Linking Natural Resource Exploitation And Primary Health Care In Developing Countries, Alexandros Zervos
Linking Natural Resource Exploitation And Primary Health Care In Developing Countries, Alexandros Zervos
ExpressO
In exchange for loans from international financial institutions, natural resources companies should be made contractually responsible for achieving specific primary health care targets in certain developing countries they invest in. Primary health care is crucial for social/economic development, but many developing countries’ governments fail in its provision. Any effort to make natural resources companies responsible for primary health care would need to focus on goal setting, monitoring and legal enforcement. The latter would include both monetary sanctions and incentives tied to specific targets. The challenges facing this project are significant, but none are problematic enough to prevent its implementation.

Effects Of Sapk/Jnk Inhibitors On Preimplantation Mouse Embryo Development Are Influenced Greatly By The Amount Of Stress Induced By The Media, Yufen Xie, E. E. Puscheck, D. A. Rappolee
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Research Publications
Stress-activated protein kinase/c-Jun kinase (SAPK/JNK) is thought to be necessary for preimplantation embryonic development (Maekawa et al., 2005). However, media increases SAPK/JNK phosphorylation and these levels negatively correlate with embryonic development (Wang et al., 2005). Culture-induced stress could confuse analysis of the role of SAPK in development. In this study, we tested how SAPK/JNK inhibitors influence embryonic development in optimal and non-optimal media and define the contribution of cell survival and proliferation to the embryonic response to these media. SAPK/JNK inhibitors retard embryonic development in suboptimal Ham’s F10, but improve development in optimal potassium (K+) simplex optimized media (KSOM) +AA. …

A Feminist Perspective On The Precautionary Principle And The Problem Of Endocrine Disruptors Under Neoliberal Globalization Policies, Erica Hesch Anstey
A Feminist Perspective On The Precautionary Principle And The Problem Of Endocrine Disruptors Under Neoliberal Globalization Policies, Erica Hesch Anstey
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Industrialization and "development" during the last 200 years have led to an increase of pesticides, an intensified use of synthetic chemicals, higher levels of environmental pollution, and more exposure to hazardous working conditions. Environmental toxins, many of which are endocrine disruptors, are stored in fat tissue, increasing reproductive health risks for both women and men. Women’s bodies are particularly vulnerable as sites for creating, growing, feeding, and nurturing the next generation. And yet, women’s lives are consistently devalued, especially in a capitalist economy, so that a woman’s rights to her own reproductive health are no longer guaranteed.

Assessment Of Image Analysis As A Measure Of Scleractinian Coral Growth, Steven K. Gustafson
Assessment Of Image Analysis As A Measure Of Scleractinian Coral Growth, Steven K. Gustafson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Image analysis was used to measure basal areas of selected colonies of Montastraea annularis and Porites astreoides, following the colonies over a three-year period from 2002 to 2004. Existing digital images of permanently-marked quadrats in the Caye Caulker Marine Reserve, Belize, were selected based on image quality and availability of images of selected quadrats for all three years. Annual growth rates were calculated from the basal-area measurements. Mean growth rates (radial skeletal extension) for M. annularis and P. astreoides were 0.02 cm yr-1 and -0.20 cm yr-1, respectively. Basal area measurements demonstrated a large degree of variability. Increases were approximately …

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by a high blood glucose concentration (hyperglycemia ) which is due to insulin deficiency and / or insulin resistance . As a consequence of the metabolic derangements various complications develop , so the aim of this investigation is to study(histological ) the role of cinnamon – oil on the testis tissue of alloxan – induced diabetes rat . METHODS AND METHODS : Forty -six male rats were used and divided into 3 groups : group I , 6 = animal control . group II , 20 = treated with alloxan …

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: VSD is the most common cardiac malformation accounting for 25% of congenital heart disease. The VSDs are classified according to its haemodynamic effect into small, moderate and large. The VSD can affect the growth, which is defined as a progressive increase in size of the body as a whole or of its separate parts and can result in failure to thrive in affected patients. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study was done to demonstrate the effects of the VSD on weight, height and occiptofrontal circumference (OFC) of children as parameters of growth. METHODS: This is a prospective study …

ABSTRACT: BACK GROUND : Herbal remedies are used in induction of lactation . In view of that ,Borage Officinalis was employed to ensure an abundant milk supply or rectify milk insufficiency .However ,this remedy has not been scientifically tested . METHODS: The animals were treated with the aqueous extract of Borage Officinalis flowers at a daily concentration of 100 mg / kg body weight /ml for each rat through Oro-gastric tube for 14 days . Animals were subdivided into subgroups according to their physiological status . Mammary glands of these animals were processed for histological , histochemical and immunohistochemical studies …

Guinea Pigs: A Suitable Animal Model To Study Lipoprotein Metabolism, Atherosclerosis And Inflammation, Maria Luz Fernandez, Jeff S Volek
Nutrition Articles
Numerous animal models have been used to study diet effects on cholesterol and lipoprotein metabolism. However, most of those models differ from humans in the plasma distribution of cholesterol and in the processing of lipoproteins in the plasma compartment. Although transgenic or knock-out mice have been used to study a specific pathway involved in cholesterol metabolism, these data are of limited use because other metabolic pathways and responses to interventions may differ from the human condition.Carbohydrate restricted diets have been shown to reduce plasma triglycerides, increase HDL cholesterol and promote the formation of larger, less atherogenic LDL. However, the mechanisms …

Summer Programming: What Do Children Say?, Nila Cobb, Stacey Harper, Kerri Mccormick, Kimary Mcneil
Journal of Youth Development
Studies document that low-income children lose academic skills over the summer. Six years of reading achievement data collected by Energy Express, a nationally recognized summer reading and nutrition program in West Virginia, has established the efficacy of the intervention. The purpose of this study was to examine characteristics of a voluntary summer program that foster participation. Interview data indicates that children attend because they perceive the program as fun; large creative art (for example, full-body portraits, appliance box castles, wall murals) seems particularly important. Energy Express gives children both the fun they want and the enrichment they need in the …

Homeless Mothers' Perceptions Of Parenting In Shelters, Sarah E. Young Whitaker Dnsc, Msn, Rn
Dissertations
Descriptions of parenting in a homeless shelter were obtained from nine single mothers housed in one of two shelters in a major southwestern border metroplex. Case study methodology was used to obtain their perspectives on parenting in this unique context. Content analysis was used to organize and analyze emerging themes. Major themes that emerged from the study were (a) a lack of autonomy, (b) gaining access to material resources, (c) lack of privacy, (d) constant change and insecurity in the environment, (e) differing values, and (e) psychosocial support.
