Calcareous Fen Vegetation And Ecology And The Disjunct Betula Glandulosa In Southeastern Alaska, Joni M. Johnson
Calcareous Fen Vegetation And Ecology And The Disjunct Betula Glandulosa In Southeastern Alaska, Joni M. Johnson
Biological Sciences
Calcareous fens are rare within southeastern Alaska due to their unique geochemical setting, as are the plant communities produced by these environs. On a global scale these wetland types have been identified as valuable for their biodiversity and have received special protection. The first objective of this research was to characterize the floristics and hydrogeochemistry of a subset of calcareous fens on Chichagof Island in the northern Alexander Archipelago through intensive sampling within each site. Multivariate analyses were used to describe these wetland systems. The second objective of this study included investigating whether or not the disjunct Betula glandulosa (dwarf …
Acacia Constricta Gains Novel Benefits From Ants While Minimizing Potential Conflicts, E. Fleur Nicklen
Acacia Constricta Gains Novel Benefits From Ants While Minimizing Potential Conflicts, E. Fleur Nicklen
Biological Sciences
The sum of costs and benefits in an interspecific interaction determines whether the relationship is mutualistic, neutral, or antagonistic. We investigate novel benefits Acacia constricta may gain from ant visitors and how A. constricta may minimize potential costs of ant visitation. A. constricta attracts ants onto its foliage and encourages nesting at its base with extrafloral nectaries. Plants with basal nests have significantly greater soil nutrients and produce twice as many seeds as plants lacking basal nests (Wagner 1997). Along side these benefits, however, ants can interfere with plant reproduction. This study tests whether augmented soil nutrients increase A. constricta's …
Investigation Of Co₂ Sequestration Options For Alaskan North Slope With Emphasis On Enhanced Oil Recovery, Santosh Bramhadev Patil
Investigation Of Co₂ Sequestration Options For Alaskan North Slope With Emphasis On Enhanced Oil Recovery, Santosh Bramhadev Patil
Engineering
Carbon dioxide (CO₂), the main component of greenhouse gases, is released into the atmosphere primarily by combustion of fossil fuels like coal and oil. Due to a conspicuous lack of any CO₂ sequestration studies for Alaskan North Slope (ANS), the study of CO₂ sequestration options will open new avenues for CO₂ disposal options, such as viscous oil reservoirs and coal seams, on the ANS. This study focuses on the investigation of CO₂ storage options by screening ANS oil pools amenable to enhanced oil recovery, evaluating phase behavior of viscous oil and CO₂ mixture, and simulating enhanced oil recovery by CO₂ …
Resource Estimation For Platinum At Goodnews Bay, Alaska, Victor Octavio Tenorio
Resource Estimation For Platinum At Goodnews Bay, Alaska, Victor Octavio Tenorio
Engineering
Ore grade estimation is one of the most difficult problems when mining offshore deposits. In this research, a platinum deposit near Goodnews Bay, South-West of Alaska, was estimated with emerging techniques such as conditional simulation and support vector machines (SVM). Results of the estimation are presented and compared with a traditional estimation technique, such as the Inverse Distance Squared method. The area was divided in three clusters, based on the K-means method and geographical features. Also, Genetic Algorithm was used for appropriate data division. SVM parameters were optimized prior to the ore grade calculations. All estimations produced similar results for …

