Mesianismo Lmperialista En El Siglo De Oro: Experiencia Imperialista Y Espiritualidad Mesianica En El Caso De Cristobal Colon., Jason Wesley Hawkins Jan 2006

Mesianismo Lmperialista En El Siglo De Oro: Experiencia Imperialista Y Espiritualidad Mesianica En El Caso De Cristobal Colon., Jason Wesley Hawkins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Religious ideology played a powerful role in the shaping of the Spanish Empire as seen in the writings of Christopher Columbus, the first widely documented European explorer to reach the Americas. Columbus was driven by intense feelings of divine providence and saw his project in biblical and prophetic terms. In his diaries and letters, as well as his Book of Prophecies, Columbus' religious fervor shows a messianic zeal and his rhetoric mimics that of the newly emerging Spanish Empire who, in tum, mimicked the messianic and imperialist rhetoric of the Catholic Church. This zeal was not particular to Columbus' personality …

Mitigating Worm Propagation On Virtual Lans, Xiaoguang. Sun Jan 2006

Mitigating Worm Propagation On Virtual Lans, Xiaoguang. Sun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Recent worms have used sophisticated propagation techniques to propagate faster than the patch distribution and have utilized previously unknown vulnerabilities. To mitigate repetition of such epidemics in future, active defense mechanisms are needed that not only identify malicious activity, but can also defend against widespread outbreak. We provide a framework capable of reacting quickly to quarantine infections. The fundamental components of our framework are detector and VLAN switch. We have provided a proof of concept implementation, where we use the Blaster worm as an example, and demonstrate that detection of worms is possible, and individual infected hosts can be isolated …

Modeling Of Flexible Pipe For Culvert Application Under Shallow Burial Condition, Terdkiat Limpeteeprakarn Jan 2006

Modeling Of Flexible Pipe For Culvert Application Under Shallow Burial Condition, Terdkiat Limpeteeprakarn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Flexible thermoplastic p1pes under field and laboratory loading conditions have been examined in the present study. The flexible pipes were tested under truck loading application with shallow soil cover. The pipe-soil system response includes soil stresses around and above the buried pipes, vertical pipe crown diametral strain, and circumferential pipe wall strains. Modeling the pipe-soil system is made using plane strain and thin ring assumptions. A thin ring model using Castigliano's theorem is developed to analyze the behavior and response of a flexible pipe under well defined loading conditions and simulate the behavior of the buried pipe under the live …

(3) Do family characteristics moderate differences between clinical and nonclinical youth in motherchild of conflict? (4) Do family characteristics moderate differences between clinical and nonclinical …

New Results In Group Theoretic Cryptology, Michal Sramka Jan 2006

New Results In Group Theoretic Cryptology, Michal Sramka

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

With the publication of Shor's quantum algorithm for solving discrete logarithms in finite cyclic groups, a need for new cryptographic primitives arose; namely, for more secure primitives that would prevail in the post-quantum era. The aim of this dissertation is to exploit some hard problems arising from group theory for use in cryptography. Over the years, there have been many such proposals. We first look at two recently proposed schemes based on some form of a generalization of the discrete logari thm problem (DLP), identify their weaknesses, and cryptanalyze them. By applying the exper tise gained from the above cryptanalyses, …

Permutation-Based Transformations For Digital Multimedia Encryption And Steganography, Daniel Socek Jan 2006

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The aim of this work is to explore the utilization of permutation-based transformations to achieve compression, encryption and steganography in the domain of digital videos. The main contribution of this dissertation is a novel type of digital video encryption that has several advantages over other currently available digital video encryption methods. An extended classification of digital video encryption algorithms is presented in order to clarify these advantages. The classification itself represents an original work, since to date, no such comprehensive classification is provided in known scientific literature. Both security and performance aspects of the proposed method are thoroughly analyzed to …

