Biologic Interaction And Their Identification, Tyler J. Vanderweele, James Robins Sep 2006

Biologic Interaction And Their Identification, Tyler J. Vanderweele, James Robins

COBRA Preprint Series

The definitions of a biologic interaction and causal interdependence are reconsidered in light of a sufficient-component cause framework. Various conditions and statistical tests are derived for the presence of biologic interactions. The conditions derived are sufficient but not necessary for the presence of a biologic interaction. Through a series of examples it is made evident that in the context of monotonic effects, but not in general, the conditions which are derived are closely related but not identical to effect modification on the risk difference scale.

A Theory Of Sufficient Cause Interactions, Tyler J. Vanderweele, James M. Robins Sep 2006

A Theory Of Sufficient Cause Interactions, Tyler J. Vanderweele, James M. Robins

COBRA Preprint Series

Sufficient-component causes are discussed within the potential outcome framework so as to formalize notions of sufficient causes, synergism and sufficient cause interactions. Doing so allows for the derivation of counterfactual conditions and statistical tests for detecting the presence of sufficient cause interactions. Under the assumption of monotonic effects, more powerful statistical tests for sufficient cause interactions can be derived. The statistical tests derived for sufficient cause interactions are compared with and contrasted to interaction terms in standard statistical models.

Locus Ceruleus Regulates Sensory Encoding By Neurons And Networks In Waking Animals, David M. Devilbiss, Michelle E. Page, Barry D. Waterhouse Sep 2006

Locus Ceruleus Regulates Sensory Encoding By Neurons And Networks In Waking Animals, David M. Devilbiss, Michelle E. Page, Barry D. Waterhouse

Department of Neurosurgery Faculty Papers

Substantial evidence indicates that the locus ceruleus (LC)–norepinephrine (NE) projection system regulates behavioral state and state-dependent processing of sensory information. Tonic LC discharge (0.1–5.0 Hz) is correlated with levels of arousal and demonstrates an optimal firing rate during good performance in a sustained attention task. In addition, studies have shown that locally applied NE or LC stimulation can modulate the responsiveness of neurons, including those in the thalamus, to nonmonoaminergic synaptic inputs. Many recent investigations further indicate that within sensory relay circuits of the thalamus both general and specific features of sensory information are represented within the collective firing patterns …

The Rise And Fall Of Private Sector Unionism: What Next For The Nlra?, Jeffrey M. Hirsch, Barry T. Hirsch Sep 2006

The Rise And Fall Of Private Sector Unionism: What Next For The Nlra?, Jeffrey M. Hirsch, Barry T. Hirsch

ExpressO

In this Article, we ask whether the National Labor Relations Act, enacted over 70 years ago, can remain relevant in a competitive economy where nonunion employer discretion is the dominant form of workplace governance. The best opportunity for the NLRA’s continued relevance is the modification of its language and interpretation to enhance worker voice and participation in the nonunion private sector, without imposing undue costs on employers. Examples of such reforms include narrowing the NLRA’s company union prohibition; implementing a conditional deregulation system that relies on consent by an independent employee association; changing the labor law default to some form …

Free, Confidential Depression Screening At Governors State University, Office Of Public Affairs

Press Releases

The statistics are astounding. More than 4 million adults in the United States suffer from anxiety disorder. An estimated one in ten Americans suffers from depression each year. More than five million American adults experience Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and one in every one hundred adults are affected by Bipolar Disorder.

An Integral Philosophy And Definition Of Nursing: Implications For A Unifying Meta-Theory Of Nursing, Olga F. Jarrin Sep 2006

An Integral Philosophy And Definition Of Nursing: Implications For A Unifying Meta-Theory Of Nursing, Olga F. Jarrin

School of Nursing Scholarly Works

A unifying meta-theory of nursing is suggested, building from the foundation of Ken Wilber’s AQAL (integral) framework. A definition of nursing as situated caring is presented. Historical discussion of contemporary nursing epistemology and theory are provided for context. Implications for practice, education, and research are discussed. A unifying meta-theory of nursing is needed to most benefit from the diversity in nursing education, practice, theory and research. A unifying meta-theory will enable nurses at both the practical and academic levels to appreciate the complexity and simplicity of nursing, allowing them to articulate confidently what we do and why we do it.

Air Pollution Costs In Ukraine, Elena Strukova, Alexander Golub, Anil Markandya Sep 2006

Air Pollution Costs In Ukraine, Elena Strukova, Alexander Golub, Anil Markandya

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The paper presents estimation of the health losses from urban air pollution in Ukraine. The methodology developed by US EPA and adjusted in Russia for Eastern European transition countries was applied for health risk assessment. PM2.5 was identified as the major source of human health risk, based on experience from the Russian studies. In the absence of reliable computed concentrations of PM2.5, the study was based on monitoring data of total suspended particle (TSP) emissions in Ukraine. Additional cases of mortality and morbidity were calculated based on reporting data on TSP concentration that was recalculated into PM2.5. Then the concentration–response …

Estimating The Value Of Safety With Labor Market Data: Are The Results Trustworthy?, Beat Hintermann , Anna Alberini, Anil Markandya Sep 2006

Estimating The Value Of Safety With Labor Market Data: Are The Results Trustworthy?, Beat Hintermann , Anna Alberini, Anil Markandya

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We use a panel dataset of UK workers to look for evidence of compensating wage differentials for workplace risk. Risk data are available at the four-digit industry level or at the three-digit occupation level. We discuss various econometric problems associated with the hedonic wage approach, namely measurement error, instability of the estimates to specification changes, and endogeneity. We find that if we assume a classical measurement error, the true risk signal would be completely drowned out in our data, which would imply a severe downward bias of the OLS coefficient on risk. But this prediction is at odds with our …

Speech Communication: A Case To Make Speech A Required Course For Secondary Graduation, Emily K. Campbell

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The research project examines how courses in speech communication tend to affect students. The author specifically considers how courses in speech affect student test scores, understanding in other core courses, employability in the work force, preparation for college, and self worth. Prior studies, testimonials, and an informal study from the 2004 National Forensic League National Tournament are used to support the case. The intent of the presentation is to persuade school officials to start, strengthen, or save local forensics programs.

Setting Up Information Technology Structures For Trade Unions, Harvey Hecht Sep 2006

Setting Up Information Technology Structures For Trade Unions, Harvey Hecht

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Trade Unions also know as Labor Unions are non-profit organizations whose purpose is to represent workers in their work place, negotiate collective bargaining agreements, and enforce those agreements while representing its membership. In the past three decades, United States Trade Union populations have been dropping. One of the reasons behind the reduction is the lack of leadership to keep infrastructure contemporary and able to meet the changing pace of business. International Union has been working on different projects in an effort to change how they do business. One approach International Union exercised is upgrading its larger premier locals such as …

On Monday, 19 July, and Tuesday, 20 July 2004, the air over Houston, Texas,
appeared abnormally hazy. Transport model results and data from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS), the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS), the Measurement of Ozone by Airbus In-service airCraft (MOZAIC) experiment, and the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) indicate that an air mass originating on 12 July 2004 over forest fires in eastern Alaska and western Canada arrived in Houston about 1 week later. Ozonesonde data from Houston on 19 and 20 July show elevated ozone at the surface (>125 ppbv) and even higher concentrations aloft …
