The Effect Of Porosity On X-Ray Emission-Line Profiles From Hot-Star Winds, S. P. Owocki, David H. Cohen Sep 2006

The Effect Of Porosity On X-Ray Emission-Line Profiles From Hot-Star Winds, S. P. Owocki, David H. Cohen

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

We investigate the degree to which the nearly symmetric form of X- ray emission lines seen in Chandra spectra of early- type supergiant stars could be explained by the possibly porous nature of their spatially structured stellar winds. Such porosity could effectively reduce the bound- free absorption of X- rays emitted by embedded wind shocks, and thus allow a more similar transmission of redshifted and blueshifted emission from the back and front hemispheres, respectively. To obtain the localized self- shielding that is central to this porosity effect, it is necessary that the individual clumps be optically thick. In a medium …

USM Physics Program

We present visible and near-IR spectra of the nucleus of comet 162P/Siding Spring (also known as 2004 TU12) obtained in 2004 December, while it had no detectable coma. This is the third object observed to have intermittent cometary activity even when relatively close to the Sun. The spectra show no strong features in this wavelength range. This paucity of deep absorptions is common among low-albedo asteroids and the few comet nuclei observed in this spectral region. Marginal spectral structure is observed in the visible spectrum, and beyond 2 μm the flux from the nucleus is dominated by thermal emission. We …

Morphological And Phylogenetic Description Of An Unusual Amphidinium (Dinophyceae) Species, Tyler Cyronak, Isaac R. Santos Sep 2006

Morphological And Phylogenetic Description Of An Unusual Amphidinium (Dinophyceae) Species, Tyler Cyronak, Isaac R. Santos

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches, Lectures

Amphidinium carterae, an important harmful algal species that produces powerful antifungal and hemolytic compounds (amphidinols) and cytotoxic macrolides (amphidinolides) is ubiquitous in coastal waters. Samples from coral rubble contained an unusual and previously unreported Amphidinium (D2) with a circular outline. Genetic analysis of clone D2 of this species, involving the sequencing of large subunit (LSU) rDNA, revealed a relationship between Amphidinium sp. D2 and both A. carterae and A. massartii. However, morphological and genetic differences suggest that Amphidinium sp. D2 is not conspecific with A. carterae or A. massartii. Further studies to describe this species are presently …

The Great Plains Network (Gpn) Middleware Test Bed, Amy Apon, Gregory Monaco, Gordon Springer

Publications

GPN (Great Plains Network) is a consortium of public universities in seven mid-western states. GPN goals include regional strategic planning and the development of a collaboration environment, middleware services and a regional grid for sharing computational, storage and data resources. A major challenge is to arrive at a common authentication and authorization service, based on the set of heterogeneous identity providers at each institution. GPN has built a prototype middleware test bed that includes Shibboleth and other NMI-EDIT middleware components. The test bed includes several prototype end-user applications, and is being used to further our research into fine-grained access control …

A Multi-Agent Framework For Testing Distributed Systems, Hany Elyamany, Miriam Capretz, Luiz Fernando Capretz

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Software testing is a very expensive and time consuming process. It can account for up to 50% of the total cost of the software development. Distributed systems make software testing a daunting task. The research described in this paper investigates a novel multi-agent framework for testing 3-tier distributed systems. This paper describes the framework architecture as well as the communication mechanism among agents in the architecture. Web-based application is examined as a case study to validate the proposed framework. The framework is considered as a step forward to automate testing for distributed systems in order to enhance their reliability within …

Curriculum Materials For Elementary Reading: Shackles And Scaffolds For Four Beginning Teachers, Sheila W. Valencia, Nancy A. Place, Susan D. Martin, Pamela L. Grossman

Literacy, Language and Culture Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of this longitudinal study was to learn how beginning elementary teachers understood and used curriculum materials for teaching reading, and how, in turn, these materials shaped teachers' instruction. We followed 4 teachers who worked in markedly different school situations and were provided a variety of curriculum materials, ranging from scripted reading programs to supplemental materials without teaching guides. Data were gathered through classroom observations, interviews, and curriculum artifacts over the teachers' first 3 years on the job. Our analysis suggested that curriculum materials interacted with teachers' knowledge of reading and reading instruction, and with the contexts in which …

Harnessing The Power Of Story: Using Narrative Reading And Writing Across Content Areas, Steven Nathanson Sep 2006

Harnessing The Power Of Story: Using Narrative Reading And Writing Across Content Areas, Steven Nathanson

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This article reviews research to examine how teaching and learning are improved with the use of narrative story materials. Stories help to focus the reader's attention and build personal connection, resulting in better retention and deeper subject-matter understanding. Four key advantages of narratives cited by D. T Willingham are discussed. The effectiveness of stories is further supported by a review of research from diverse fields, including cognitive psychology, social and physical sciences, education, and communication. Suggestions and strategies for the use of narrative materials in content area settings beyond the elementary classroom are also provided.

Molecular-Wire Behavior Of Oled Materials: Exciton Dynamics In Multichromophoric Alq3-Oligofluorene-Pt(Ii)Porphyrin Triads, Victor A. Montes, Cesar Perez-Bolıvar, Neeraj Agarwal, Joseph Shinar, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr. Sep 2006

Molecular-Wire Behavior Of Oled Materials: Exciton Dynamics In Multichromophoric Alq3-Oligofluorene-Pt(Ii)Porphyrin Triads, Victor A. Montes, Cesar Perez-Bolıvar, Neeraj Agarwal, Joseph Shinar, Pavel Anzenbacher Jr.

