Using New Technologies For Library Instruction In Science And Engineering: Web 2.0 Applications, Virginia A. Baldwin Oct 2006

Using New Technologies For Library Instruction In Science And Engineering: Web 2.0 Applications, Virginia A. Baldwin

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

The transformational concept of Web 2.0 for libraries was a hot topic at three major conferences in June of 2006. The American Library Association (ALA), Special Libraries Association (SLA), and the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) conferences all had sessions on the subject. Not all of the focus was on sci-tech libraries. An exploration of the use of these technologies for library instruction in science and engineering fields is the emphasis for this column.

Quantum Nature Of The Big Bang: Improved Dynamics, Abhay Ashtekar, Tomasz Pawlowski, Parampreet Singh Oct 2006

Quantum Nature Of The Big Bang: Improved Dynamics, Abhay Ashtekar, Tomasz Pawlowski, Parampreet Singh

Faculty Publications

An improved Hamiltonian constraint operator is introduced in loop quantum cosmology. Quantum dynamics of the spatially flat, isotropic model with a massless scalar field is then studied in detail using analytical and numerical methods. The scalar field continues to serve as "emergent time", the big bang is again replaced by a quantum bounce, and quantum evolution remains deterministic across the deep Planck regime. However, while with the Hamiltonian constraint used so far in loop quantum cosmology the quantum bounce can occur even at low matter densities, with the new Hamiltonian constraint it occurs only at a Planck-scale density. Thus, the …

Contribution Of The Nasa Land-Cover/Land-Use Change Program To The Northern Eurasia Earth Science Partnership Initiative: An Overview, Garik Gutman

United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration: Publications

The Northern Eurasia Earth Science Partnership Initiative (NEESPI) is a rapidly growing program that involves national government agencies, academia and private organizations in the U.S., Europe, Japan and Northern Eurasia. During the last decade the Northern Eurasian region have been undergoing socioeconomic, climatic and demographic changes. The causes of these changes, the associated interactions between the land surface, the atmosphere and the surrounding ocean and the resultant impact on the sustainability of land use of the region are important topics for scientific research. The NEESPI Science Plan has been prepared as an integrated regional study to better understand these hemispheric-scale …

Enhanced Convergence And Robust Performance Of Randomized Dynamical Decoupling, Lea F. Santos, Lorenza Viola Oct 2006

Enhanced Convergence And Robust Performance Of Randomized Dynamical Decoupling, Lea F. Santos, Lorenza Viola

Dartmouth Scholarship

We demonstrate the advantages of randomization in coherent quantum dynamical control. For systems which are either time-varying or require decoupling cycles involving a large number of operations, we find that simple randomized protocols offer superior convergence and stability as compared to deterministic counterparts. In addition, we show how randomization may allow us to outperform purely deterministic schemes at long times, including combinatorial and concatenated methods. General criteria for optimally interpolating between deterministic and stochastic design are proposed and illustrated in explicit decoupling scenarios relevant to quantum information storage.

Efficient Support For Application-Specific Video Adaptation, Jie Huang Oct 2006

Efficient Support For Application-Specific Video Adaptation, Jie Huang

Dissertations and Theses

As video applications become more diverse, video must be adapted in different ways to meet the requirements of different applications when there are insufficient resources. In this dissertation, we address two sorts of requirements that cannot be addressed by existing video adaptation technologies: (i) accommodating large variations in resolution and (ii) collecting video effectively in a multi-hop sensor network. In addition, we also address requirements for implementing video adaptation in a sensor network.

Accommodating large variation in resolution is required by the existence of display devices with widely disparate screen sizes. Existing resolution adaptation technologies usually aim at adapting video …

Bilateral Teleoperation Of Mobile Robot Over Delayed Communication Network: Implementation, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Oscar Martinez-Palafox, Dongjun Lee, Mark W. Spong, I. Lopez Oct 2006

Bilateral Teleoperation Of Mobile Robot Over Delayed Communication Network: Implementation, Chaouki T. Abdallah, Oscar Martinez-Palafox, Dongjun Lee, Mark W. Spong, I. Lopez

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In a previous paper we proposed a bilateral teleoperation framework of a wheeled mobile robot over communication channel with constant time delay. In this paper we present experimental results. Our goal is to illustrate and validate the properties of the proposed scheme as well as to present practical implementation issues and the adopted solutions. In particular, the bilaterally teleoperated system is passive and the system is stable in the presence of time delay. Internet has been used as the communication channel and a buffer has been implemented to maintain a constant time delay and to handle packet order.

