Young People’S Perceptions Of What It Means To Be An Australian, Nola Purdie, Rhonda Craven Jan 2006

Young People’S Perceptions Of What It Means To Be An Australian, Nola Purdie, Rhonda Craven

Student learning processes

The question “What does it mean to be an Australian?” has significant implications for understanding factors contributing to social cohesion; explaining and promoting ourselves to others; imagining and shaping Australia’s future; and shaping civics curriculum. The purpose of this study was to identify key components of Australian national identity of a sample of Australians (N = 418) comprised of primary (N=71); secondary (N=146), Technical and Further Education (TAFE) (N=59) and University (n=142) students. Participants completed a written response to the question “What does it mean to be Australian?” Responses were analysed and coded by two coders using content analysis to …

Fueled By Technology Market Demand, Massachusetts Economic Growth Increases, Alan Clayton-Matthews Jan 2006

Fueled By Technology Market Demand, Massachusetts Economic Growth Increases, Alan Clayton-Matthews

Public Policy and Public Affairs Faculty Publication Series

The pace of economic growth in Massachusetts has picked up significantly, beginning in the fourth quarter of last year, reflecting improved worldwide markets for information technology equipment in the last half of 2005. This resurgence in technology markets helped reverse a deceleration in state economic growth that the state experienced between mid-2004 and the third quarter of 2005. The Massachusetts economy has performed better over the last six months than at any time since the current expansion began in the second quarter of 2003. The recent pace of expansion matched the long-term average growth in real gross state product of …

Modernist Success In A Postmodern Failure: Jackson Pollock And Abstract Expressionism, The Avant-Garde And The Ascension Of Late Capitalism, Art After 1945, Russell Gullette

Honors Theses

It is hard to imagine the magnitude of the events at the end of World War II. The thought produced in the face of a myriad of deaths is almost unfeasible sixty years after the fact, but the energy was integral to the changing social landscape. Because of the country's prominence in and fortitude after the war, the U.S. was left responsible for reshaping and rejuvenating the international landscape that was destroyed by the years of brutal fighting and vile contestation. The American establishment was granted a major opportunity to establish itself amongst the global leaders. Such a grand responsibility …

Topographies Of Home And Citizenship: Arab American Activists, Lynn A. Staeheli, Caroline R. Nagel Jan 2006

Topographies Of Home And Citizenship: Arab American Activists, Lynn A. Staeheli, Caroline R. Nagel

Faculty Publications

Home and citizenship carry contradictory and ambiguous meanings for immigrants as they negotiate lives ‘here’ and ‘there’. We use the concept of topography to analyze the ways in which activists in the Arab-American community draw connections between homes in the United States and in the Middle East. In intensive interviews, we ask activists about how their understanding of home influences their activism and positioning as citizens within the United States. Activists often bring to their work conceptualizations of home and citizenship that are open, and that connect home to broader forces operating at various scales and in more than one …

Cooperative Interval Caching In Clustered Multimedia Servers, Kim Tran Jan 2006

Cooperative Interval Caching In Clustered Multimedia Servers, Kim Tran

Master's Projects

In this project, we design a cooperative interval caching (CIC) algorithm for clustered video servers, and evaluate its performance through simulation. The CIC algorithm describes how distributed caches in the cluster cooperate to serve a given request. With CIC, a clustered server can accommodate twice (95%) more number of cached streams than the clustered server without cache cooperation. There are two major processes of CIC to find available cache space for a given request in the cluster: to find the server containing the information about the preceding request of the given request; and to find another server which may have …

This paper a contribution to a symposium on blogs and the law examines the legal and constitutional status of blogs Specifically it offers three ways of looking at the relationship between blogs and the Press Clause and not incidentally of looking at the Press Clause itselfFirst drawing on recent historical work I suggest that we might view the Press Clause through either the free press or open press models that historically have applied to that provision Viewing the Press Clause through the open press model makes a home for blogs in the Press Clause but dilutes the content of the …

The Roles Of Digital Libraries In Teaching And Learning Geography, Chew-Hung Chang, John Hedberg, Tiong-Sa Teh, Ee Peng Lim Jan 2006

The Roles Of Digital Libraries In Teaching And Learning Geography, Chew-Hung Chang, John Hedberg, Tiong-Sa Teh, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Adopting a problem-centred approach helps students to learn Geography more effectively as they are able to identify and generalize about where different resources or activities are spatially located and they learn to associate certain patterns and processes with geographical changes. In an era where web-based student-centred inquiry is gaining popularity as a mode of learning Geography, the role of digital libraries as delivery trucks (in Clark’s terminology, 1983) needs to be better understood. An obvious affordance of the digital library is that it organizes information around themes for problems to be solved. This paper describes a developmental project to build …

Predictors Of Self-Rated Health: A 12-Month Prospective Study Of It And Media Workers, Dan Hasson, Bengt B. Arnetz, Tã¶Res Theorell, Ulla Anderberg

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship

Abstract

Objective

The aim of the present study was to determine health-related risk and salutogenic factors and to use these to construct prediction models for future self-rated health (SRH), i.e. find possible characteristics predicting individuals improving or worsening in SRH over time (0–12 months).

