Who Is At The City Gates? A Surreptitious Approach To Curriculum-Making In Art Education, James Haywood Rolling Jan 2006

Who Is At The City Gates? A Surreptitious Approach To Curriculum-Making In Art Education, James Haywood Rolling

Teaching and Leadership - All Scholarship

The author relates the story of an exercise in curriculum-making that took place at The School at Columbia University as 4th graders responded to the erection of The Gates in New York’s Central Park in the winter of 2005, a unique installation of conceptual art by artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude. The development of these responses over several weeks surreptitiously afforded each participant in this curriculum experience the opportunity to conceptualize certain methods and meanings most salient to them. This article opens a creative space for reconsidering some notions on what constitutes exemplary content, curricula, and criteria for assessment in art …

The Challenges Of Institutionalizing Comprehensive Restorative Justice: Theory And Practice In Nova Scotia, Jennifer Llewellyn, Bruce Archibald Jan 2006

The Challenges Of Institutionalizing Comprehensive Restorative Justice: Theory And Practice In Nova Scotia, Jennifer Llewellyn, Bruce Archibald

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

The Nova Scotia Restorative Justice Program ("NSRJ") is one of the oldest and by all accounts the most comprehensive in Canada. The program centres on youth justice, and operates through referrals by police, prosecutors, judges and correctional officials to community organizations which facilitate restorative conferences and other restoratively oriented processes. More than five years of NSRJ experience with thousands of cases has led to a considerable rethinking of restorative justice theory and practice in relation to governing policies, standards for program implementation and responses to controversial issues. The purpose of this paper is to explore the significance of the Nova …

A Logistic Regression/Markov Chain Model For Ncaa Basketball, Paul H. Kvam, Joel Sokol Jan 2006

A Logistic Regression/Markov Chain Model For Ncaa Basketball, Paul H. Kvam, Joel Sokol

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

Each year, more than $3 billion is wagered on the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament. Most of that money is wagered in pools where the object is to correctly predict winners of each game, with emphasis on the last four teams remaining (the Final Four). In this paper, we present a combined logistic regression/Markov chain model for predicting the outcome of NCAA tournament games given only basic input data. Over the past 6 years, our model has been significantly more successful than the other common methods such as tournament seedings, the AP and ESPN/USA Today polls, the RPI, and …

Book Review: Gary Botting, Extradition Between Canada And The United States (Ardsley: Transnational Publishers, 2005), Robert Currie Jan 2006

Book Review: Gary Botting, Extradition Between Canada And The United States (Ardsley: Transnational Publishers, 2005), Robert Currie

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

Both domestic and international laws regarding the extradition of fugitive criminal offenders are in a state of flux throughout the world. The current legal landscape reflects tension between the interest of state authorities in promoting “security,” on the one hand, and increasing recognition that human rights obligations are at play, on the other. Gary Botting’s book, Extradition Between Canada and the United States, successfully addresses this tension by way of a detailed examination of what is probably the most integrated extradition partnership outside the European Union.

Sustainability Reporting At Higher Education Institutions, Robert Heilmayr Jan 2006

Sustainability Reporting At Higher Education Institutions, Robert Heilmayr

CMC Senior Theses

Multiple declarations, governmental and non-profit organizations and universities have issued a call for proper reporting of social and environmental impacts and initiatives within academia. Such reporting can increase awareness of environmental and social impacts, encourage development of sustainable policy and build a campus culture more committed to sustainability. Sustainability reporting at Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) has the added benefit of being a powerful teaching aid. This paper follows multiple lines of inquiry in order to determine whether HEIs are taking advantage of the opportunities afforded by sustainability reporting. The analysis evaluates the history of sustainability reporting at HEIs and compares …

The Origins Of And Economic Momentum Behind "Pay For Performance" Reimbursement, Rick Mayes Jan 2006

The Origins Of And Economic Momentum Behind "Pay For Performance" Reimbursement, Rick Mayes

