After recognizing the need for a simpler approach to the teaching of mathematical terminology, I concluded it would be valuable to make a unit of simplified terms and describe methods of teaching these terms. In this thesis I have compared the terminology found in the Virginia Standards of Learning objectives to the materials found at each grade level. The units developed are as follows: The Primary Persistence Unit- for grades K-2; The Elementary Expansion Unit- for grades 3-5; and The Middle School Mastery Unit- for grades 6-8.

Modeling Holographic Grating Imaging Systems Using The Angular Spectrum Propagation Method, Thomas Blasiak Aug 2006

Modeling Holographic Grating Imaging Systems Using The Angular Spectrum Propagation Method, Thomas Blasiak

Theses

The goal of this research was to describe the angular spectrum propagation method for the numerical calculation of scalar optical propagation phenomena. The angular spectrum propagation method has some advantages over the Fresnel propagation method for modeling low F# optical systems and non-paraxial systems. An example of one such system was modeled, namely the diffraction and propagation from a holographic diffraction grating. To accomplish this goal MATLAB® code was developed to implement the angular spectrum propagation method. Some classical imaging problems such as diffraction from a rectangular aperture, Talbot imaging, focal shift for converging beam illumination, and two beam interference …

An Introduction To Number Theory Prime Numbers And Their Applications., Crystal Lynn Anderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The author has found, during her experience teaching students on the fourth grade level, that some concepts of number theory haven't even been introduced to the students. Some of these concepts include prime and composite numbers and their applications. Through personal research, the author has found that prime numbers are vital to the understanding of the grade level curriculum. Prime numbers are used to aide in determining divisibility, finding greatest common factors, least common multiples, and common denominators. Through experimentation, classroom examples, and homework, the author has introduced students to prime numbers and their applications.

The Role Of The History Of Mathematics In Middle School., Mary Donette Carter Aug 2006

The Role Of The History Of Mathematics In Middle School., Mary Donette Carter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is the author's belief that middle school mathematics is greatly taught in isolation with little or no mention of its origin. Teaching mathematics from a historical perspective will lead to greater understanding, student inspiration, motivation, excitement, varying levels of learning, and appreciation for this subject. This thesis will develop four units that will incorporate original source documents and selected historical topics surrounding computation, numbers, and early calculating devices. Many of the units will center on the Rhind Papyrus and The Treviso Arithmetic. These units will be appropriate to middle school, with an emphasis on 6th grade.

Statistics: Raising The Bar For The Seventh Grade Classroom., Sherry Lynn Mullins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

After recognizing the need for a more thorough concentration of statistics at the seventh grade level, the author concluded that it would be a good idea to include statistics that cover both seventh and eighth grade Virginia Standards of Learning. Many years of administering the SOL mathematics test at the eighth grade level led the author to the understanding that some of the more advanced seventh graders would be missing some key concepts taught in eighth grade because those advanced students would be taking algebra in the eighth grade. In this thesis, the author has developed four units that she …

Designed For The Good Of All: The Flushing Remonstrance And Religious Freedom In America., Tabetha Garman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

On December 27, 1657, the men of Flushing, Long Island, signed a letter of protest addressed to the Governor-Director of New Netherlands. Though the law of the colony demanded otherwise, the men of Vlissengen pledged to accept all persons into their township, regardless of their religious persuasion. Their letter, called the Flushing Remonstrance, not only defied the laws of one of the most powerful, religious governors of the colonial age, it articulated a concept of religious freedom that extended beyond the principles of any other contemporary document.

Given its unique place in early American colonial history, why have historians not …

Polyaniline And Its Derivatives For Environmental Analysis., Atogho Jude Abia Aug 2006

Polyaniline And Its Derivatives For Environmental Analysis., Atogho Jude Abia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Electrooxidation has been used to deposit thin film polyaniline as well as its derivative - thin film poly (ortho-phenylenediamine) (POPD) and poly (meta-phenylenediamine) (PMPD) on carbon electrodes, which are subsequently used to monitor the environmental heavy metal ions (Hg2+, Pb2+ ,Cd2+) through a rather unusual "blocking" of anodic stripping for these metals. Using Hg2+ as a model, its cyclic voltammogram for a modified glassy carbon electrode with the resultant polymer shows an enhanced cathodic peak that increases linearly with the analyte ion concentration. POPD also exhibits unique selective detection for organic species. Acetaminophen and …

