Digital Image Ballistics From Jpeg Quantization, Hany Farid Sep 2006

Digital Image Ballistics From Jpeg Quantization, Hany Farid

Computer Science Technical Reports

Most digital cameras export images in the JPEG file format. This lossy compression scheme employs a quantization table that controls the amount of compression achieved. Different cameras typically employ different tables. A comparison of an image's quantization scheme to a database of known cameras affords a simple technique for confirming or denying an image's source. Similarly, comparison to a database of photo-editing software can be used in a forensic setting to determine if an image was edited after its original recording.

Tools And Algorithms To Advance Interactive Intrusion Analysis Via Machine Learning And Information Retrieval, Javed Aslam, Sergey Bratus, Virgil Pavlu

Computer Science Technical Reports

We consider typical tasks that arise in the intrusion analysis of log data from the perspectives of Machine Learning and Information Retrieval, and we study a number of data organization and interactive learning techniques to improve the analyst's efficiency. In doing so, we attempt to translate intrusion analysis problems into the language of the abovementioned disciplines and to offer metrics to evaluate the effect of proposed techniques. The Kerf toolkit contains prototype implementations of these techniques, as well as data transformation tools that help bridge the gap between the real world log data formats and the ML and IR data …

A Pro-Poor Framework For Enhancing Micro-Savings In Nigeria., M. C. Ononugbo, C. P. Nwosu

Bullion

Nigerians generally do not seem to have what is usually referred to as “the saving culture”. This assertion may not entirely be true as it based on information from the formal banking system without recourse to the savings activities at the informal sector of the economy. It is a fact that the informal sector of the economy is large with unrecorded transactions. Consequently, this paper attempts to examine the fundamental issues in saving and thereafter design a formal savings habit of the populace, especially the low-income group. The framework is designed to mobilise micro-savings, hitherto kept with thrift collectors and …

Mixed Oligopoly Equilibria When Firms’ Objectives Are Endogenous, Philippe De Donder, John E. Roemer Sep 2006

Mixed Oligopoly Equilibria When Firms’ Objectives Are Endogenous, Philippe De Donder, John E. Roemer

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We study a vertically differentiated market where two firms simultaneously choose the quality and price of the good they sell and where consumers also care for the average quality of the goods supplied. Firms are composed of two factions whose objectives differ: one is maximizing profit while the other maximizes revenues. The equilibrium concept we model, called Firm Unanimity Nash Equilibrium (FUNE), corresponds to Nash equilibria between firms when there is efficient bargaining between the two factions inside both firms. One conceptual advantage of FUNE is that oligopolistic equilibria exist in pure strategies, even though the strategy space (price, quality) …

Kantian Allocations, John E. Roemer Sep 2006

Kantian Allocations, John E. Roemer

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Several authors in the economics literature have referred to Kantian behavior, informally, as a kind of cooperation. We model this notion precisely, and define two kinds of Kantian allocation. An set of strategies by players is Kantian if, informally, no player would advocate that all players change their strategies in the ‘same kind of way.’ We prove existence and Pareto efficiency of Kantian allocations. The proportional solution in a production economy with a common access technology emerges as a special case. We study whether Kantian behavior can ‘resolve’ the prisoners’ dilemma and the voting paradox. It turns out that Kant’s …

Observations are reported for the first time of significant nondipole effects in the photoionization of the outer-valence orbitals of diatomic molecules. Measured nondipole angular-distribution parameters for the 3σg, 1πu, and 2σu shells of N2 exhibit spectral variations with incident photon energies from thresholds to ∼200  eV which are attributed via concomitant calculations to particular final-state symmetry waves arising from (E1)⊗(M1,E2) radiation-matter interactions first-order in photon momentum. Comparisons with previously reported K-edge studies in N2 verify linear scaling with photon momentum, accounting in part for the significantly enhanced nondipole behavior observed in inner-shell ionization …

Factors Influencing Engineering Students' Decisions To Cheat By Type Of Assessment, Honor J. Passow, Mathew J. Mayhew, Cynthia J. Finelli, Trevor S. Harding, Donald D. Carpenter

Materials Engineering

Academic dishonesty (cheating) has been prevalent on college campuses for decades, and the percentage of students reporting cheating varies by college major. This study, based on a survey of 643 undergraduate engineering majors at 11 institutions, used two parallel hierarchical multiple regression analyses to predict the frequency of cheating on exams and the frequency of cheating on homework based on eight blocks of independent variables: demographics, pre-college cheating behavior, co-curricular participation, plus five blocks organized around Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behavior (moral obligation not to cheat, attitudes about cheating, evaluation of the costs and benefits of cheating, perceived social pressures …

Mechanistic Studies On The Mononuclear ZnIi-Containing Metallo-Β-Lactamase Imis From Aeromonas Sobria, Narayan Sharma, Christine E. Hajdin, Sowmya Chandrasekar, Brian Bennett, Ke-Wu Yang, Michael W. Crowder

