Just Delivering The News Or Something More? How The Mass Media Influence Public Opinion And Public Perception, Tamara D. Marashlian Sep 2006

Just Delivering The News Or Something More? How The Mass Media Influence Public Opinion And Public Perception, Tamara D. Marashlian

Modern Psychological Studies

The media, which include radio, television and newspapers, have become a crucial part of society as it provides the public with a variety of information on a daily basis. As a result, the media can potentially influence public opinion and public perception. This review examines the current research on how the media are influential and, in the process, the degree to which the media are responsible for creating public opinion. Also explained is the third-person effect, defined as the belief that a person considers himself to be less influenced by the media than others. Furthermore, the review focuses on the …

Rnase L: Its Biological Roles And Regulation, Shu Ling Liang, David Quirk, Aimin Zhou Sep 2006

Rnase L: Its Biological Roles And Regulation, Shu Ling Liang, David Quirk, Aimin Zhou

Chemistry Faculty Publications

2'-5'oligoadenylate-dependent ribonuclease L (RNase L) is one of the key enzymes involved in the function of interferons (IFNs), a family of cytokines participating in innate immunity against viruses and other microbial pathogens. Upon binding with its activator, 5'-phosphorylated, 2'-5' linked oligoadenylates (2-5A), RNase L degrades single-stranded viral and cellular RNAs and thus plays an important role in the antiviral and antiproliferative functions of IFNs. In recent years, evidence has revealed that RNase L displays a broad range of biological roles which are summarized in this review.

The Case For For-Profit Charities, Eric A. Posner, Anup Malani Sep 2006

The Case For For-Profit Charities, Eric A. Posner, Anup Malani

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Nonprofit firms may not distribute profits to owners but instead must retain them or reinvest them. Nonprofits that are "charitable organizations" under § 501(c)(3) of the tax code may receive donations from individuals who are allowed to deduct their donations from their income for tax purposes. We argue that the law should not link tax benefits to corporate form in this way. There may be good arguments for recognizing the nonprofit form and good arguments for providing tax subsidies to charities or donors to charities, but there is no good argument for making those tax subsidies available only to charities …

The Martin Handcart Company At The Sweetwater: Another Look, Chad M. Orton Sep 2006

The Martin Handcart Company At The Sweetwater: Another Look, Chad M. Orton

BYU Studies

This article looks at an oft-told story of Mormon pioneers who suffered on the trail in a severe early winter storm. Most Mormons have heard of three brave eighteen-year-old men who helped the stranded handcart pioneers across the icy Sweetwater River in the winter of 1856, carrying almost everyone in the company across and eventually dying from the effects of exposure. Chad M. Orton explores various accounts of the event to determine what is verifiable and what has evolved into Mormon folklore. For example, there is evidence that there were more than three rescuers; the three rescuers traditionally named lived …

A Pro-Poor Framework For Enhancing Micro-Savings In Nigeria., M. C. Ononugbo, C. P. Nwosu

Bullion

Nigerians generally do not seem to have what is usually referred to as “the saving culture”. This assertion may not entirely be true as it based on information from the formal banking system without recourse to the savings activities at the informal sector of the economy. It is a fact that the informal sector of the economy is large with unrecorded transactions. Consequently, this paper attempts to examine the fundamental issues in saving and thereafter design a formal savings habit of the populace, especially the low-income group. The framework is designed to mobilise micro-savings, hitherto kept with thrift collectors and …

Recent Reforms In The Nigerian Banking Industry: Issues And Challenges., U. Kama

Bullion

The banking industry around the world has witnessed remarkable changes in recent decades, given t h e i n c r e a s i n g w a v e o f globalization, structural and technological changes, and integration of financial markets. As McKinnon and Shaw (1973) observed in their seminar work on the key roles of banks as propel lands of growth and development in developing economies, a feeble banking system is repressive, distortionary and dis-connect the intermediation process thereby precipitating macroeconomic instability. The paper reviews the various reforms in Nigerian banking industry since 1986 particularly the complementary …

Mixed Oligopoly Equilibria When Firms’ Objectives Are Endogenous, Philippe De Donder, John E. Roemer Sep 2006

Mixed Oligopoly Equilibria When Firms’ Objectives Are Endogenous, Philippe De Donder, John E. Roemer

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We study a vertically differentiated market where two firms simultaneously choose the quality and price of the good they sell and where consumers also care for the average quality of the goods supplied. Firms are composed of two factions whose objectives differ: one is maximizing profit while the other maximizes revenues. The equilibrium concept we model, called Firm Unanimity Nash Equilibrium (FUNE), corresponds to Nash equilibria between firms when there is efficient bargaining between the two factions inside both firms. One conceptual advantage of FUNE is that oligopolistic equilibria exist in pure strategies, even though the strategy space (price, quality) …
