The New Breed Of Black South African Senior Managers: Helping South African Businesses Meet The Challenge Of A Transforming Economy, Sylvia Sloan Black, Marta A. Geletkanycz

Organization Management Journal

Blacks, while still not an integral part of the management structure in the South African economy, are making gains. As management composition changes, cultural issues will become more salient. Early senior black managers were well versed in the Anglo/American cultures due to foreign education and work experience. Future gains will likely come from internal promotion. This new breed of black managers will be more immersed in their native culture. We posit that, although conflicts between Anglo/American business customs and customs based on the African ubuntu tradition may occur, South African firms will become stronger through increased diversity in senior management …

The Growing Together Guide: A Companion Resource To The New England Environmental Finance Center/Melissa Paly Film, New England Environmental Finance Center

Smart Growth

What local leader or public official wants to be faced with an SOS the “same old story” of public discord and confrontation over growth and development in one’s community? That situation has become a problem for efforts to promote smart growth. Investments are needed in the walkable, compact, traditional‐streetscape and mixed use neighborhoods and developments that are more sustainable and healthy than sprawl, for both people and the landscape. Yet attempts at such change all too often end up mired in costly public controversy and stalemate.

The title new diquinaldine derivative, C27H24N4, forms molecular assemblies organized by intermolecular quinoline π–π stacking [3.356 (3) and 3.440 (3) Å] and both inter- and intramolecular N—H⋯N hydrogen bonds [3.039 (3)–3.104 (3) Å and 129 (2)–172 (2)°]. The combination of such interactions provides readily definable contacts that propagate along each crystallographic axis.

Assessment Into Operational Mine/Uxo Clearance Activities In Kosovo, Vera Bohle, Phil Bean

Global CWD Repository

In detail the review team conducted a systematic review of the Task Dossiers held by the EOD Management Section to determine whether appropriate actions have been undertaken to declare Dangerous Areas (DAs) as being either cleared, cancelled, or to designate the DA as being a future clearance task. Due to the limited time of the evaluation a sample of 156 Dangerous Areas or Minefields (not counting CBU strike duplicates) included in 90 different Task Dossiers were investigated through the application of an agreed methodology. The selection of Task Dossiers did not follow coincidental or average sampling procedures, but was guided …

On The Η - Κ Distribution, Saralees Nadarajah, Samuel Kotz

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

The recent paper by Yacoub et al. [1] introduces what is referred to as the η – κ distribution to describe the statistical variation of the envelope in a fast fading environment. The paper discusses several properties of the distribution. Two of the properties discussed are the nth moment, E(Pn), and the cumulative probability function (cpf), FPP (•), where P is a random variable representing the normalized envelope. The expression given for E(Pn) (see equation (10) in Yacoub et al. [1]) is a doubly infinite sum of the Gauss hypergeometric function …

Application Of Data Mining Techniques For Real-Time Crash Risk Assessment On Freeways, A. Pande, M. A. Abdel-Aty Sep 2006

Application Of Data Mining Techniques For Real-Time Crash Risk Assessment On Freeways, A. Pande, M. A. Abdel-Aty

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Data mining is the analysis of large "observational" datasets to find unsuspected relationships that might be useful to the data owner. It typically involves analysis where objectives of the mining exercise have no bearing on the data collection strategy. Freeway traffic surveillance data collected through underground loop detectors is one such "observational" database maintained for various ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) applications such as travel time prediction etc. In this research data mining process is used to relate this surrogate measure of traffic conditions with rear-end crash occurrence on freeways. Crash and dual loop detector data from 36.25-mile instrumented Interstate-4 corridor …

Good Benchmarks Are Hard To Find: Toward The Benchmark For Information Retrieval Applications In Software Engineering, Alex Dekhtyar, Jane Huffman Hayes Sep 2006

Good Benchmarks Are Hard To Find: Toward The Benchmark For Information Retrieval Applications In Software Engineering, Alex Dekhtyar, Jane Huffman Hayes

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Seven to eight years ago, the number of applications of Information Retrieval (IR) methods in Software Engineering was close to zero. These days, IR and text mining methods are accepted approaches to analysis of textual artifacts generated during the software lifcycle. The incentive to try IR methods in such analysis is strong: the field comes with a reputation for proven industrial and academic success, and some important Software Engineering problems related to textual artifacts, can be translated into an instance of a standard IR problem in a reasonably straightforward manner.

In this position paper, we observe that part of the …

Crosshole Radar Tomography In A Fluvial Aquifer Near Boise, Idaho, William P. Clement, Warren Barrash Sep 2006

Crosshole Radar Tomography In A Fluvial Aquifer Near Boise, Idaho, William P. Clement, Warren Barrash

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

To determine the distribution of heterogeneities in the saturated zone of an unconfined aquifer in Boise, ID, we compute tomograms for three adjacent well pairs. The fluvial deposits consist of unconsolidated cobbles and sands. We used a curved-ray, finite-difference approximation to the eikonal equation to generate the forward model. The inversion uses a linearized, iterative scheme to determine the slowness distribution from the first arrival traveltimes. The tomograms consist of a layered zone representing the saturated aquifer. The velocities in this saturated zone range between 0.06 to 0.10 m/ns. We use a variety of methods to assess the reliability of …

A Rough Guide To Interdisciplinarity: Graduate Student Perspectives, Jessica K. Graybill, Sarah Dooling, Vivek Shandas, John Withey, Adrienne I. Greve, Gregory L. Simon

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

A widely held belief is that only through interdisciplinarity can academics effectively address today's complex ecological problems, because these problems demand cross-disciplinary efforts and specialized knowledge from natural and social scientists. Innovative interdisciplinary research and curricula have been created to train a new generation of scientists to engage with complex issues. It seems critical that those most affected by interdisciplinary education—doctoral students—provide feedback about such innovations. Without understanding students' experiences in interdisciplinary programs, faculty will not know whether they are "getting it right" for future generations of interdisciplinarians. From our experiences as doctoral students, we provide reflections and perspectives on …

A Survey On Ontology Mapping, Namyoun Choi, Il-Yeol Song, Hyoil Han

Computer Sciences and Electrical Engineering Faculty Research

Ontology is increasingly seen as a key factor for enabling interoperability across heterogeneous systems and semantic web applications. Ontology mapping is required for combining distributed and heterogeneous ontologies. Developing such ontology mapping has been a core issue of recent ontology research. This paper presents ontology mapping categories, describes the characteristics of each category, compares these characteristics, and surveys tools, systems, and related work based on each category of ontology mapping. We believe this paper provides readers with a comprehensive understanding of ontology mapping and points to various research topics about the specific roles of ontology mapping.

Fisheries Research Report No. 158 - An Assessment Of The Blue Swimmer Crab Fishery In Geographe Bay, Lynda M. Bellchambers, K. D. Smith, D. Harris

Fisheries Research Reports

The study was undertaken to provide detailed information on blue swimmer crabs in Geographe Bay so that the recreational and commercial fishery issues could be addressed using more accurate data than was previously available. A ministerial decision that banned commercial fishing for blue swimmer crabs in Geographe Bay was made in January 2005 while this study was underway. The intention of this report was to provide a summary of information on crab stocks in the region, not to alter the current management arrangements. This report describes experimental sampling, commercial catch statistics, commercial catch monitoring and surveys of recreational fishers to …