Physics Faculty Research and Publications

In an effort to understand the reaction mechanism of a B2 metallo-β-lactamase, steady-state and pre-steady-state kinetic and rapid freeze quench electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies were conducted on ImiS and its reaction with imipenem and meropenem. pH dependence studies revealed no inflection points in the pH range of 5.0−8.5, while proton inventories demonstrated at least 1 rate-limiting proton transfer. Site-directed mutagenesis studies revealed that Lys224 plays a catalytic role in ImiS, while the side chain of Asn233 does not play a role in binding or catalysis. Stopped-flow fluorescence studies on ImiS, which monitor changes in tryptophan fluorescence on the enzyme, …

Tc-99m Pyrophosphate Imaging Of Poloxamer-Treated Electroporated Skeletal Muscle In An In Vivo Rat Model, Kenneth L. Matthews, John N. Aarsvold, Robert A. Mintzer, Chin Tu Chen, Raphael C. Lee

Faculty Publications

Objective: This study investigates whether 99mTc pyrophosphate (PYP) imaging provides a quantitative non-invasive assessment of the extent of electroporation injury, and of the effect of poloxamer in vivo on electroporated skeletal muscle. Methods: High-voltage electrical shock was used to produce electroporation injury in an anesthetized rat's hind limb. In each experiment, the injured limb was treated intravenously by either poloxamer-188, dextran, or saline, and subsequently imaged with 99mTc PYP. The radiotracer's temporal behavior among the experimental groups was compared using curve fitting of time-activity curves from the dynamic image data. Results: The washout kinetics of 99mTc PYP changed in proportion …

Let Mn, m be the space of real n × m matrices which can be identified with the Euclidean space Rn m. We introduce continuous wavelet transforms on Mn, m with a multivalued scaling parameter represented by a positive definite symmetric matrix. These transforms agree with the polar decomposition on Mn, m and coincide with classical ones in the rank-one case m = 1. We prove an analog of Calderón's reproducing formula for L2-functions and obtain explicit inversion formulas for the Riesz potentials and Radon transforms on Mn, m. We also introduce continuous ridgelet transforms associated to matrix planes in …

We study the low-bias stabilization of active magnetic bearings (AMBs) subject to voltage saturation based on a recently proposed model for the AMB switching mode of operation. Using a forwarding-like approach, we construct a stabilizing controller of arbitrarily small amplitude and a control-Lyapunov function for the AMB dynamics. We illustrate our construction using a numerical example. © 2006 IEEE.

Seismic Evaluation Of The Cumberland River Bridges On I-24 In Western Kentucky, Wael A. Zatar, Wei-Xin Ren, Issam E. Harik

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The main objective of this study is to assess the structural integrity of the I-24 parallel bridges at the Cumberland River crossing in western Kentucky. Due to its importance, the bridge is evaluated for the 250-year event and the maximum credible 500-year event. The scope of the work included: 1) Field testing of the main bridge; 2) Finite element modeling and calibration; 3) Time-history seismic response analysis for the main spans; and 4) Seismic evaluation for both the main and the approach spans. The seismic analysis for the 250-year event indicates that the main spans of the bridge can resist …

Size And Properties Of The Narrow-Line Region In Seyfert-2 Galaxies From Spatially-Resolved Optical Spectroscopy, N. Bennert, B. Jungwiert, S. Komossa, M. Haas, R. Chini

Physics

Context. While [O III] narrow-band imaging is commonly used to measure the size of the narrow-line regions (NLRs) in active galactic nuclei (AGNs), it can be contaminated by emission from surrounding starbursts. Recently, we have shown that long-slit spectroscopy provides a valuable alternative approach to probe the size in terms of AGN photoionisation. Moreover, several parameters of the NLR can be directly accessed. Aims. We here apply the same methods developed and described for the Seyfert-2 galaxy NGC 1386 to study the NLR of five other Seyfert-2 galaxies by using high-sensitivity spatially-resolved optical spectroscopy obtained at the VLT and the …

Mapping Woody Plant Cover In Desert Grasslands Using Canopy Reflectance Modeling And Misr Data, Mark Chopping, Lihong Su, Andrea Laliberte, Albert Rango, Debra P.C. Peters, John V. Martonchik

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

A simplified geometric-optical model (SGM) was inverted using red band reflectance data acquired at 275 m in nine viewing angles from the Multiangle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) flown on NASA's Terra satellite, to provide estimates of fractional woody plant cover for large areas (over 3519 km 2) in parts of the Chihuahuan Desert in New Mexico, USA. The use of the model in these semi-arid environments was enabled by the derivation of a priori estimates of the soil/understory background reflectance response. This was made possible by determining relationships between the kernel weights from a LiSparse-RossThin model adjusted against the same MISR …