Origin Of The Interlayer Exchange Coupling In [Co/Pt]/Nio/ [Co/Pt] Multilayers Studied With Xas, Xmcd, And Micromagnetic Modeling, Andrew Baruth, D.J. Keavney, John D. Burton, Karolina Janicka, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Lu Yuan, Sy_Hwang Liou, Shireen Adenwalla
Sy-Hwang Liou Publications
The origin of the oscillatory interlayer exchange coupling in [Co/Pt] /NiO/ [Co/Pt] multilayers is investigated using advanced microscopy and spectroscopy techniques and micromagnetic modeling. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements show the presence of the canting of Ni spins in the NiO film being greater for antiferromagnetically coupled multilayers than for ferromagnetically coupled ones. This behavior is consistent with the model, which assumes a different sign of the exchange coupling at the two interfaces and the antiferromagnetic layer-by-layer coupling in the NiO film. An unexpectedly short attenuation length of 4 Å for secondary electrons in NiO is measured, which has …
Portable Odor Detection Device For Quality Inspection Of Alaska Pink Salmon (Oncorhynchus Gorbuscha), Jiraporn Chantarachoti
Portable Odor Detection Device For Quality Inspection Of Alaska Pink Salmon (Oncorhynchus Gorbuscha), Jiraporn Chantarachoti
Fisheries
This study investigated the ability of a portable hand-held electronic nose (EN) to detect spoilage of whole and canned Alaska pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) using ethanol as a spoilage indicator for canned salmon. Fish held in seawater (14°C) and in slush ice (1°C) were sampled and canned at various intervals of time up to 3 and 16 days of storage, respectively. The EN measured volatile compounds emanating from the gill and belly cavity of whole fish, in conjunction with sensory and microbial analyses. The EN and sensory evaluations were conducted on the canned products. In addition, static headspace gas chromatography …
Effects Of Marine-Derived Nutrients On Population Dynamics Of Sockeye Salmon (Oncorhynchus Nerka), Tadayasu Uchiyama
Effects Of Marine-Derived Nutrients On Population Dynamics Of Sockeye Salmon (Oncorhynchus Nerka), Tadayasu Uchiyama
Fisheries
The effects of marine-derived nutrients (MDN) on the productivity of sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) stocks in Alaska were examined through nitrogen stable isotope analysis of smolts and mathematical models of the sockeye stock-recruit relationship. Smolt 8 [delta]¹⁵N was used to infer the degree to which smolts depend on MDN for their growth. We attempted to identify the characteristics of sockeye nursery lakes and watersheds that affect the availability of MDN to juvenile sockeye using multiple regression. Stock-recruit models incorporating MDN effects were fit to sockeye escapement-return data to test if fluctuations in sockeye stock productivity could be explained by changes …
A Model-Based Design Tool For Systems-Level Spacecraft Design , Brandon Eames, Allan Mcinnes, Jared Crace, Joe Graham
A Model-Based Design Tool For Systems-Level Spacecraft Design , Brandon Eames, Allan Mcinnes, Jared Crace, Joe Graham
Small Satellite Conference
It is standard practice to mathematically model and analyze the various subsystems that make up a spacecraft, to ensure that they will function correctly when built. However, the system-level behavior of the spacecraft is generally understood in much less rigorous terms. This leaves the spacecraft system far more vulnerable than the subsystems to unforeseen design errors which may not manifest themselves until the integration and test phase, when design changes are most expensive in terms of cost and schedule. In this paper, we present Spacecraft Design Workbench, an extensible graphical design tool built upon the Generic Modeling Environment (GME) tool …

Performance Modelling Of Imaging Service Of Earth Observation Satellites With Two-Dimensional Markov Chain, Wen Chen, Stephen Mackin, Phil Palmer
Small Satellite Conference
Modelling satellite service systems and analysing the performance statistics systematically will provide a useful guide in designing satellite systems. A Satellite observation service consists of two stagesimage capture and image download. These two stages have been modelled and analysed individually in previous studies, assuming no memory constraint onboard the satellite. It is necessary to integrate two stages in one model with the memory constraint, so that overall system performance can be analysed and the system parameters could be carefully designed to achieve a certain quality of service. In this paper, a two-dimensional Markov chain model is proposed for modelling the …
Controlling Swarms Of Bandit Inspector Spacecraft, Jeremy Neubauer
Controlling Swarms Of Bandit Inspector Spacecraft, Jeremy Neubauer
Small Satellite Conference
The vast foreseeable benefits of on-orbit servicing to current and future space systems have sparked the development of both large-scale servicing spacecraft and small-scale technology demonstration platforms. The latter provide the ability to prove certain crucial technologies more efficiently than their larger counterparts, due to increased responsiveness and reduced cost. Washington University’s Bandit is one such vehicle currently in progress, designed to research the sensory, autonomy, and control problems of the multivehicle, close-proximity flight necessary to nearly all of the on-orbit servicing industry’s ambitions. This study assesses the ability of behavior-based methods to solve the multi-Bandit control problem, complicated by …
A Software Defined Radio Ais For The Za-002 Satellite, Kgabo Mathapo
A Software Defined Radio Ais For The Za-002 Satellite, Kgabo Mathapo
Small Satellite Conference
ZA-002 is the second South African satellite, and is scheduled to be launched in December 2006. A software defined radio (SDR) automatic identification system (AIS) receiver is proposed as a possible experimental payload for this satellite. The AIS receiver can be used to track and store movement of ships at sea, and then forward this information to the ground station upon request. This paper demonstrates the design of a SDR AIS receiver for a satellite. The design of a GMSK/FM modem as used in AIS is presented, followed by simulation results.
Robust Attitude Control With Fuzzy Momentum Unloading For Satellites Using Reaction Wheels, J. Zapf
Robust Attitude Control With Fuzzy Momentum Unloading For Satellites Using Reaction Wheels, J. Zapf
Small Satellite Conference
Keywordsattitude control, robust control, fuzzy logic The performance and power characteristics of any satellite attitude control system are crucial to the success of the satellite mission. This is especially true for small satellites, which have some of the strictest constraints of all. Reaction wheel systems are an attractive means of control for many satellites, because they offer a high pointing accuracy and are not fuel dependent. These systems are typically more complex, however, and can be fairly demanding on the satellite power system. This paper focuses on two major difficulties associated with the implementation of reaction wheel systems. First, the …

