Documenting Decadal Spatial Changes In Seagrass And Acropora Palmata Cover By Aerial Photography Analysis In Vieques, Puerto Rico: 1937-2000, Luz Raquel Hernandez-Cruz, Samuel J. Purkis, Bernhard Riegl
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Aerial photographs from 1937–2000 of Bahía Salina del Sur on vieques, Puerto Rico were analyzed to detect and describe spatial changes in the areal cover of sea-grass beds in Bahía Salina del Sur. The images were pre-processed to minimize noise and unsupervised classification was used to detect areas colonized by seagrass. The number of individual seagrass patches, direction, and characteristic of growth were quantified and described. Seagrass coverage increased by 85.8% over the 64-yr period and this increase was best described by a 2nd order polynomial function (r2 = 0.91). Between 1937 and 2000, the spatial expression of the …

The synthesis, structure, and anion binding properties of chromogenic octamethylcalix[4] pyrroles (OMCPs) and their N-confused octamethylcalix[4] pyrrole isomers (NC-OMCPs) containing an inverted pyrrole ring connected via alpha'- and beta-positions are described. X-ray diffraction analyses proved the structures of two synthesized isomeric pairs of OMCPs and NC-OMCPs. The addition of anions to solutions of chromogenic OMCPs and NC-OMCPs resulted in different colors suggesting different anion-binding behaviors. The chromogenic NC-OMCPs showed significantly stronger anion-induced color changes compared to the corresponding chromogenic OMCP, and the absorption spectroscopy titrations indicated that chromogenic OMCPs and NC-OMCPs also possess different anion binding selectivity. Detailed NMR studies …
Robustness With Respect To Sampling For Stabilization Of Riesz Spectral Systems, Richard Rebarber, Stuart Townley
Robustness With Respect To Sampling For Stabilization Of Riesz Spectral Systems, Richard Rebarber, Stuart Townley
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
We suppose that a continuous-time feedback is input–output stabilizing for an infinite-dimensional system. We address the question of whether the sampled-data controller obtained by applying idealized sample-and-hold to this continuous-time feedback is also input–output stabilizing if the sampling time is small enough. This question has been previously addressed for fairly general systems under various conditions. In this note, we restrict our attention to Riesz spectral systems, for which we generalize the existing results. Specifically, we give two relatively simple conditions which, combined, are sufficient for the sampled-data controller to be stabilizing. The first condition is a spectrum decomposition for the …

Excerpt: "The CET emphasizes the importance of the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning (SoTL) and its goals of improved student learning, teaching effectiveness, faculty development and the creation of a deeply collegial community of and for teaching and learning. SoTL is not simply individuals engaged in pedagogical research that is make public and reviewed, but has an expansive meaning as well. In that view, SoTL is an attitude of questioning and inquiry about any aspect of the teaching – learning process, a curiosity about the results of pedagogical research and its implications for one’s own courses and students, a contemplative …
Set Inference For Semiparametric Discrete Games, Kyoo-Il Kim
Set Inference For Semiparametric Discrete Games, Kyoo-Il Kim
Research Collection School Of Economics
We consider estimation and inference of parameters in discrete games allowing for multiple equilibria, without using an equilibrium selection rule. We do a set inference while a game model can contain infinite dimensional parameters. Examples can include signaling games with discrete types where the type distribution is nonparametrically specified and entry-exit games with partially linear payoffs functions. A consistent set estimator and a confidence interval of a function of parameters are provided in this paper. We note that achieving a consistent point estimation often requires an information reduction. Due to this less use of information, we may end up a …

Occurrence Of Sulfonamide Antimicrobials In Private Water Wells In Washington County, Idaho, Usa, Angela L. Batt, Daniel D. Snow, Diana S. Aga
Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications
County (Weiser, Idaho) were collected to assess the impact of a nearby confined animal feeding operation (CAFO) on the quality of the local groundwater. All six samples were found contaminated by two veterinary antimicrobials, sulfamethazine (at concentrations from 0.076 to 0.22 μg/l) and sulfadimethoxine (at concentrations from 0.046 to 0.068 μg/l). These groundwater samples also contained elevated concentrations of nitrate and ammonium. Three of the sampled wells have nitrate levels that exceeded the maximum contaminant level set by the US Environmental Protection Agency for drinking water, with nitrate concentration as high as 39.1 mg/l. All but one well showed nitrate, …

USM Physics Program
We present visible and near-IR spectra of the nucleus of comet 162P/Siding Spring (also known as 2004 TU12) obtained in 2004 December, while it had no detectable coma. This is the third object observed to have intermittent cometary activity even when relatively close to the Sun. The spectra show no strong features in this wavelength range. This paucity of deep absorptions is common among low-albedo asteroids and the few comet nuclei observed in this spectral region. Marginal spectral structure is observed in the visible spectrum, and beyond 2 μm the flux from the nucleus is dominated by thermal emission. We …

