential racial segregation and concentrated poverty. Such policies should be statewide, or at least regional, in scope. Isolated policies encourage leap-frog development that in turn promotes both sprawl and racial segregation. It also argues that state legislatures must adopt coordinated policy approaches, using Oregon’s comprehensive land use legislation as an example of policies that effectively promote affordable housing and decrease urban sprawl.

This book integrates research into applications that extend from preschool brain development to the memory of adult educators. In layman's terms, it provides explanations and answers to questions such as: Why do children have to read fast before they can understand what they read? How do health, nutrition, and stimulation influence brain development? Why should students learn basic skills in their maternal language? Is there such a thing as an untrained teacher? What signs in a classroom show whether students are getting a quality education? How must information be presented in class so that students can retain it and use …

The human gut is known to be a reservoir of a wide variety of microbes, including viruses. Many RNA viruses are known to be associated with gastroenteritis; however, the enteric RNA viral community present in healthy humans has not been described. Here, we present a comparative metagenomic analysis of the RNA viruses found in three fecal samples from two healthy human individuals. For this study, uncultured viruses were concentrated by tangential flow filtration, and viral RNA was extracted and cloned into shotgun viral cDNA libraries for sequencing analysis. The vast majority of the 36,769 viral sequences obtained were similar to …

Human Rights And The Roles Of Social Scientists, Moncada, Judith Blau
Human Rights And The Roles Of Social Scientists, Moncada, Judith Blau
Societies Without Borders
Human rights entail an expansive conception of humans that stresses their inherent equalities, their responsibilities in democratic societies, and their rights as individuals and group members. This paper refers to the "human rights revolution," especially how it is evident in constitutions, and the relationship between human rights and public goods. Also sketched out are some of the ways that social scientists can promote human rights.

Pollen Concentration Analysis Of Ancestral Pueblo Dietary Variation, Karl J. Reinhard, Sherrian Edwards, Teyona R. Damon, Debra K. Meier
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Previous coprolite research on the Colorado Plateau has shown that macrofossils are a useful way of statistically demonstrating prehistoric dietary variation of Ancestral Pueblos (Anasazi). Up until now, pollen concentration from human coprolites has not been used for comparative, statistical study. We present here the statistical analysis of pollen concentration values of coprolites from two Ancestral Pueblo sites, Salmon Ruin and Antelope House. The data show that although most pollen types do not show statistically significant variation, there are some types that show how different Ancestral Pueblo populations adapted to plant resources in different environments. The analysis indicates that future …

Success In Identification Of Experimentally Fragmented Limb Bone Shafts: Implications For Estimates Of Skeletal Element Abundance In Archaeofaunas, Travis Rayne Pickering, Charles P. Egeland, Amy G. Schnell, Daniel L. Osborne, Jake Enk
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
A strong pattern of high hindlimb representation (especially tibiae) was recognized in our survey of zooarchaeological analyses that included limb bone shafts in estimates of element abundance in assemblages from the Old and New Worlds, from widely spread time periods and with various hominid species that acted as bone accumulators. Inter-element differences in bone mineral density and carcass transport behavior by hominids do not explain the pattern satisfactorily. We hypothesized that shaft fragments of hindlimb elements (especially tibiae) might be more “intrinsically identifiable” than are fragments from other limb bones, and constructed an experiment to test this idea. Whole limb …

Wet Corn Gluten Feed And Alfalfa Hay Levels In Dry-Rolled Corn Finishing Diets: Effects On Finishing Performance And Feedlot Nitrogen Mass Balance, T. B. Farran, Galen E. Erickson, Terry Klopfenstein, C. N. Macken, R. Lindquist
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
One-hundred ninety-two crossbred steers (initial BW= 351 ± 11 kg) were used to determine the effects of removing alfalfa hay (AH) from dry-rolled corn-based diets containing wet corn gluten feed (WCGF) on animal performance and nutrient (N and OM) mass balance in open feedlot pens. Steers were stratified by weight and assigned randomly to 24 pens (2 × 3 factorial) and fed for 132 d from June to October 2002. Experimental diets contained either 0 or 35% WCGF and 0, 3.75, or 7.5% AH, and were formulated to be isonitrogenous. For efficiency of gain, an interaction occurred (P = 0.09) …

Evaluation Of Average Daily Gain Prediction By Level One Of The 1996 National Research Council Beef Model And Development Of Net Energy Adjusters, H. C. Block, Terry Klopfenstein, Galen E. Erickson
Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
Two data sets were developed to evaluate and refine feed energy predictions with the beef National Research Council (NRC, 1996) model level 1. The first data set included pen means of group-fed cattle from 31 growing trials (201 observations) and 17 finishing trials (154 observations) representing over 7,700 animals fed outside in dirt lots. The second data set consisted of 15 studies with individually fed cattle (916 observations) fed in a barn. In each data set, actual ADG was compared with ADG predicted with the NRC model level 1, assuming thermoneutral environmental conditions. Next, the observed ADG (kg), TDN intake …