Penny Stock Ipos As Investments, Daniel K. Konku Jan 2006

Penny Stock Ipos As Investments, Daniel K. Konku

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Researchers of Initial Public Offerings, IPOs, have, traditionally, filtered out low-priced stocks with cut-off prices depending on individual study. This study examines underpricing, short- and long-run performance of one special class of such low-priced stocks. I examine IPOs filed for and issued as Penny Stocks, as defined by the amended SEC Act of 1990. The study finds average first-day excess returns of 128% over a benchmark NASDAQ Decile 1 Index. The excess returns on nonpenny IPOs issued on the same markets as the penny stocks are 7.6% over the S&P 500 Index. Cross-sectional analyses show that lower-priced penny stocks and …

Prediction Of Broadband Self-Noise Of An Airfoil, Carlos L. Gomez Jan 2006

Prediction Of Broadband Self-Noise Of An Airfoil, Carlos L. Gomez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

With the increase of air traffic and the introduction of larger aircraft and therefore larger engines, the noise generated by aircraft engines have become of greater importance. In order to address these problems, noise prediction codes must be developed in order to better understand the noise generating process. This thesis addresses important issues related to broadband self-noise from ducted fans based on the prediction model developed by Glegg and Jochault [1]. By addressing issues regarding the prediction of broadband self-noise from an isolated airfoil with the observer in the far field directly overhead (at 90° above), improvements can be made …

Prgmdh Algorithm For Neural Network Development And Its Applications, Chetan. Tangadpelli Jan 2006

Prgmdh Algorithm For Neural Network Development And Its Applications, Chetan. Tangadpelli

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

The existing Group Method of Data Handling (GMDH) algorithm has characteristics that are ideal for neural network design. This thesis introduces a new algorithm that applies some of the best characteristics of GMDH to neural network design and develops a Pruning based Regenerated Network by discarding the neurons in a layer which don't contribute for the creation of neurons in next layer. Unlike other conventional algorithms, which generate a network which is a black box, the new algorithm provides visualization of the network displaying all the neurons in the network. The algorithm is general enough that it will accept any …

Quorum Based Ip Autoconfiguration In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Tinghui. Xu Jan 2006

Quorum Based Ip Autoconfiguration In Mobile Ad Hoc Networks, Tinghui. Xu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

IP address autoconfiguration poses a challenge for mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) because it has to be done to ensure correct routing. An IP autoconfiguration protocol that is based on quorum voting is proposed. Nodes are distributed configured when a write quorum can be collected. Making the compromise between message overhead and data consistency, quorum voting enforces data consistency by ensuring fresh read on every access so that each node is configured with a unique IP address. The protocol is scalable since the configuration information is maintained locally and no central server is involved. Extensive experiments are carried out comparing the …

Readability Analysis Of Elementary-Level Science Textbooks, Robyn Trainer Jan 2006

Readability Analysis Of Elementary-Level Science Textbooks, Robyn Trainer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2000 - 2009

Given both the unprecedented attention to the importance of providing children with the best possible science textbooks and the overwhelming evidence that students in the United States are severely lacking the most basic science knowledge, the decline in the number of students pursuing science degrees is alarming. In spite of all the efforts being made, a disparity still exists between (1) the wealth of science information available, (2) the apparent ease of access to scientific information, and (3) the lack of scientific academic progress being made in classrooms across the United States. A literature review was conducted which included the …

Does The Public Understand Intellectual Property Law? Do Lawyers?, David Vaver Jan 2006

Does The Public Understand Intellectual Property Law? Do Lawyers?, David Vaver

All Papers

I was given a speaker's dream brief: to talk about whatever I wanted so long as it had something to do with the theme of the conference - intellectual property ("IP"). A few suggestions were made in a nice, non-authoritarian way. These could, of course, have been treated the way IP lawyers usually proceed, i.e., by entirely ignoring them. That is called purposive construction, and Canadian and British courts do it all the time. So a British court has read a patent claim to say that "vertical" can also mean "leaning", a decision that comforted builders everywhere. Not to be …