Optical Image Blending For Underwater Mosaics, Fan Gu, Yuri Rzhanov
Optical Image Blending For Underwater Mosaics, Fan Gu, Yuri Rzhanov
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
Typical problems for creation of consistent underwater mosaic are misalignment and inhomogeneous illumination of the image frames, which causes visible seams and consequently complicates post-processing of the mosaics such as object recognition and shape extraction. Two recently developed image blending methods were explored in the literature: "gradient domain stitching" and "graph-cut" method, and they allow for improvement of illumination inconsistency and "ghosting" effects, respectively. However, due to the specifics of underwater imagery, these two methods cannot be used within a straightforward manner. In this paper, a new improved blending algorithm is proposed based on these two methods. By comparing with …

Tris(1,9-Diethyladeninium) Triiodide Diiodide, Elizabeth F. Day, Norman S. Dean, Andreas H. Franz
College of the Pacific Faculty Articles
X-ray analysis of the title compound reveals three crystallographically distinct cations of 1,9-diethyladeninium, two iodide anions and one triiodide anion in the asymmetric unit, giving six residues and the formula 3C9H14N5+·I3-·2I-. Standard purine nomenclature is used to identify the atoms of each adenine moiety. Hydrogen bonding is observed between atoms N6 and N7 of a pair of cations [N...N = 2.885 (4)/2.902 (3) and 2.854 (3)/2.854 (3) Å], with additional hydrogen bonding to I- anions via the other N6 H atom [N...I = 3.708 (3), 3.738 (3) and 3.638 (3) Å]. The triiodide anion is not involved in hydrogen bonding. …

Habitat Characteristics Of Spring Blackbird Roosts In East-Central South Dakota, H. Jeffrey Homan, Richard S. Sawin, George M. Linz, William J. Bleier
The Prairie Naturalist
In the northern Great Plains, blackbirds (Icteridae) roost almost exclusively in emergent-dominated wetlands. The physical characteristics of wetland roosts are not well understood. From March 20 to April 20, 1999, we studied 16 wetlands used as blackbird roosts in east-central South Dakota. Six wetlands had major roosts (range: 102,000-298,000 blackbirds); whereas, 10 wetlands had minor roosts (range: 2,010-34,000 blackbirds). Maximum roost size was correlated directly with emergent vegetation area (P = 0.05) and possibly with wetland basin area (P ≤ 0.10). Water depths were greater at used sites within wetlands of major roosts (median = 44 cm) than …

Age Structure And Reproductive Activity Of The Blue Sucker In The Milk River, Missouri River Drainage, Montana, Julie Bednarski, Dennis L. Scarnecchia
The Prairie Naturalist
The life history and ecology of the blue sucker (Cycleptus elongatus) in the lower Milk River, Montana were investigated in 2002 and 2003. A total of 253 blue sucker was captured; 248 adult fish, three larval fish, and two age-0 juveniles. The ages (n = 102) of the adult blue sucker ranged from 10 to 37 years; maximum age greatly exceeded ages reported in other studies. Blue sucker in the Milk River population grew slower, matured later, and lived longer than fish at lower latitudes. Adult females of the blue sucker were longer and weighed more than …

Experiments For Multibeam Backscatter Adjustments On The Noaa Ship Fairweather, Luciano E. Fonseca, Brian R. Calder
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping
A series of experiments were conducted to adjust and normalize the acoustic backscatter acquired by Reson 8111 and 8160 systems. The dependency of the backscatter on the receiver gain, transmit power, pulse width and acquisition mode was analyzed. Empirical beam patterns are calculated as the difference between the backscatter measured by the sonars and the expected backscatter. Expected acoustic backscatter is estimated based on a mathematical model.

Models Of Forbidden Line Emission Profiles From Axisymmetric Stellar Winds., Richard Ignace, A. Brimeyer
ETSU Faculty Works
A number of strong infrared forbidden lines have been observed in several evolved Wolf–Rayet (WR) star winds, and these are important for deriving metal abundances and testing stellar evolution models. In addition, because these optically thin lines form at large radius in the wind, their resolved profiles carry an imprint of the asymptotic structure of the wind flow. This work presents model forbidden line profile shapes formed in axisymmetric winds. It is well known that an optically thin emission line formed in a spherical wind expanding at constant velocity yields a flat-topped emission profile shape. Simulated forbidden lines are produced …

Chemistry Faculty Publications
2'-5'oligoadenylate-dependent ribonuclease L (RNase L) is one of the key enzymes involved in the function of interferons (IFNs), a family of cytokines participating in innate immunity against viruses and other microbial pathogens. Upon binding with its activator, 5'-phosphorylated, 2'-5' linked oligoadenylates (2-5A), RNase L degrades single-stranded viral and cellular RNAs and thus plays an important role in the antiviral and antiproliferative functions of IFNs. In recent years, evidence has revealed that RNase L displays a broad range of biological roles which are summarized in this review.

