African Americans' Views On Access To Healthy Foods: What A Farmers' Market Provides, Yolanda Suarez-Balcazar, Louise I. Martinez, Ginnefer Cox, Anita Jayraj

Journal of Extension

The study reported here assessed African Americans' perceptions of a local farmers' market and access to healthy produce in their community. The majority of respondents were satisfied with several dimensions of the farmers' market, including location, cleanliness, variety, price, and quality of produce. Comparing the farmers' market to the local stores in terms of access to fresh produce, about twice the number of residents was satisfied with the farmers' market than with the local stores. This study has implications for Extension in terms of promoting farmers' markets in low-income minority communities.

The Experiences Of Childbirth: Personal Stories Of Mam Women From Comitancillo, Guatemala, Kristina Cottrell

Senior Honors Theses

This phenomenological research study examines the attitudes and actions that surround the experience of childbearing among women in a Maya-Marn community of highland Guatemala. This area typifies the indigenous underprivileged population of Central America that has attracted international attention for poor maternal-child health outcomes and resistance to attempts at bio-medical interventions in obstetrics. Interviews were conducted among women with obstetrical experience wherein they described their traditional practices and attitudes towards modern medical care during childbirth. It was found that participants preferred traditional methods of care, but were willing to integrate bio-medical care into their realm of experience in the event …

Constructing One Component Of A Survey Instrument To Measure The Influence Of An Athletic Trainer's Worldview In His Decision Making Process, Daniel Preusser

Senior Honors Theses

Athletic trainers are often put in situations where they may be pressured to make morally compromising decisions regarding issues ranging from insurance fraud to substance abuse. The Athletic Training Department at Liberty University seeks to produce findings based on the results of a survey focusing on the role that an athletic trainer's worldview plays in these decision-making processes that shows a correlation between an individual's worldview and the types of decisions he makes. It is the goal of the Liberty University Athletic Training Program to determine how significant the effects of an athletic trainer's worldview would have on the decisions …

Should Corporate Farming Be Limited In The United States?: An Economic Perspective, Nathan Wittmaack Apr 2006

Should Corporate Farming Be Limited In The United States?: An Economic Perspective, Nathan Wittmaack

Major Themes in Economics

Farming in the United States has changed drastically over the last century. Technology has improved farmers’ ability to produce. Economies of scale available from new technology have led to restructuring in the agricultural industry. Fewer and larger farms are now the norm. As technology improved, corporations began to increase activity in agricultural sectors. Sectors such as livestock are more susceptible to corporate farming. Many Americans are opposed to corporate farming because of the perceived negative effects on rural America. Limiting corporate farming, though, is not a good way to protect rural America. Corporate farming leads to a more efficient industry …

The Effects Of Natural Disasters On Long Run Growth, Aaron Popp Apr 2006

The Effects Of Natural Disasters On Long Run Growth, Aaron Popp

Major Themes in Economics

This paper seeks to determine the relationship between natural disasters and long run growth. Natural disasters affect several important macroeconomic variables, most notably technology, that can increase or decrease economic growth. Recovery following disasters is important, and the institutions of a country help determine how the recovery progresses. Institutions also help determine the outcomes of some events, such as inflation, that could affect long run growth. Countries can help maximize the positive effects of natural disasters on growth by improving their response to disasters and preparing for the next disaster.

Sex-Education And Preventative And Contraceptive Services: Educação-Sexual E Serviços Contraceptivos E Preventativos, Elizabeth M. Ortiz

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Maternal morbidity is one of the leading causes of death amongst women in Latina America. Lack of access to Reproductive Health services has incited a continental epidemic amongst adolescent women - and should be considered a public health crisis. Yet, there is little being done by the governing male bodies to secure access and the Right to Reproductive Health services. This is not only a means of re-enforcing gendered inequalities- but also class, and racial disparities. Reproductive Health in Brazil and Northeastern Brazil in particular, serves as an allegory for socio-economic, gender, ethnic, and racial inequality in the region. The …

Soil Fertility And Changes In Fertilizer Use For Intensive Rice Cultivation In The Red River Delta And Mekong Delta Of Vietnam, Jennifer Soong Apr 2006

Soil Fertility And Changes In Fertilizer Use For Intensive Rice Cultivation In The Red River Delta And Mekong Delta Of Vietnam, Jennifer Soong

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Rice farmers in Vietnam’s Red River Delta and Mekong Delta are now fully addicted to using fertilizers to sustain intensive rice production. The introduction of high yielding rice varieties in the late 1960’s brought with it the ability to grow crops continuously throughout year, and the need to supplement natural soil conditions with both organic and inorganic fertilizers. Rice yields have increased rapidly in the past 40 years. If intensive agriculture is to continue producing the high yields that Vietnam has come to expect, however, proper management of fertilizer use must begin now. In this study, three intensive rice fields …

Synthesis Of Aspernigrin A, Erica Joerger Apr 2006

Synthesis Of Aspernigrin A, Erica Joerger

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Aspernigrin A is a compound correlated with inhibiting the growth of cancer cells in the colon. A five-step synthesis was designed for aspernigrin A, projected to yield four intermediates and the final product. The intermediates were analyzed by high field 1HNMR and FT-IR spectroscopy before proceeding to the next step. A model pyridone ring system was successfully prepared from a commercially available pyrone precursor in two steps. These results provide a proof of concept that the synthetic scheme should successfully yield the natural product.

