Lightweight In-Plane Actuated Deformable Mirrors For Space Telescopes, Michael J. Shepherd Sep 2006

Lightweight In-Plane Actuated Deformable Mirrors For Space Telescopes, Michael J. Shepherd

Theses and Dissertations

This research focused on lightweight, in-plane actuated, deformable mirrors, with the ultimate goal of developing a 20- meter light gathering aperture for space telescopes. The 0.127 meter diameter deformable mirror small scale testbed was modelled infinite elements using MSC.Nastran software and then used as a basis for a quasi-static controller. Experimental tracking of Zernike tip, tilt, and defocus modes was accomplished. The analytical solutions to plate-membrane and beam-string ordinary differential equations were developed. A simplified approach to modelling the axisymmetric cases was also presented. A novel static control strategy, the Modal Transformation Method, was developed to form Zernike surfaces within …

Slow Light With Large Fractional Delays By Spectral Hole-Burning In Rubidium Vapor, Ryan M. Camacho, Michael V. Pack, John C. Howell Sep 2006

Slow Light With Large Fractional Delays By Spectral Hole-Burning In Rubidium Vapor, Ryan M. Camacho, Michael V. Pack, John C. Howell

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

We report on the experimental realization of large fractional pulse delays in a hot, Doppler-broadened rubidium vapor. A pump laser burns a deep spectral hole in the inhomogeneously broadened vapor. The delay is shown to be widely tunable by both power broadening the resonance and frequency modulating the pump laser. The simplicity of the scheme opens up the possibility for practical optical delays and buffers.

Taking "Justice And Fairness" Seriously: Distributive Justice And The Takings Clause, Jeffrey M. Gaba Sep 2006

Taking "Justice And Fairness" Seriously: Distributive Justice And The Takings Clause, Jeffrey M. Gaba

ExpressO

Since the 1960 case of Armstrong v. United States, the Supreme Court has repeatedly stated that “the” purpose of the Takings Clause is to prevent burdens falling on individual landowners that should in “justice and fairness” be born by society as a whole. The essay argues that this embodies a concept of distributional justice and further argues that the Court has failed to adequately consider the implications of such a conception as the basis of Takings analysis. The essay, after describing the origins of the Armstrong principle, discusses four implications: first, the rejection of a rights- based conception of the …

Klum@Gtap: Introducing Biophysical Aspects Of Land-Use Decisions Into A General Equilibrium Model , Kerstin Ronneberger, Maria Berrittella, Francesco Bosello , Richard S.J. Tol Sep 2006

Klum@Gtap: Introducing Biophysical Aspects Of Land-Use Decisions Into A General Equilibrium Model , Kerstin Ronneberger, Maria Berrittella, Francesco Bosello , Richard S.J. Tol

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In this paper the global agricultural land use model KLUM is coupled to an extended version of the computable general equilibrium model (CGE) GTAP in order to consistently assess the integrated impacts of climate change on global cropland allocation and its implication for economic development. The methodology is innovative as it introduces dynamic economic land-use decisions based also on the biophysical aspects of land into a state-of-the-art CGE; it further allows the projection of resulting changes in cropland patterns on a spatially more explicit level. A convergence test and illustrative future simulations underpin the robustness and potentials of the coupled …

Participatory Approach In Decision Making Processes For Water Resources Management In The Mediterranean Basin, Carlo Giupponi, Jacopo Crimi, Jaroslav Mysiak Sep 2006

Participatory Approach In Decision Making Processes For Water Resources Management In The Mediterranean Basin, Carlo Giupponi, Jacopo Crimi, Jaroslav Mysiak

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper deals with the comparative analysis of different policy options for water resources management in three south-eastern Mediterranean countries. The applied methodology follows a participatory approach throughout its implementation and is supported by the use of three different software packages dealing with water allocation budget, water quality simulation, and Multi Criteria Analysis, respectively. The paper briefly describes the general objectives of the SMART project and then presents the three local case studies, the valuation objectives and the applied methodology - developed as a general replicable framework suitable for implementation in other decision-making processes. All the steps needed for a …

Tau-Tubulin Kinase 1 (Ttbk1), A Neuron-Specific Tau Kinase Candidate, Is Involved In Tau Phosphorylation And Aggregation, Shinji Sato, Ronald Cerny, James L. Buescher, Tsuneya Ikezu Sep 2006