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Donor-bridge-acceptor triads consisting of the Alq3 complex, oligofluorene bridge, and PtII tetraphenylporphyrin (PtTPP) were synthesized. The triads were designed to study the energy level/distance-dependence in energy transfer both in a solution and in solid state. The materials show effective singlet transfer from the Alq3-fluorene fluorophore to the porphyrin, while the triplet energy transfer, owing to the shorter delocalization of triplet excitons, appears to take place via a triplet energy cascade. Using femtosecond transient spectroscopy, the rate of the singlet−singlet energy transfer was determined. The exponential dependence of the donor−acceptor distance and the respective energy transfer rates of 7.1 …

Single-Crystal, Polarized, Raman Scattering Study Of The Molecular And Lattice Vibrations For The Energetic Material Cyclotrimethylene Trinitramine, James C. Haycraft, Lewis L. Stevens, Craig J. Eckhardt Sep 2006

Single-Crystal, Polarized, Raman Scattering Study Of The Molecular And Lattice Vibrations For The Energetic Material Cyclotrimethylene Trinitramine, James C. Haycraft, Lewis L. Stevens, Craig J. Eckhardt

Craig J. Eckhardt Publications

The single-crystal, polarized, Raman spectra for cyclotrimethylene trinitramine (RDX) have been studied at room temperature and pressure over the region of 5–3400 cm-1. While the observed Raman bands agree well with a previous Raman study, this work provides a consistent interpretation of the Raman spectra by assignment of fundamental modes, overtones, and combination bands. A total of 56 internal vibrations were observed, 36 of which were labeled as fundamental molecular vibrations. In addition, all 24 lattice optical phonons are identified. All six possible polarizations were probed to obtain the Ag, B1g, B2 …

An Investigation Of Electron Helicity Density In Bromocamphor And Dibromocamphor As A Source Of Electron Circular Dichroism, A.M. Scheer, Gordon A. Gallup, Timothy J. Gay Sep 2006

An Investigation Of Electron Helicity Density In Bromocamphor And Dibromocamphor As A Source Of Electron Circular Dichroism, A.M. Scheer, Gordon A. Gallup, Timothy J. Gay

Gordon Gallup Publications

We investigate the causes of electron-circular dichroism (ECD) in bromocamphor and dibromocamphor, focusing specifically on the electron helicity density of the target. Using electron transmission spectroscopy (ETS) and quantum chemical calculations, we have observed and assigned temporary negative ion states of bromocamphor and dibromocamphor. Further calculations were conducted to determine the helicity densities of these compounds. Large helicity densities are found in the regions of large wave function amplitude of the normally unoccupied molecular orbitals responsible for resonances in the scattering cross sections. We relate our ETS assignments and helicity density results to the chiral asymmetry data observed in electron-circular …

On The Use Of Mutation Faults In Empirical Assessments Of Test Case Prioritization Techniques, Hyunsook Do, Gregg Rothermel Sep 2006

On The Use Of Mutation Faults In Empirical Assessments Of Test Case Prioritization Techniques, Hyunsook Do, Gregg Rothermel

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Regression testing is an important activity in the software life cycle, but it can also be very expensive. To reduce the cost of regression testing, software testers may prioritize their test cases so that those which are more important, by some measure, are run earlier in the regression testing process. One potential goal of test case prioritization techniques is to increase a test suite’s rate of fault detection (how quickly, in a run of its test cases, that test suite can detect faults). Previous work has shown that prioritization can improve a test suite’s rate of fault detection, but the …

Electrostatic Properties Of Protein-Protein Complexes, Petras J. Kundrotas, Emil Alexov Sep 2006

Electrostatic Properties Of Protein-Protein Complexes, Petras J. Kundrotas, Emil Alexov

Publications

Statistical electrostatic analysis of 37 protein-protein complexes extracted from the previously developed database of protein complexes (ProtCom, http://www.ces.clemson.edu/compbio/protcom) is presented. It is shown that small interfaces have a higher content of charged and polar groups compared to large interfaces. In a vast majority of the cases the average pKa shifts for acidic residues induced by the complex formation are negative, indicating that complex formation stabilizes their ionizable states, whereas the histidines are predicted to destabilize the complex. The individual pKa shifts show the same tendency since 80% of the interfacial acidic groups were found to lower their …

Comppknots: A Framework For Parallel Prediction And Comparison Of Rna Secondary Structures With Pseudoknots, Trilce Estrada, Abel Licon, Michela Taufer Sep 2006

Comppknots: A Framework For Parallel Prediction And Comparison Of Rna Secondary Structures With Pseudoknots, Trilce Estrada, Abel Licon, Michela Taufer

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Codes for RNA structure prediction based on energy minimization are usually very time and resource intensive. For this reason several codes have been significantly simplified: in some cases they are unable to predict complex secondary structures such as pseudoknots, while at other times they are able to predict structures with reduced lengths, or they are only able to predict some elementary and simple pseudoknots. Each of the existing codes has its strengths and weaknesses. Providing scientists with tools that are able to combine the strengths of the several codes is a worthwhile objective.

To address this need, we present compPknots, …
