BACKGROUND: Candida auris (also referred to as Candidozyma auris) is an emerging multidrug-resistant fungal pathogen associated with high morbidity and mortality. Existing infection prevention and control (IPC) guidance has largely focused on adult populations, with limited recommendations for pediatric healthcare and non-healthcare settings.

METHODS: The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) convened a multidisciplinary expert panel to develop IPC recommendations for C. auris. The panel developed recommendations using a structured, iterative Delphi consensus process with rounds of discussion, refinement, and anonymous electronic voting with predefined consensus thresholds. Panelists reviewed relevant peer-reviewed and gray literature integrated with expert …

Retrospective Chart Review Of Immobilized Lipase Cartridge Use In Children With Short Bowel Syndrome., Elizaveta Khenner, Jennifer Morton, Laura Green, Ashlee Yoder, Kayla Paul, Ann E. Remmers, William San Pablo

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

This retrospective, single-center chart review studied the use of an in-line, immobilized lipase cartridge (ILC) in children with short bowel syndrome (SBS) at Children's Mercy Hospital. For parenteral nutrition (PN)-dependent patients, the primary endpoint was enteral feeding progression, evaluated by comparing monthly change from baseline in PN and enteral nutrition (EN) after the start of ILC use. For patients with enteral autonomy, changes from baseline in growth measure z-scores were evaluated. In 9 PN-dependent patients (with Type II or III SBS), mean PN use decreased 10.6 kcal/kg/day (15.5%) and mean EN use increased by 6.0 kcal/kg/day (39.9%) after 3.8 to …

Incidental Colorectal Adenomas In Adolescents: Clinical Management, Genetic Evaluation, And Surveillance., Brett J. Hoskins, Shlomi Cohen, Colleen B. Flahive, Isabel Rojas, Aparajita Singh, Thomas M. Attard Jun 2026

Incidental Colorectal Adenomas In Adolescents: Clinical Management, Genetic Evaluation, And Surveillance., Brett J. Hoskins, Shlomi Cohen, Colleen B. Flahive, Isabel Rojas, Aparajita Singh, Thomas M. Attard

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

The rising incidence of early-onset colorectal cancer has renewed attention to colorectal adenomas in adolescents and young adults (AYA), although these lesions remain rare and poorly characterized in adolescents. Lack of age-specific guidance creates uncertainty regarding genetic evaluation, surveillance intervals, and long-term management when these lesions are identified in adolescents. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence and expert perspective on epidemiology, evaluation, endoscopic management, surveillance, genetic considerations, and psychosocial implications of incidentally identified colorectal adenomas across the AYA spectrum, with emphasis on adolescents as a distinct clinical population. Available data largely derive from adults aged 20-49 years but suggest that …

The Effects Of Bone Health And Variation On Saw Mark Signatures, Lily Ambrose Jun 2026

The Effects Of Bone Health And Variation On Saw Mark Signatures, Lily Ambrose

PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship

Bone health and structural variation are multifactorial. Population, environment, age, diet, and health influence the overall functional morphology of bone and its response to stressors. Reduced cortical porosity, trabecular thinning, and low bone mass are common indicators of age-related and pathological changes, affecting a significant portion of the population. Because of this, bones encountered in medicolegal investigations often differ from what is considered “normal.” The structural integrity of bone needs to be considered because density influences mechanical strength and response to external forces. In criminal dismemberment cases, forensic scientists analyze saw marks to identify tool class and reconstruct events. While …

Disclosure Duties And Responsibilities, Gregory Klass Jun 2026

Disclosure Duties And Responsibilities, Gregory Klass

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Contract disclosure rules differ in structure, function, and design. Though scholars often treat all these rules under the rubric of duty, in fact they fall into two broad categories. Disclosure duties treat the failure to disclose as a legal wrong; disclosure responsibilities attach positive legal consequences to disclosure but do not treat nondisclosure as a legal wrong. Disclosure duties can be further divided. Specified disclosure duties, which typically apply to consumer and other mass-market transactions, provide detailed guidance regarding both what information to disclose and how to disclose it. Generic disclosure duties, such as the tort of nondisclosure, provide broad …