Tau-Tubulin Kinase 1 (Ttbk1), A Neuron-Specific Tau Kinase Candidate, Is Involved In Tau Phosphorylation And Aggregation, Shinji Sato, Ronald Cerny, James L. Buescher, Tsuneya Ikezu

Ronald Cerny Publications

Neurofibrillary tangles, which are major pathological hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), are composed of paired helical filaments (PHFs) containing hyperphosphorylated tau. Specific kinases regulate tau phosphorylation and are closely linked to the pathogenesis of AD. We have characterized a human tau-tubulin kinase 1 (TTBK1) gene located on chromosome 6p21.1. TTBK1 is a serine/threonine/tyrosine kinase that is conserved among species and belongs to the casein kinase 1 superfamily. It is specifically expressed in the brain, especially in the cytoplasm of cortical and hippocampal neurons. TTBK1 phosphorylates tau proteins in both a Mg2+- and a Mn2+-dependent manner. Phosphopeptide …

Composition Operators With Maximal Norm On Weighted Bergman Spaces, Brent J. Carswell, Christopher Hammond Sep 2006

Composition Operators With Maximal Norm On Weighted Bergman Spaces, Brent J. Carswell, Christopher Hammond

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We prove that any composition operator with maximal norm on one of the weighted Bergman spaces is induced by a disk automorphism or a map that fixes the origin. This result demonstrates a major difference between the weighted Bergman spaces and the Hardy space H2, where every inner function induces a composition operator with maximal norm.

A Stochastic Model For Psa Levels: Behavior Of Solutions And Population Statistics, Pavel Bělík, P W A Dayananda, John T. Kemper, Mikhail M. Shvartsman

Faculty Authored Articles

This paper investigates the partial differential equation for the evolving distribution of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels following radiotherapy. We also present results on the behavior of moments for the evolving distribution of PSA levels and estimate the probability of long-term treatment success and failure related to values of treatment and disease parameters. Results apply to a much wider range of parameter values than was considered in earlier studies, including parameter combinations that are patient specific.

Comparison Of Tropospheric Ozone Columns Calculated From Mls, Omi, And Ozonesonde Data, Gary A. Morris, Bojan Bojkov, Mark R. Schoeberl, Amy Wozniak, Jerry Ziemke, Sushil Chandra, Jack Fishman, Ivanka Stajner

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Presentations

This poster shows a comparison of three derived tropospheric ozone residual (TOR) products with integrated tropospheric ozone columns from ozonesonde profile: (1) the method of Ziemke et al. (2006), (2) a modified version of Fishman et al. (2003), and (3) a trajectory mapping approach. In each case, MLS ozone profiles are integrated to the tropopause and subtracted from OMI (TOMS retrieval) total column ozone. The effectiveness of each of these techniques is examined as a function of latitude, time, and geographic region. In general, we find good agreement between the derived products and the ozonesondes, with the Fishman et al. …

Statistical Learning Of Origin-Specific Statically Optimal Individualized Treatment Rules, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Maya L. Petersen Sep 2006

Statistical Learning Of Origin-Specific Statically Optimal Individualized Treatment Rules, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Maya L. Petersen

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Consider a longitudinal observational or controlled study in which one collects chronological data over time on n randomly sampled subjects. The time-dependent process one observes on each randomly sampled subject contains time-dependent covariates, time-dependent treatment actions, and an outcome process or single final outcome of interest. A statically optimal individualized treatment rule (as introduced in van der Laan, Petersen & Joffe (2005), Petersen & van der Laan (2006)) is a (unknown) treatment rule which at any point in time conditions on a user-supplied subset of the past, computes the future static treatment regimen that maximizes a (conditional) mean future outcome …

Evaluating Thematic Units To Build Reformed Worldview, James M. Schuller Sep 2006

Evaluating Thematic Units To Build Reformed Worldview, James M. Schuller

Master of Education Program Theses

This descriptive study researched the benefits of implementing thematic units as an effective curricular approach to aid in developing and opening the minds of students, parents, teachers, and administration to the possibilities of kingdom transformation and kingdom discipleship. More importantly, this paper focused on the creation of evaluation rubrics in aiding schools in fulfilling their mission statements.

The literature review examined three things: research on the benefits of using an integrated curriculum, background information on Reformed thinking on education, and information on the use of rubrics and school accountability concerning worldview development.

The results found that thematic units are a …
