The Zeta Function Of A Hypergraph, Christopher K. Storm
The Zeta Function Of A Hypergraph, Christopher K. Storm
Dartmouth Scholarship
We generalize the Ihara-Selberg zeta function to hypergraphs in a natural way. Hashimoto's factorization results for biregular bipartite graphs apply, leading to exact factorizations. For $(d,r)$-regular hypergraphs, we show that a modified Riemann hypothesis is true if and only if the hypergraph is Ramanujan in the sense of Winnie Li and Patrick Solé. Finally, we give an example to show how the generalized zeta function can be applied to graphs to distinguish non-isomorphic graphs with the same Ihara-Selberg zeta function.

Microfabrication And Evaluation Of Planar Thin-Film Microfluidic Devices, Bridget Ann Peeni
Microfabrication And Evaluation Of Planar Thin-Film Microfluidic Devices, Bridget Ann Peeni
Theses and Dissertations
Over the past 15 years, research in the field of microfluidics has rapidly gained popularity. By seeking to miniaturize and automate separation-based analysis, microfluidic research seeks to improve current methods through decreased cost, analysis time, and sources of contamination. My work has focused on developing a novel fabrication method, based on standard microfabrication techniques, to create thin-film microfluidic devices. This microfabrication format makes it possible to generate devices that provide high efficiencies, enable mass fabrication, and provide a platform capable of integrating the microfluidic and electronic components necessary for a micro-total analysis system (μ-TAS). Device fabrication combines the processes of …

Distance-Based Genome Rearrangement Phylogeny, Li-San Wang, Tandy Warnow, Bernard M.E. Moret, Robert K. Jansen, Linda A. Raubeson
Distance-Based Genome Rearrangement Phylogeny, Li-San Wang, Tandy Warnow, Bernard M.E. Moret, Robert K. Jansen, Linda A. Raubeson
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
Evolution operates on whole genomes through direct rearrangements of genes, such as inversions, transpositions, and inverted transpositions, as well as through operations, such as duplications, losses, and transfers, that also affect the gene content of the genomes. Because these events are rare relative to nucleotide substitutions, gene order data offer the possibility of resolving ancient branches in the tree of life; the combination of gene order data with sequence data also has the potential to provide more robust phylogenetic reconstructions, since each can elucidate evolution at different time scales. Distance corrections greatly improve the accuracy of phylogeny reconstructions from DNA …
Preliminary Finite Element Modeling Of A Piezoelectric Actuated Marine Propulsion Fin, Andrew Streett
Preliminary Finite Element Modeling Of A Piezoelectric Actuated Marine Propulsion Fin, Andrew Streett
Theses
New technologies surrounding composite materials and autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) design have led to numerous studies involving the marine propulsion for these AUVs. AUVs traditionally are classified as highly efficient, payload capable, and can be utilized as reconnaissance or surveillance vehicles. Undullatory and oscillatory propulsion devices have been conceived to replace the present propulsion technologies, of propellers, with highly maneuverable, efficient, and quiet propulsion systems. Undullatory and oscillatory propulsion has been around for centuries employed by aquatic life, but only recently have the mini-technologies been available to present such propulsion devices economically and with enough materials research as to mimic …

When Is Employee Blogging Protected By Section 7 Of The Nlra?, Katherine M. Scott
Duke Law & Technology Review
The National Labor Relations Act forbids employers from retaliating against certain types of employee speech or intimidating those who engage in it. This iBrief examines how blogging fits into the current statutory framework and recommends how the National Labor Relations Board and the courts should address the unique features of employee blogs.

Tomorrow's Library: The Building, Online Access, And Classroom, Michael Kazanjian
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
In tomorrow's library, students, teachers, and the public will increasingly partner with librarians. The public can become better acquainted with recorded knowledge. Academicians including students can search for recorded specialized and general thought contained on shelves in a building. Online technology will extend access as needed. Classrooms will extend the nature of recorded specialized and general thought as students, teachers, and librarians engage in recording and updating information in specific fields and liberal arts. Online technology to course content can allow anyone, anywhere, anytime to learn what class sessions are recording. Online and classroom capabilities empower people to learn and …
Philosophical Views About Digital Information And Relational Schemata, Markos Dendrinos
Philosophical Views About Digital Information And Relational Schemata, Markos Dendrinos
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The nature and organization of digital information are examined from a philosophical point of view. A Platonic model is first suggested, based on both the Platonic allegory of the two worlds and the hypothesis of the informationised universe. Ancient classification schemata are presented in terms of the relationship types involved, concluding with an attempt to view the semantically rich web management system as an extended Platonic model.

Effect Of Cooperative, Competitive, And Individual Use Of Self Instruction Method (Sim) On Learners' Achievement In Library Skills, Ebong Nyama Nkebem, Henry Itohowo
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Self instruction is an instructional technique that is gaining popularity among teachers. Using this technique, students use instructional materials prepared by their teachers. Three approaches – cooperation, competition, and individual approaches were tested on randomly-assigned groups of students. A one-way Anova showed a significant differential effect for this instructional technique on academic achievement in library skills.