Signals For Lorentz Violation In Post-Newtonian Gravity, Quentin G. Bailey, V. Alan Kostelecký Aug 2006

Signals For Lorentz Violation In Post-Newtonian Gravity, Quentin G. Bailey, V. Alan Kostelecký

Publications

The pure-gravity sector of the minimal standard-model extension is studied in the limit of Riemann spacetime. A method is developed to extract the modified Einstein field equations in the limit of small metric fluctuations about the Minkowski vacuum, while allowing for the dynamics of the 20 independent coefficients for Lorentz violation. The linearized effective equations are solved to obtain the post-Newtonian metric. The corresponding post-Newtonian behavior of a perfect fluid is studied and applied to the gravitating many-body system. Illustrative examples of the methodology are provided using bumblebee models. The implications of the general theoretical results are studied for a …

Structural Analysis Of The Egr Family Of Transcription Factors: Templates For Predicitng Protein - Dna Internations, Jamie Duke Aug 2006

Structural Analysis Of The Egr Family Of Transcription Factors: Templates For Predicitng Protein - Dna Internations, Jamie Duke

Theses

The EGR family of transcription factors is known to be activated in cells exposed to growth factors in a variety of tissues. The overall structure of the family is highly conserved while the amino acid sequence can be quite diverse allowing for a wide array of DNA recognition sequences. Through homology modeling it is possible to reproduce the structure of the DNA binding domain of EGR proteins, which consists of three zinc fingers. It has also been determined through molecular dynamic simulations that most side chains within the domain reach an equilibrium state. However, residues that are essential for DNA …

We present a search for the flavor-changing neutral current decay Bs0 → φμ+μ- using about 0.45 fb-1 of data collected in pp̅ collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We find an upper limit on the branching ratio of this decay normalized to Bs0 → J/ ψφ of [Ɓ(Bs0 → φμ+μ-)] ÷ [Ɓ(Bs0 →J/ ψφ )]< 4.4 × 10-3 at the 95% C.L. Using the central value of the world average branching fraction …

Comparing The Statistical Tests For Homogeneity Of Variances., Zhiqiang Mu Aug 2006

Comparing The Statistical Tests For Homogeneity Of Variances., Zhiqiang Mu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Testing the homogeneity of variances is an important problem in many applications since statistical methods of frequent use, such as ANOVA, assume equal variances for two or more groups of data. However, testing the equality of variances is a difficult problem due to the fact that many of the tests are not robust against non-normality. It is known that the kurtosis of the distribution of the source data can affect the performance of the tests for variance. We review the classical tests and their latest, more robust modifications, some other tests that have recently appeared in the literature, and use …

A Study Of Producing Smoother Gradients In The Flexographic Process On Oriented Polypropylene With Uv Ink By Varying Screening Techniques, Gradient Lengths And The Surrounding, Wimonrat Boonprasit

Theses

Printers find that producing smooth gradients in the highlight area is a great challenge for flexographic printing. Screening technology vendors claim that hybrid screening technologies produce smoother gradients and enhance reproducible dots in the highlight areas. This study was designed to investigate if hybrid screening technologies can achieve better gradient results than other screening technologies—conventional screening and FM screening—with the flexographic process. A single test form was printed on oriented polypropylene with UV ink, as these are common materials used in flexible packaging. The first objective was to see how different pressure settings impact tone reproduction of each screening technique. …

Generalized Monotonic Functional Mixed Models With Application To Modeling Normal Tissue Complications , Matthew Schipper, Jeremy Taylor, Xihong Lin Aug 2006

Generalized Monotonic Functional Mixed Models With Application To Modeling Normal Tissue Complications , Matthew Schipper, Jeremy Taylor, Xihong Lin

The University of Michigan Department of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Normal tissue complications are a common side effect of radiation therapy. They are the consequence of the dose of radiation received by the normal tissue surrounding the tumor site. It is not known what function of the dose distribution to the normal tissue drives the presence and severity of the complications. Regarding the density of the dose distribution as a curve, a summary measure is obtained by integrating a weighting function of dose (w(d)) over the dose density. For biological reasons the weight function should be monotonic. We propose to study the dose effect on a clinical outcome using a …
