Smoke-Free Laws And Employee Turnover, Ellen J. Hahn, Eric Thompson

Bureau of Business Research Publications

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of smoke-free laws on employee turnover and training costs in one large national restaurant chain. The public health benefits of smoke-free laws are well-known. If all workplaces in the united states implemented smoke-free policies, about 178,000 smokers would stop smoking while those who continued would consume 10 billion fewer cigarettes per year.1 As information about the health consequences of exposure to secondhand smoke has increased over the past 30 years,2-5 many state and local governments have enacted laws to restrict smoking. Today, over 2,300 local communities and 17 …

Oped: Join Us For Another Mississippi Milestone, Robert Khayat

University of Mississippi News

Very early in Mississippi's history, our leaders made a commitment to educating the state's young people by creating the University of Mississippi. The Legislature issued our charter in 1844, and we opened our doors to 80 students in 1848. Since then, we have provided exceptional educational opportunities. During our 158 years, we have also mirrored the circumstances and challenges our state has confronted.

A Fourier Transformation Based Method To Mine Peptide Space For Antimicrobial Activity, Vijayaraj Nagarajan, Navodit Kaushik, Beddhu Murali, Chaoyang Zhang, Sanyogita Lakhera, Mohamed O. Elasri, Youping Deng

Faculty Publications

Background

Naturally occurring antimicrobial peptides are currently being explored as potential candidate peptide drugs. Since antimicrobial peptides are part of the innate immune system of every living organism, it is possible to discover new candidate peptides using the available genomic and proteomic data. High throughput computational techniques could also be used to virtually scan the entire peptide space for discovering out new candidate antimicrobial peptides.

Result

We have identified a unique indexing method based on biologically distinct characteristic features of known antimicrobial peptides. Analysis of the entries in the antimicrobial peptide databases, based on our indexing method, using Fourier transformation …