Within cells, across diverse organisms, macromolecular condensation enables spatial and temporal organization of biochemical reactions by organizing proteins and nucleic acids into compositionally distinct membraneless biomolecular condensates. In the gut bacterium Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, condensate formation by the transcription termination factor Rho (BtRho) increases its termination activity and promotes B. thetaiotaomicron fitness in the mammalian gut. Here, we elucidate the molecular mechanism governing carbon starvation-induced BtRho phase separation. We establish that short, specific amino acid sequences within BtRho's intrinsically disordered region (IDR) control BtRho condensation via complex coacervation. The identified sequences participate in RNA and intra-IDR regulatory interactions that drive condensate …

Alcohol Consumption And Molecular Subtypes Of Colorectal Cancer: Pooled Observational And Mendelian Randomization Analyses, Christos V Chalitsios, Yin Cao, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption is associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) risk, yet its association with distinct molecular subtypes remains unclear. Clarifying this could reveal insights into alcohol's carcinogenic mechanisms.

OBJECTIVES: We examined the association between alcohol consumption and the risk of CRC subtypes defined by individual tumor markers (and marker combinations), namely microsatellite instability (MSI) status, CpG island methylator phenotype (CIMP) status, BRAF, and KRAS mutations.

METHODS: Pooled observational (n

RESULTS: Among drinkers, each additional 14 g/d of alcohol was associated with a 10% higher CRC risk [odds ratio (OR) = 1.10; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.07, 1.13], but this association …

U.S. Regulation And Litigation Regarding Gmos: A Cautionary Tale Of A Piecemeal Framework, Michael R. Reese, George V. Granade

Northern Illinois University Law Review

Bioengineered crops using genetically modified organisms (GMOs or GM) are big business in the United States. In little more than two decades, GM agriculture constitutes more than 90% of crops such as corn, soy, and canola. The acceptance of GMO foods by consumers, however, has not been as robust—leading to demand for labeling regulations so consumers can identify whether their foods contain GMOs. U.S. law governing GMOs, particularly food labeling, lacks a comprehensive regulatory scheme and is instead highly fragmented. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has debated how to label such foods for over a decade, issuing no rules …

Ig–Microbiota Binding Patterns In Mothers And Infants: A Scoping Review, Alicia Tan Yi Jia, Christopher S. Peacock, Danielle E. Dye, Claus T. Christophersen

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Studies characterising the immunoglobulin (Ig)-bound microbiota apply varying methodologies, making comparisons difficult. This scoping review synthesised evidence on Ig–microbiota binding patterns in maternal and infant contexts, identified recurrent Ig-bound and -unbound bacteria across studies, and highlighted knowledge gaps for further study. Nine articles investigating Ig–microbiota binding patterns in stool or breastmilk samples in mothers or infants were included. Ig–microbiota associations were influenced by sample type, Ig-subclass, genetics, and diet. The most important antibody was IgA, with partial functional redundancy with IgM, while IgG appeared more selective for pathobionts. Ig-bound taxa in early life included important commensals and pathobionts, with high …

An Obligatory Role For Agrp Neurons In Maintaining Body Temperature During Time-Restricted Feeding, Cunjin Su, Jing Cai, Yuanzhong Xu, Benjamin R Arenkiel, Qingchun Tong

The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine

Homeotherms maintain a steady body temperature through thermoregulation, a process critical for survival during fasting, in which the brain has to defend energy-costly body temperature while reducing energy expenditure to conserve energy reserve; however, the neural basis for defending body temperature remains unclear. Here, we demonstrated that AgRP neuron lesion led to lethality during time-restricted feeding on chow but not on HFD, and caused no obvious impact on HFD-induced obesity or obesity-reducing responses to glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonism. The lesion disrupted adaptive feeding behaviors during time-restricted feeding and reduced motivational feeding on chow. Notably, the lethality was caused by hypothermia …