Political Science Faculty Publications

"Pay for performance," a reimbursement method under which some physicians and hospitals are paid more than others for the same services because they have been deemed to deliver better quality care and their patients appear to have better outcomes, is enormously controversial. Disputes invariably arise over how "quality" should (or even can) be measured. Nevertheless, differentiating between medical providers, financially, lies at the heart of this new reimbursement innovation developed by insurance companies and employers. Its two main objectives are: (1) to increase the overall quality of health care that patients receive, and (2) to encourage behavioral change on the …

Hiv/Aids In Africa, Sandra F. Joireman Jan 2006

Hiv/Aids In Africa, Sandra F. Joireman

Political Science Faculty Publications

The response of the United States to the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Africa is an example of the redefined nature of security threats that characterizes the post-September 11 period. Even the most ardent realists now accept that serious threats exist to US security apart from those brewing in organized states. Scholars and governments have been forced to adopt a greater sensitivity to the issues that underlie international violence and terrorism, such as a lack of political freedom, state failure, poverty, and HIV/AIDS, the topic addressed in this chapter as an indirect threat to US security interests in Africa.1

Assessing Human Trafficking In Canada Flawed Strategies And The Rhetoric Of Human Rights, Constance Macintosh Jan 2006

Assessing Human Trafficking In Canada Flawed Strategies And The Rhetoric Of Human Rights, Constance Macintosh

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

This paper will present the argument that Canada’s rhetoric of protecting the human rights of trafficking victims is at odds with its practice. Trafficking victims are treated essentially the same as any other irregular migrant, and the specter of trafficking is invoked to justify acts which arguably violate Canada’s international human rights obligations. This paper will offer an overview of what little information is available regarding the extent of trafficking in Canada, and then will conduct a close examination of the Canadian approach to trafficking and its victims. In addition to considering the logic and consequences of the Canadian strategy …

Consumer Privacy And Radio Frequency Identification Technology, Teresa Scassa, Theodore Chiasson, Michael Deturbide, Anne Uteck Jan 2006

Consumer Privacy And Radio Frequency Identification Technology, Teresa Scassa, Theodore Chiasson, Michael Deturbide, Anne Uteck

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

Radio Frequency ID tags are poised to replace the UPC barcode as a mechanism for inventory control in the wholesale and retail contexts. Yet the tiny chips offer a range of potential uses that go beyond the bar code. In this paper the authors define RFID technology and its applications. They explore the privacy implications of this technology and consider recent attempts in the U.S. and European Union to grapple with the privacy issues raised by the deployment of RFIDs at the retail level. The authors then consider the extent to which Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act …

Transparency In International Commercial Arbitration, Catherine A. Rogers Jan 2006

Transparency In International Commercial Arbitration, Catherine A. Rogers

Faculty Scholarship

Scholars have long been making the case for expanding transparency in the international commercial arbitration system, but recently these proposals have taken on a greater sense of urgency and an apparent willingness to forcibly impose transparency reforms on unwilling parties. These new transparency advocates exhort the general public's stakehold in many issues being arbitrated, which they contend necessitates transparency reforms, including compulsory publication of international commercial arbitration awards.

In this symposium essay, I begin by developing a definition of transparency in the adjucatory setting, and conceptually distinguishing from other concepts, like "public access" and "disclosure," which are often improperly treated …

Antitrust And Inefficient Joint Ventures: Why Sports Leagues Should Look More Like Mcdonald's And Less Like The United Nations, Stephen F. Ross, Stefan Szymanski Jan 2006

Antitrust And Inefficient Joint Ventures: Why Sports Leagues Should Look More Like Mcdonald's And Less Like The United Nations, Stephen F. Ross, Stefan Szymanski

Faculty Scholarship

Antitrust law generally favors joint ventures that allow separate firms to integrate economic functions while continuing to compete as independent entities. In evaluating the risks to competition that joint ventures could pose, insufficient attention has been paid to the risk that joint ventures with market power may be structured so that the parties, acting in their independent self interest, will prevent the venture from providing innovative goods and services responsive to consumer demand. In these cases, it may be better if a single firm provided services rather than having them provided jointly.

We illustrate this problem by challenging the conventional …