Methods

A prospective study was conducted with measurements (physiological markers and self-ratings) at 0, 6 and 12 months, involving 303 employees (187 men and 116 women, age 23–64) from four information technology and two media companies.

Results

There were a multitude of statistically significant cross-sectional correlations (Spearman's Rho) between SRH and other self-ratings as well as …

From Communicative Silencer To Responsive Listener: Participation And Public Dialogue In Benin, André Quenum Jan 2006

From Communicative Silencer To Responsive Listener: Participation And Public Dialogue In Benin, André Quenum

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The interpretation explores the issue of participatory communication within the particular Beninese context of public dialogue by focusing on the communicative praxis of intellectual elite and by taking the public dialogue of the 1990 National Conference of Benin as a case study. The interpretive listening of such a situated participatory public dialogue results in the framing of two major metaphors: communicative silencer and responsive listener. First, the interpretation unveils that the possibility of broad participation in the democratization of Benin is compromised by a culture of silence in which intellectual elite become communicative silencers of the silenced communities including the …

Control, Co-Optation And Co-Operation: Managing Religious Harmony In Singapore's Multi-Ethnic, Quasi-Secular State, Li-Ann Thio Jan 2006

Control, Co-Optation And Co-Operation: Managing Religious Harmony In Singapore's Multi-Ethnic, Quasi-Secular State, Li-Ann Thio

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

The governors of a multi-ethnic, multi-religious state which is based on political authority derived from secular laws, rather than theocratic mandate, are aware of the paradoxical quality of Religion as a force for peace and conflict. Indeed, the root word re (to bind) legare (what is broken) suggests that Religion is something which is redemptive in its healing quality. However, pragmatism informed by history reveals the need to maintain ethnic and religious cohesion as religious conflicts can tear plural societies apart. Religion is too potent a force to disregard or attempt to coercively eliminate, in a manner reminiscent of totalitarian …

What Nsa Is Doing... And Why It's Illegal, John Cary Sims

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

On December 16, 2005, The New York Times disclosed the existence of a secret electronic surveillance program being carried out by the National Security Agency (NSA) that involves government interception of the contents of international communications without obtaining warrants. The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 (FISA), which was enacted following the Supreme Court's decision in United States v. United States District Court (1972) and the Church Committee's disclosure of improper NSA activities, created a comprehensive system regulating electronic surveillance for foreign intelligence purposes. Warrants are required when such surveillance takes place within the United States or when it targets …

Densities Of Fecal Indicator Bacteria In Tidal Waters Of The Ballona Wetlands, Los Angeles County, California, John H. Dorsey Jan 2006

Densities Of Fecal Indicator Bacteria In Tidal Waters Of The Ballona Wetlands, Los Angeles County, California, John H. Dorsey

Center for Urban Resilience Scholarship

Densities of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) represented by total coliforms, E. coli and enterococci were measured within tidal channels of the Ballona Wetlands (Los Angeles County) to see if the wetlands act as a sink or source for these bacteria and to measure increases in FIB densities during wet weather. Samples were collected on 10 days over a 1-yr period beginning February 2003 at four sites within the wetlands and one site in Ballona Creek opposite the west tide gate. Incoming flood and outgoing ebb tides were sampled during each sampling event at each station. Water from Ballona Creek may …

Making Happiness In West Egg And Simburbia: An Inquiry Into Consumption In The Great Gatsby And The Sims, Shawn Thomson Jan 2006

Making Happiness In West Egg And Simburbia: An Inquiry Into Consumption In The Great Gatsby And The Sims, Shawn Thomson

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First two paragraphs]

At the end of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Nick Carraway reflects of his journey to the East: “this has been a story of the West” (184). Nick never explains exactly how this is the case, particularly odd since all the action takes place between Manhattan and Long Island. Nick’s hesitant explanation for this puzzling conclusion lies in the western origin of the central characters of the novel and their inability to adapt “to Eastern Life” (184). But the characters seem a part of, if not overshadowed by, the riotous world of West Egg. Only …