Design And Development Of A Software Module For Minimizing Transportation Cost, Gopalakrishna Udupi

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The goal of this project is to design and develop a software module to solve a transportation problem, relating to minimizing costs to transport finished goods from multiple origins to multiple destinations. The transportation problem will be modeled as a linear programming model, using AMPL linear programming (LP) software. A graphical user interface (GUI) will be developed to enable the user to enter the data and parameters for the transportation problem. The GUI will be developed using C# programming language within the Microsoft© .NET framework. The GUI will also enable the user to launch the AMPL module to solve the …

Targeted Maximum Likelihood Learning, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Daniel Rubin Oct 2006

Targeted Maximum Likelihood Learning, Mark J. Van Der Laan, Daniel Rubin

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Suppose one observes a sample of independent and identically distributed observations from a particular data generating distribution. Suppose that one has available an estimate of the density of the data generating distribution such as a maximum likelihood estimator according to a given or data adaptively selected model. Suppose that one is concerned with estimation of a particular pathwise differentiable Euclidean parameter. A substitution estimator evaluating the parameter of the density estimator is typically too biased and might not even converge at the parametric rate: that is, the density estimator was targeted to be a good estimator of the density and …

Breakup Of Air Bubbles In Water: Memory And Breakdown Of Cylindrical Symmetry, Nathan C. Keim, Peder Møller, Wendy W. Zhang, Sidney R. Nagel Oct 2006

Breakup Of Air Bubbles In Water: Memory And Breakdown Of Cylindrical Symmetry, Nathan C. Keim, Peder Møller, Wendy W. Zhang, Sidney R. Nagel

Physics

Using high-speed video, we have studied air bubbles detaching from an underwater nozzle. As a bubble distorts, it forms a thin neck which develops a singular shape as it pinches off. As in other singularities, the minimum neck radius scales with the time until the breakup. However, because the air-water interfacial tension does not drive the breakup, even small initial cylindrical asymmetries are preserved throughout the collapse. This novel, nonuniversal singularity retains a memory of the nozzle shape, size, and tilt angle. In the last stages, the air appears to tear instead of pinch.

Detection Of PrpCwd In Postmortem Rectal Lymphoid Tissues In Rocky Mountain Elk (Cervus Elaphus Nelsoni) Infected With Chronic Wasting Disease, Terry R. Spraker, Thomas L. Gidlewski, Aru Balachandran, Kurt C.. Vercauteren, Lynn Creekmore, Randy D. Munger

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Preclinical diagnostic tests for transmissible spongiform encephalopathies have been described for mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), using biopsy tissues of palatine tonsil, and for sheep, using lymphoid tissues from palatine tonsil, third eyelid, and rectal mucosa. The utility of examining the rectal mucosal lymphoid tissues to detect chronic wasting disease (CWD) was investigated in Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni), a species for which there is not a live-animal diagnostic test. Postmortem rectal mucosal sections were examined from 308 elk from two privately owned herds that were depopulated. The results of the postmortem rectal mucosal sections were …

A Pixel To Pixel Hyperspectral Synthetic Image Model Inter-Comparison Study, Charles R. Bostater, Luce Bassetti

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is to present simulation results comparing e a Monte Carlo Hyperspectral Simulation Model (MCHSIM) which generates synthetic images with realistic water wave surface to an iterative layered radiative transfer model used to generate hyperspectral synthetic images with realistic water wave surfaces. The Monte Carlo model is divided into 5 steps: (1) generation of the photons, (2) tracking of the photon optical path and simultaneously (3) recording of the photon's location within the water column, (4) a tabulation of the photon location or positions, and conversion to meaningful radiometric quantities and (5) a calculation and processing …

When Can Politicians Scare Citizens Into Supporting Bad Policies? A Theory Of Incentives With Fear Based Content, Arthur Lupia, Jesse O. Mennng Oct 2006

When Can Politicians Scare Citizens Into Supporting Bad Policies? A Theory Of Incentives With Fear Based Content, Arthur Lupia, Jesse O. Mennng

Department of Political Science: Hendricks Symposium

Analysts make competing claims about when and how politicians can use fear to gain support for suboptimal policies. Using a model, we clarify how common attributes of fear affect politicians’ abilities to achieve self-serving outcomes that are bad for voters. In it, a politician provides information about a threat. His statement need not be true. How citizens respond differs from most game-theoretic models – we proceed from more dynamic (and realistic) assumptions about how citizens think. Our conclusions counter popular claims about how easily politicians use fear to manipulate citizens, yield different policy advice than does recent scholarship on counterterrorism, …

Evolutionary Model Of Racial Attitude Formation Socially Shared And Idiosyncratic Racial Attitudes, Thomas Craemer Oct 2006

Evolutionary Model Of Racial Attitude Formation Socially Shared And Idiosyncratic Racial Attitudes, Thomas Craemer

Department of Political Science: Hendricks Symposium

A growing body of research in political science has uncovered evidence of a “split personality” among Americans when it comes to racial attitudes, whereby people express different attitudes in public than they personally hold. A common assumption is that people adjust their personal attitudes to conform to dominant social norms. At present, however, there is no theoretical model that could account for the emergence of racial norms that are at odds with people’s personal attitudes. This paper proposes a simple neural model of racial attitude formation that makes an important distinction between socially shared and idiosyncratic racial attitudes. Socially shared …