So You Think It's Inclusion…Think Again: A Quantitative Analysis Of Stakeholder Perceptions In Community Youth Organizations, Mary Mcallister Shea Edd

Dissertations

Over the last thirty years, a cultural transformation has occurred in public schools as students with disabilities have slowly moved from segregated sites and special day classes to more inclusive classroom environments. Although this change has largely been driven by legislative mandate, including the requirement that students be supported in the least restrictive environment possible, the benefits of inclusion have been exceedingly well documented in the literature. Unfortunately, the inclusiveness seen within schools has not extended to the provision of out-of-school programs, and as a result, sixteen years after the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, children with disabilities …

The Impact Of Interactive Multimedia On Nutrition And Physical Activity Knowledge Of High School Students, Carolyn Dunn, Cathy Thomas, Claudia Green, Julie Mick

Journal of Extension

Creative ways to encourage adolescents to develop positive lifelong eating and physical activity patterns are needed. The project described here assessed the effectiveness of an interactive multimedia product, SyberShop, to increase knowledge and influence behavior change in nutrition and physical activity in adolescents. SyberShop was effective in increasing knowledge in students. Students using SyberShop scored 28% higher on a post-test compared to a control group receiving no nutrition education (p < 0.001) and 19% higher than a group of student receiving lectures. (p<0.05). Using multimedia is an effective way to educate young people about healthy eating and physical activity.

A Successful Collaborative Research Project: Determining The Effects Of Delayed Castration On Beef Cattle Production And Carcass Traits And Consumer Acceptability, Kevin Heaton, Dale R. Zobell, Daren Cornforth Apr 2006

A Successful Collaborative Research Project: Determining The Effects Of Delayed Castration On Beef Cattle Production And Carcass Traits And Consumer Acceptability, Kevin Heaton, Dale R. Zobell, Daren Cornforth

Journal of Extension

A cooperative, on-ranch study was conducted to determine the effect of time of castration on ADG, carcass characteristics, and consumer preference. Sixty-five bull calves were randomly assigned to three treatments: early castrates (E), weaned castrates (W) and late castrates (L). Results indicated no differences between treatments for ADG, backfat, ending live weight, hot carcass weight, or dressing percentage. Ribeye area and cutability were higher for the L, and marbling score and yield grade were lower for L. Consumer panelists who ate beef regularly identified E as more tender, juicy, and flavorful and had better overall acceptability than W or L.

The Good Governance Agenda Of International Development Institutions, Kerry L. Hofheimer Apr 2006

The Good Governance Agenda Of International Development Institutions, Kerry L. Hofheimer

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

International development institutions (IDIs) have increasingly emphasized good governance and democratic reform in the provision of foreign assistance. This is especially apparent with respect to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), World Bank, European Union (EU), and United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This project describes and explains the good governance and democracy promotion program of each institution.

Previous studies have accounted for IDIs' good governance and democracy promotion in the 1990s in a generalized way. They have taken into consideration external international changes such as the fading of the Cold War and increased global interdependence between the North …

A National Professional Development System For Youth Workers, Barbara Stone, Pam Garza, Lynne Borden Apr 2006

A National Professional Development System For Youth Workers, Barbara Stone, Pam Garza, Lynne Borden

Journal of Youth Development

A persistent challenge in the youth development field is the lack of a systemic approach to attracting, developing and sustaining its workforce, particularly direct service workers. While serious efforts to address workforce development have dotted the youth work landscape, especially over the last 15 years, much of this progress has been organization-specific rather than across the field or systemic (Quinn, 2004). In 2004, 30 individuals who were knowledgeable about the issues came together to address the challenge of attracting, developing and retaining youth workers. They represented diverse sectors of the field, including direct service workers, national youth-serving agencies, local and …

Interests And Expectations Of The Confederated Tribes Of The Umatilla Indian Reservation Regarding Hanford And Hanford-Affected Lands, Confederated Tribes Of Umatilla Indian Reservation

Confederated Tribes of Umatilla Indian Reservation

This document updates the previous document “Scoping Report: Nuclear Risks in Tribal Communities” prepared by Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR) in 1995. At the time, “no comprehensive or sitewide evaluation of risks and costs has been performed at Hanford.” A decade later, this is still true. It is also still true that “a full risk picture must include addressing the impacts over time.”

This report provides a more docused perspective on how to establish both technically and politically defensible environmental management approach in an era of continued fiscal constraints. This was true in 1995 and is even …