Boiga Irregularis+ (Reptile)
Other Publications in Wildlife Management
This night-loving and tree-loving, brown tree snake (Boiga irregularis) is so secretive in its nature that it is frequently concealed on container ships and in aircraft cargo. It probably arrived on Guam after World War II in a cargo ship. Now the wetlands, coastlands and forests of Guam are bereft of nine out of twelve native bird species (and two out of eleven native lizards) due to the snakes voracious appetite. The brown tree snake is not a fussy feeder, stimulating the very real fear that it might drive yet more species to extinction.
Coverage Testing In A Production Software Development Environment, Kent Bortz
Coverage Testing In A Production Software Development Environment, Kent Bortz
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
This project proposes that current testing methodologies used by standard testing tools are not sufficient to ensure sufficient test coverage. Test tools provide important and irreplaceable test data but are not capable of guaranteeing high percentage of path exposure (coverage). If the code path includes loop statements like, "if" or "when" then the number of paths to test grows exponentially. The growth of the code path becomes exponential when nested decision statements are considered. The most common methodology used in today's testing environment verifies each line of code but does not verify all path combination. Testing per line of code …

Development Of An Information Technology Plan For A Virtual Enterprise Program At A Community College, Christian P. Romero
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
This project proposed a technical solution to support the development of a Virtual Enterprise program at a community college. The college is located in a rural area that does not have large manufacturing or service-based businesses generating jobs. Consequently, many jobs are created by entrepreneurial endeavors. Traditional small start-ups are risky though. Many young people must leave the area to get better, higher-paying jobs. Individuals, especially students, need an opportunity to try out promising business ideas for practice, using a virtual global market on the Internet. A program of this type would provide valuable business experience to students from all …

Pigs are large omnivorous mammals with powerful bodies and coarse hairy coats. Their thick necks, wedge-shaped heads and mobile snouts are used in feeding to uproot the ground and find prey or plant material. Ecological characteristics of feral pig activity, group size and home range size should be considered in any management strategy aimed to control pig numbers or reduce their negative impact. Feral pig activity varies between different habitats and climates. High activity has been reported to occur in early morning and late afternoon in tropical climates (Diong 1982). However, in India pigs have been reported to feed nocturnally …

We report measurements of transverse momentum pt spectra for ten event multiplicity classes of p−pcollisions at √s=200 GeV. By analyzing the multiplicity dependence we find that the spectrum shape can be decomposed into a part with amplitude proportional to multiplicity and described by a Lévy distribution on transverse mass mt, and a part with amplitude proportional to multiplicity squared and described by a Gaussian distribution on transverse rapidity yt. The functional forms of the two parts are nearly independent of event multiplicity. The two parts can be identified with the soft and hard components of a two-component model …
Feedback Applications In Active Noise Control For Small Axial Cooling Fans, Matthew J. Green
Feedback Applications In Active Noise Control For Small Axial Cooling Fans, Matthew J. Green
Theses and Dissertations
Feedback active noise control (ANC) has been applied as a means of attenuating broadband noise from a small axial cooling fan. Such fans are used to maintain thermal stability inside of computers, projectors, and other office equipment and home appliances. The type of low-level noise radiated from axial cooling fans has been classified as harmful to productivity and human well being. Previous research has successfully implemented feed-forward ANC, targeting specific narrow-band fan noise content related to the blade passage frequency (BPF) of the fan. The reference signal required for a feed-forward algorithm limits its ability to attenuate much of the …