Judicial Selection, Appointments Gridlock, And The Nuclear Option, David S. Law, Lawrence B. Solum Jan 2006

Judicial Selection, Appointments Gridlock, And The Nuclear Option, David S. Law, Lawrence B. Solum

Faculty Scholarship

This Article unfolds in six parts, of which the introduction is Part I. In Part II, The Legal Framework for Judicial Selection, we explore both the constitutional provisions and the Senate rules and customs that bound the judicial selection process. Part III, The Premises of the Model, discusses the analytical assumptions underlying our depiction of the judicial selection process in the form of a simple spatial model that can be easily understood and manipulated. The heart of the article is found in Parts IV and V. In Part IV, A Pivotal Politics Model of the Judicial Selection Process, we set …

Download It While Its Hot: Open Access And Legal Scholarship, Lawrence B. Solum Jan 2006

Download It While Its Hot: Open Access And Legal Scholarship, Lawrence B. Solum

Faculty Scholarship

This Article analyzes the shift of legal scholarship from the old world of law reviews to today's world of peer reviews to tomorrow's world of open access legal blogs. This shift is occurring in three dimensions. First, legal scholarship is moving from the long form (treatises and law review articles) to the short form (very short articles, blog posts, and online collaborations). Second, a regime of exclusive rights is giving way to a regime of open access. Third, intermediaries (law school editorial boards, peer-reviewed journals) are being supplemented by disintermediated forms (papers on the Internet, blogs). Blogs and internet conversations …

Markov Switching And Jump Diffusion Models With Applications In Mathematical Finance, Shengkun Xie Jan 2006

Markov Switching And Jump Diffusion Models With Applications In Mathematical Finance, Shengkun Xie

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

In this thesis, we study some jump diffusion models with Markov switching and transition densities for Markov switching diffusion processes with and without an absorbing barrier. We work out some analytical results, which have useful applications in mathematical finance and other related fields. The first-passage time problem for a Markov switching model is also studied and European type options and lookback options are computed in closed-form as examples to show that these models can be applied in practice. We apply optimization methods and kernel smoothing techniques to produce some important numerical results that show that jump diffusion with Markov switching …

Neuro Control Of Nonlinear Discrete Time Systems With Deadzone And Input Constraints, Pingan He, Wenzhi Gao, Jagannathan Sarangapani Jan 2006

Neuro Control Of Nonlinear Discrete Time Systems With Deadzone And Input Constraints, Pingan He, Wenzhi Gao, Jagannathan Sarangapani

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A neural network (NN) controller in discrete time is designed to deliver a desired tracking performance for a class of uncertain nonlinear systems with unknown deadzones and magnitude constraints on the input. The NN controller consists of two NNs: the first NN for compensating the unknown deadzones; and the second NN for compensating the uncertain nonlinear system dynamics. The magnitude constraints on the input are modeled as saturation nonlinearities and they are dealt with in the Lyapunov-based controller design. The uniformly ultimate boundedness (UUB) of the closed-loop tracking errors and the neural network weights estimation errors is demonstrated via Lyapunov …

The Rehnquist Court And The Groundwork For Greater First Amendment Scrutiny Of Intellectual Property, Mark P. Mckenna Jan 2006

The Rehnquist Court And The Groundwork For Greater First Amendment Scrutiny Of Intellectual Property, Mark P. Mckenna

Journal Articles

This contribution to the Washington University School of Law conference on the Rehnquist Court and the First Amendment addresses the Rehnquist Court's view of the role of the First Amendment in intellectual property cases. It argues that, while the Rehnquist Court was not eager to find a conflict between intellectual property laws and the First Amendment, there is reason to believe that it set the stage for greater First Amendment scrutiny of intellectual property protections. At the very least, the Court left that road open to future courts, which might be inclined to view intellectual property more skeptically.