Mapped Overland Distance Of Paleotsunami High-Velocity Inundation N Back-Barrier Wetlands Of The Central Cascadia Margin, U.S.A, Robert B. Schlichting, Curt D. Peterson
Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Investigations of back-barrier, open-coastal plain settings have been used to establish minimum inundation distances of prehistoric tsunamis produced by great subduction zone earthquakes in the central Cascadia margin. Distinctive sand sheets were characterized at four localities within the central Cascadia margin, a shoreline distance of about 250 km. The sand sheets vary in thickness from 0.2 to 25 cm. They thin in the landward direction and consist of well-sorted beach sand that fines upsection. Many of the sand sheets include capping layers of organic-rich detritus, as well as assimilated mud rip-up clasts and soil litter. Marine diatoms and bromine (i.e., …

Math Modeling In Educational Research: An Approach To Methodological Fallacies, Bakhtiar S. Varaki, Lorna Earl
Math Modeling In Educational Research: An Approach To Methodological Fallacies, Bakhtiar S. Varaki, Lorna Earl
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Math modeling is currently at the focus of educational methodologists' attention. However, little is known about the extent to which principles of the math modeling lead to methodological fallacies in educational research. The main purpose of this paper is to explore the nature and principles of math modeling and to examine its application in educational research according to transcendental realism theory. The conclusion of the article suggests some methodological fallacies in educational research. Finally, the implications of the fallacies in educational research are considered.

Publications and Research
The authors have done an analysis of meteorological data which may add to the growing body of information addressing the cause or causes of recent global warming. If an augmented greenhouse effect, due to increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations, has been a significant factor producing global warming, then this should be indicated by an increase in the interval of time between the time of maximum insolation, and the time of maximum surface temperature, as well as a decrease in the interval of time between the time of minimum insolation and the time of minimum surface temperature, in the mid latitudes. …

Tracing Individual Public Transport Customers From An Anonymous Transaction Database, G. Tseytin, M. Hofmann, M. O'Mahony, D. Lyons
Journal of Public Transportation
Data mining concepts are used frequently throughout the transportation research sector. This article examines the concept of the market basket technique as a means of gaining more insight into public transport users’ demands. The article proposes a method that uses various data attributes of passenger records to infer the same customer in a different week (i.e., attempts to track the same customer from week to week). The general idea behind the measure is that if two records are considered similar, ideally every trip in one customer record should have a close counterpart in the other record. The research develops a …

A Multidisciplinary Approach Toward Improving Bus Schedule Readability, Darius Sollohub, Anand Tharanathan
Journal of Public Transportation
Printed schedules are critical to mass transit mobility, perhaps no more so than to bus transit users who often embark from locations where information is not provided. For economic reasons, they also rely heavily on transit. Schedules are their lifeline. After becoming concerned with the readability of its bus schedules, New Jersey Transit (NJT) enlisted an interdisciplinary research and design team from the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) to analyze, redesign, and test the agency’s bus timetables over an 18-month period beginning in 2003. The process included precedent research, community outreach, graphic design, laboratory testing, and survey methods. It …

A Dss Framework For Advanced Traffic Signal Control System Investment Planning, Houng Y. Soo, Dusan Teodorovic, John Collura
Journal of Public Transportation
This article presents ongoing research on the initial development of a decision support system (DSS) framework for integrated emergency vehicle preemption and transit priority system investment planning. A conceptual intelligent DSS framework provides a holistic framework to perform analytical assessments of integrated emergency vehicle preemption and transit priority systems. Three analytical tools are presented for incorporation into future DSS design: the first addresses the potential impact of transit travel time reduction on transit operating costs; the second addresses the potential impact of reduced emergency vehicle crashes at signalized intersections on fire and rescue operating costs; and the third integrates fuzzy …

Relativistic Corrections To A Generalized Sum Rule, P.T. Leung, H. Sinky
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Relativistic corrections to a previously established generalized sum rule are obtained using the Foldy-Wouthysen transformation. This sum rule derived previously by Wang [Phys. Rev. A 60, 262 (1999)] for a nonrelativistic system contains both the well-known Thomas-Reiche-Kuhn and Bethe sum rules, for which relativistic corrections have been obtained in the literature. Our results for the generalized formula will be applied to recover several results obtained previously in the literature, as well as to another sum rule whose relativistic corrections will be obtained.
