Summer Programming: What Do Children Say?, Nila Cobb, Stacey Harper, Kerri Mccormick, Kimary Mcneil
Summer Programming: What Do Children Say?, Nila Cobb, Stacey Harper, Kerri Mccormick, Kimary Mcneil
Journal of Youth Development
Studies document that low-income children lose academic skills over the summer. Six years of reading achievement data collected by Energy Express, a nationally recognized summer reading and nutrition program in West Virginia, has established the efficacy of the intervention. The purpose of this study was to examine characteristics of a voluntary summer program that foster participation. Interview data indicates that children attend because they perceive the program as fun; large creative art (for example, full-body portraits, appliance box castles, wall murals) seems particularly important. Energy Express gives children both the fun they want and the enrichment they need in the …

A Conceptual Plan For The Detroit Book And Tower Building: Exploration Of The Conjunction Of Historic Preservation And Sustainable Design Concepts, Chi-Ying Luo
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This conceptual project generated an adaptive reuse proposal for the Book and Tower Building in a registered historic district. Louis Kamper designed the thirteen-story Book Building in 1917, in the Beaux Arts style, to create elite shops and offices. In 1926 the thirty-six-story Tower Building extended the leaseable space. This proposal preserved and rehabilitated the historic features in the lobby area and renovated the retail spaces. An Asian Café was designed to contrast, but blend with, the Beaux Arts style. The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation were followed in the lobby area so as to make the renovation …

The Black-White Achievement Gap: Do State Policies Matter?, Henry I. Braun, Aubrey Wang, Frank Jenkins, Elliot Weinbaum
The Black-White Achievement Gap: Do State Policies Matter?, Henry I. Braun, Aubrey Wang, Frank Jenkins, Elliot Weinbaum
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
A longstanding issue in American education is the gap in academic achievement between majority and minority students. The goal of this study is to accumulate and evaluate evidence on the relationship between state education policies and changes in the Black-White achievement gap, while addressing some of the methodological issues that have led to differences in interpretations of earlier findings. To that end, we consider the experiences of ten states that together enroll more than forty percent of the nation's Black students. We estimate the trajectories of Black student and White student achievement on the NAEP 8th grade mathematics assessment over …

The Three Faces Of Retainer Care, Frank A. Pasquale
The Three Faces Of Retainer Care, Frank A. Pasquale
ExpressO
Retainer care arrangements allow patients to pay a fee directly to a physician’s office in order to obtain special access to care. Practices usually convert to retainer status by concentrating their attention on a small panel and dropping the majority of their patients. Proponents call retainer care a triumph of consumer-directed health care; opponents deride it as “boutique medicine.” Both sides are deploying a variety of legal tactics in order to attain their goals.
After surveying these conflicts, this article clarifies what is at stake by analyzing the three key features of retainer care: preventive care, queue-jumping, and amenity-bundling. Most …
Semiparametric Analysis For Correlated Recurrent And Terminal Events, Yining Ye, Jack Kalbfleisch, Doug E. Schaubel
Semiparametric Analysis For Correlated Recurrent And Terminal Events, Yining Ye, Jack Kalbfleisch, Doug E. Schaubel
The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
In clinical and observational studies, recurrent event data (e.g. hospitalization) with a terminal event (e.g. death) are often encountered. In many instances, the terminal event is strongly correlated with the recurrent event process. In this article, we propose a semiparametric method to jointly model the recurrent and terminal event processes. The dependence is modeled by a shared gamma frailty that is included in both the recurrent event rate and terminal event hazard function. Marginal models are used to estimate the regression effects on the terminal and recurrent event processes and a Poisson model is used to estimate the dispersion of …

Adjusting For Covariate Effects On Classification Accuracy Using The Covariate-Adjusted Roc Curve, Holly Janes, Margaret S. Pepe
Adjusting For Covariate Effects On Classification Accuracy Using The Covariate-Adjusted Roc Curve, Holly Janes, Margaret S. Pepe
UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Recent scientific and technological innovations have produced an abundance of potential markers which are being investigated for their use in disease screen- ing and diagnosis. In evaluating these markers, it is often necessary to account for covariates which are associated with the marker of interest. These covariates may include subject characteristics, expertise of the test operator, test proce- dures, or aspects of specimen handling. In this paper, we propose the AROC, a covariate-adjusted measure of the classification accuracy. The AROC is the common covariate-specific ROC curve, when the covariate does not affect dis- crimination, and a weighted average of covariate-specific …

An Experimental Study Of The Effects Of Remote Intercessory Prayer On Depression, Jason Gary Wright
An Experimental Study Of The Effects Of Remote Intercessory Prayer On Depression, Jason Gary Wright
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The present study utilized a double-blind, controlled, pre-test/post-test design to examine the effect of remote intercessory prayer on 20 participants who received counseling for depression in various clinics throughout central Virginia. The researcher randomly drew from a pool of 20 numbers; participants given even numbers were assigned to the experimental group and were prayed for by assigned intercessors for 28 days. Participants given odd numbers were assigned to the control group and were not assigned intercessors. Twenty-eight days (or as soon a possible) after all participants took the first BDI-II (Beck Depression Inventory, second version) they completed the BDI-II for …

Association Between Tobacco Use And Body Mass Index In Urban Indian Population: Implications For Public Health In India, Mangesh S. Pednekar, Prakash C. Gupta, Heema C. Shukla, James R. Hébert
Association Between Tobacco Use And Body Mass Index In Urban Indian Population: Implications For Public Health In India, Mangesh S. Pednekar, Prakash C. Gupta, Heema C. Shukla, James R. Hébert
Faculty Publications
Background: Body mass index [BMI, weight (kg)/height (m2)], a measure of relative weight, is a good overall indicator of nutritional status and predictor of overall health. As in many developing countries, the high prevalence of very low BMIs in India represents an important public health risk. Tobacco, smoked in the form of cigarettes or bidis (handmade by rolling a dried rectangular piece of temburni leaf with 0.15–0.25 g of tobacco) or chewed, is another important determinant of health. Tobacco use also may exert a strong influence on BMI.
Methods: The relationship between very low BMI (< 18.5 kg/m2) and tobacco use was examined using data from a representative cross-sectional survey of 99,598 adults (40,071 men and 59,527 women) carried out in the city of Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay) in western India. Participants were men and women aged ≥ 35 years who were residents of the main city of Mumbai.
