In The Shadow Of Man: Questioning The Absence Of Muslim And Christian Women's Voices In Medieval Polemic Writings, Kim Wortmann Oct 2006

In The Shadow Of Man: Questioning The Absence Of Muslim And Christian Women's Voices In Medieval Polemic Writings, Kim Wortmann

Macalester Islam Journal

The purpose of this paper is to show how the rigid social structures in which both Muslim and Christian women found themselves in the middle ages prevented them from influencing the Christian-Muslim polemics of the time. The absence of women’s voices has left modern scholars unsure of their sentiments regarding their encounters with one another and with one another’s culture. In order to get an accurate account of such cross-cultural perceptions as those which may have formed between Muslims and Christians, it is necessary to hear the arguments and observations from all sides, including women and others who may have …

Quantifying Fluid Mixing With The Shannon Entropy, Marco Camesasca, Miron Kaufman, Ica Manas Zloczower Oct 2006

Quantifying Fluid Mixing With The Shannon Entropy, Marco Camesasca, Miron Kaufman, Ica Manas Zloczower

Physics Faculty Publications

We introduce a methodology to quantify the quality of mixing in various systems, including polymeric ones, by adapting the Shannon information entropy. For illustrative purposes we use particle advection of two species in a two-dimensional cavity flow. We compute the entropy by using the probability of finding a suitable chosen group/complex of particles of a given species, at a given location. By choosing the size of the group to be in direct proportion to the overall concentration of the components in the mixture we ensure that the entropic measure is maximized for the case of perfect mixing, that is, when …

Scaling The Zachman Framework A Software Development Methodology For Non-Enterprise Applications, Carla L. Thompson Oct 2006

Scaling The Zachman Framework A Software Development Methodology For Non-Enterprise Applications, Carla L. Thompson

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The software development methodology brought forth in John Zachman's System Architecture Framework can be used to design a wide range of information systems. While the Zachman Framework is very robust and typically used for developing large scale Enterprise Applications, this project will demonstrate that the framework can easily be scaled to fit a small scale non-Enterprise Application. The Zachman Framework is a six by six matrix that breaks down system requirements into cells that document the system. Each row of the Zachman Framework will be examined to determine if the documentation would be needed. A discussion about the appropriateness of …

Transverse momentum spectra of π±, p, and ¯p up to 12  GeV/c at midrapidity in centrality selected Au+Au collisions at √sNN=200  GeV are presented. In central Au+Au collisions, both π± and p(¯p) show significant suppression with respect to binary scaling at pT≳4  GeV/c. Protons and antiprotons are less suppressed than π±, in the range 1.5≲pT≲6  GeV/c. The π−/π+ and ¯p/p ratios show at most a weak pT dependence and no significant centrality dependence. The p/π ratios in central Au+Au collisions approach the values in p+p and d+Au collisions at pT≳5  GeV/c. The results at high pT indicate that the partonic …

Generalized Entanglement As A Natural Framework For Exploring Quantum Chaos, Y. S. Weinstein, L Viola Oct 2006

Generalized Entanglement As A Natural Framework For Exploring Quantum Chaos, Y. S. Weinstein, L Viola

Dartmouth Scholarship

We demonstrate that generalized entanglement (Barnum et al., Phys. Rev. A, 68 (2003) 032308) provides a natural and reliable indicator of quantum chaotic behavior. Since generalized entanglement depends directly on a choice of preferred observables, exploring how generalized entanglement increases under dynamical evolution is possible without invoking an auxiliary coupled system or decomposing the system into arbitrary subsystems. We find that, in the chaotic regime, the long-time saturation value of generalized entanglement agrees with random matrix theory predictions. For our system, we provide physical intuition into generalized entanglement within a single system by invoking the notion of extent …

Measurements of the production of forward π0 mesons from p+p and d+Au collisions at √sNN=200  GeV are reported. The p+p yield generally agrees with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. The d+Au yield per binary collision is suppressed as η increases, decreasing to ∼30% of the p+p yield at ⟨η⟩=4.00, well below shadowing expectations. Exploratory measurements of azimuthal correlations of the forward π0 with charged hadrons at η≈0 show a recoil peak in p+p that is suppressed in d+Au at low pion energy. These observations are qualitatively consistent with a saturation picture of the low-x gluon structure of heavy nuclei.

Monitoring And Correction Of Geometric Distortion In Projected Displays, Christopher O. Jaynes, Robert M. Steele Oct 2006

Monitoring And Correction Of Geometric Distortion In Projected Displays, Christopher O. Jaynes, Robert M. Steele

Computer Science Faculty Patents

A technique, and associated system and computer executable program code on a computer readable storage medium, for automatically correcting distortion of a front-projected display under observation by at least one camera. The technique may be employed in a myriad of front-projected display environments, e.g., single or multiple projectors and cameras are used. The technique includes: observing a first image, projected from at least one projector, comprising at least one target distribution of light intensities; for each conglomeration of white pixels of a difference image, compute a bounding box comprising a corresponding conglomeration of pixels in a framebuffer information of the …

Detection Of Diffuse Interstellar [O Ii] Emission From The Milky Way Using Spatial Heterodyne Spectroscopy, E. J. Mierkiewicz, R. J. Reynolds, F. L. Roesler, J. M. Harlander, K. P. Jaehnig Oct 2006

Detection Of Diffuse Interstellar [O Ii] Emission From The Milky Way Using Spatial Heterodyne Spectroscopy, E. J. Mierkiewicz, R. J. Reynolds, F. L. Roesler, J. M. Harlander, K. P. Jaehnig

Physical Sciences - Daytona Beach

Using a newly developed spatial heterodyne spectrometer (SHS), we have obtained the first radial velocity resolved emission-line profiles of diffuse [O II] 3726 and 3729 angstrom emission lines from the warm (10,000 K) ionized component of our Galaxy's interstellar medium. These [O II] lines are a principal coolant for this widespread, photoionized gas and are a potential tracer of variations in the gas temperature resulting from unidentified heating processes that appear to be acting within the Galaxy's disk and halo. By spectrally isolating for the first time Galactic [O II] from atmospheric [O II] emission, we were able to detect …

Twisted Supersymmetric Sigma Model On The Lattice, Simon Catterall, Sofiane Ghadab Oct 2006

Twisted Supersymmetric Sigma Model On The Lattice, Simon Catterall, Sofiane Ghadab

Physics - All Scholarship

In this paper we conduct a numerical study of the supersymmetric O(3) non-linear sigma model. The lattice formulation we employ was derived in \cite{sigma1} and corresponds to a discretization of a {\it twisted} form of the continuum action. The twisting process exposes a {\it nilpotent} supercharge Q and allows the action to be rewritten in Q-exact form. These properties may be maintained on the lattice. We show how to deform the theory by the addition of potential terms which preserve the supersymmetry. A Wilson mass operator may be introduced in this way with a minimal breaking of supersymmetry. We additionally …

Celebrating the Centennial of the Antiquities Act (October 9)

For 100 years, the Antiquities Act has been used by nearly every President in the 20th century to set aside and protect lands threatened with privatization and development. The list of lands first protected under the Antiquities Act – and that might never have been protected without it – is truly remarkable. Many of our most treasured national parks including the Grand Canyon, Olympic, Zion, Arches, Glacier Bay, and Acadia, began as national monuments. All told, Presidents have issued 123 proclamations setting aside millions of acres of land under the Antiquities Act.