This paper presents a framework for the automation of the Laser Aided Manufacturing Process (LAMP) lab at the University of Missouri-Rolla. The groundwork for the proposed system involves the integration of the LabVIEW software package and a PXI-8195 real time controller with several sensors and actuators. The incorporation of all key control parameters into one virtual instrument will help achieve the goal of an automated hybrid system. To achieve this goal, a five-phase plan, which will be further discussed in the paper, has been developed. The first phase of this plan, which includes the deposition of a thin walled structure …

The laser additive manufacturing technique of laser deposition allows quick fabrication of fully-dense metallic components directly from Computer Aided Design (CAD) solid models. The applications of laser deposition include rapid prototyping, rapid tooling and part refurbishment. The development of an accurate predictive model for laser deposition is extremely complicated due to the multitude of process parameters and materials properties involved. In this work, a heat transfer and fluid flow model is developed. The model is used to predict dilution under varying process parameters for deposits of Ti-6Al-4V. Experimental validation of the predicted dilution is presented. The laser used is a …

A dramatic reduction in the cost, energy and time can be achieved by pursuing part repairing especially for die industry. In this paper, repairing process development was carried out by a hybrid manufacturing system aiming at the prevalent kinds of die core damages which is worn-out or corroded surface. Surface patches pattern is used for generating tool path to repair the damaged faces. A user-friendly software tool was developed to facilitate the users. 3D repairing technology was also integrated which ensures the alignment when more than one damages need to be repaired without reloading the part. Realization of 3D surface …

Since its appearance, rapid prototyping technology has been of interest to various industries that are looking for a process to produce/build a part directly from a CAD model in a short time. Among them, the direct metal deposition process is the only process which directly manufactures a fully dense metal part without intermediate steps. However, challenges of the direct metal deposition process include building overhang structures, producing precision surfaces, and making parts with complex structures. Coupled between the additive and the subtractive processes into a single workstation, the integrated process, or hybrid process, can produce a metal part with machining …

We present the first fully-nonlinear numerical study of the dynamics of highly-spinning-black-hole binaries. We evolve binaries from quasicircular orbits (as inferred from post-Newtonian theory), and find that the last stages of the orbital motion of black-hole binaries are profoundly affected by their individual spins. In order to cleanly display its effects, we consider two equal-mass holes with individual spin parameters S/m2=0.757, both aligned and antialigned with the orbital angular momentum (and compare with the spinless case), and with an initial orbital period of 125M. We find that the aligned case completes three orbits and merges significantly after the antialigned case, …

Structural Verification Of The Rigidizable Inflatable Get-Away-Special Experiment, Anna Gunn-Golkin, Sarah Helms, Richard Cobb
Small Satellite Conference
The Air Force Institute of Technology has developed the Rigidizable Inflatable Get-Away-Special Experiment (RIGEX) in order to advance development of inflatable, rigidizable space structures. RIGEX will test the deployment and structural characteristics of three thermoplastic composite tubes in the space environment. RIGEX is designed to fly in the Canister for All Payload Ejections container within the Space Shuttle Orbiter’s payload bay. This paper summarizes the science and motivation behind RIGEX’s inflatable rigidizable structure research. It then details the design and analysis of the RIGEX flight structure, which will house the inflatable rigidizable experiment. The paper details the development of a …

Additional Algorithms For Sensor Chip Alignment To Blind Datums, Gary B. Hughes
Additional Algorithms For Sensor Chip Alignment To Blind Datums, Gary B. Hughes
Statistics
Alignment of the sensor focal plane array (FPA) to optical components is a critical design feature. Imaging system designs include reference datums that provide the basis for manufacturing alignment in each sub-assembly. Measurement of z and parallelism positioning can be problematic, since the relevant datum features are often beneath the mounting platform and are obscured to the measurement system. General algorithms for determining sensor chip alignment when datum features are inaccessible to the measurement system have been developed. Pre-characterization measurements of datum surfaces are stored for later use during alignment measurement to determine datum locations. The algorithms are useful for …

Federal, State, And District Level English Language Learning Program Entry And Exit Requirements: Effects On The Education Of Language Minority Learners, Alex Ragan, Nonie Lesaux
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
Identification of a language minority learner for placement in a program for English Language Learners (ELLs), and the length of the support program, may have a significant effect on the student's academic achievement. Widespread anecdotal evidence suggests that criteria used to make placement decisions vary widely across the U.S. This study systematically examines related federal laws and guidance, as well as published entry and exit criteria for ELL programs for the 10 states and 10 districts in the U.S. with the largest enrollment of ELLs. For the majority of placement decisions, a measure of English proficiency is used. Very few …