The Free Energy Of Dissociation Of Oligomeric Structure In Phycocyanin Is Not Linear With Denaturant, Katie L. Thoren, Katelyn B. Connell, Taylor E. Robinson, David D. Shellhamer, Margaret S. Tammaro, Yvonne Gindt
Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Using SEC HPLC and fluorescence anisotropy, absorption spectra were assigned to the specific oligomeric structures found with phycocyanin. The absorption spectra were used to quantify the population of each oligomeric form of the protein as a function of both urea concentration and temperature. Phycocyanin hexamers dissociate to trimers with equilibrium constants of 10 -6 to 10-5. Phycocyanin trimers dissociate to monomers with equilibrium constants of 10-15 to 10-12. Both dissociation constants increase linearly with increasing urea concentration, and ΔG° values calculated from the equilibrium constants fit best with an exponential function. Our findings appear in contrast with the commonly used …

Analysis Of Layered Social Networks, Jonathan T. Hamill
Analysis Of Layered Social Networks, Jonathan T. Hamill
Theses and Dissertations
Prevention of near-term terrorist attacks requires an understanding of current terrorist organizations to include their composition, the actors involved, and how they operate to achieve their objectives. To aid this understanding, operations research, sociological, and behavioral theory relevant to the study of social networks are applied, thereby providing theoretical foundations for new methodologies to analyze non-cooperative organizations, defined as those trying to hide their structure or are unwilling to provide information regarding their operations. Techniques applying information regarding multiple dimensions of interpersonal relationships, inferring from them the strengths of interpersonal ties, are explored. A layered network construct is offered that …
An Auditory Classifier Employing A Wavelet Neural Network Implemented In A Digital Design, Jonathan Hughes
An Auditory Classifier Employing A Wavelet Neural Network Implemented In A Digital Design, Jonathan Hughes
Theses
This thesis addresses the problem of classifying audio as either voice or music. The goal was to solve this problem by means of digital logic circuit, capable of performing the classification in real time. Since digital audio is essentially a discrete non-periodic timeseries, it was necessary to extract features from the audio which are suitable for classification. The discrete wavelet transform combined with a feature extraction method was found to produce such features. The task of classifying these features was found to be best performed by an artificial neural network. Collectively known as a wavelet neural network, the digital logic …
Compressional Mode Softening And Euler Buckling Patterns In Mesoscopic Beams, W. E. Lawrence, M. N. Wybourne, S. M. Carr
Compressional Mode Softening And Euler Buckling Patterns In Mesoscopic Beams, W. E. Lawrence, M. N. Wybourne, S. M. Carr
Dartmouth Scholarship
We describe a sequence of Euler buckling instabilities associated with the transverse modes of a mesoscopic beam subjected to compressional strain. As the strain is increased, successively higher normal mode frequencies are driven to zero; each zero signals an instability in the corresponding normal mode that can be realized if all lower instabilities are suppressed by constraints. When expressed in terms of the critical buckling modes, the potential energy functional takes the form of a multimode Ginzburg–Landau system that describes static equilibria in the presence of symmetry breaking forces. This model is used to analyse the complex equilibrium shapes that …
Is There A Correlation Between Scholarly Productivity, Scholarly Influence And Teaching Effectiveness In American Law Schools? An Empirical Study, Benjamin H. Barton
Is There A Correlation Between Scholarly Productivity, Scholarly Influence And Teaching Effectiveness In American Law Schools? An Empirical Study, Benjamin H. Barton
ExpressO
This empirical study attempts to answer an age-old debate in legal academia: whether scholarly productivity helps or hurts teaching. The study is of an unprecedented size and scope. It covers every tenured or tenure-track faculty member at 19 American law schools, a total of 623 professors. The study gathers four years of teaching evaluation data (calendar years 2000-03) and creates an index for teaching effectiveness. This index was then correlated against five different measures of research productivity. The first three measure each professor's productivity for the years 2000-03. These productivity measures include a raw count of publications and two weighted …
Complete And Scalable Multi-Robot Planning In Tunnel Environments, Mike Peasgood, John Mcphee, Christopher M. Clark
Complete And Scalable Multi-Robot Planning In Tunnel Environments, Mike Peasgood, John Mcphee, Christopher M. Clark
Computer Science and Software Engineering
This paper addresses the challenging problem of finding collision-free trajectories for many robots moving to individual goals within a common environment. Most popular algorithms for multi-robot planning manage the complexity of the problem by planning trajectories for robots sequentially; such decoupled methods may fail to find a solution even if one exists. In contrast, this paper describes a multi-phase approach to the planning problem that guarantees a solution by creating and maintaining obstacle-free paths through the environment as required for each robot to reach its goal. Using a topological graph and spanning tree representation of a tunnel or corridor environment, …
