Desmoid tumors are soft tissue proliferations with a tendency to invade surrounding tissues and, when occurring in the mesentery, can present with obstructive symptoms, pain, or organ damage. This report presents a case of a 33-year-old male with no medical history or contributory family history who developed systemic infectious symptoms related to cystic necrosis of a desmoid tumor. The cystic necrosis suggests that the tumor may have grown so rapidly that it outgrew its vascular supply before causing any symptoms, highlighting the diverse range of presentations and emphasizing individualized treatment plans.

Faith, Formation, And Sport: How Diocesan Athletic Associations Articulate Catholic Mission, Samuel Naab
Journal of Catholic Education
As Catholic schools navigate declining enrollment, expanding school choice policies, and increasing specialization in youth athletics, diocesan Catholic youth athletic associations represent an understudied site of mission articulation and identity formation within Catholic education. This study examines the organizational composition of diocesan athletic associations in the United States and analyzes how these organizations construct and communicate mission and Catholic identity through governing documents. Using structural topic modeling, the study analyzes 81 mission-oriented statements drawn from publicly available handbooks, bylaws, and policy manuals of 51 diocesan athletic associations. Results indicate that mission-oriented language across organizations reflects a consistent set of value-based …

A Comparative Analysis Of Educator And Parent Perspectives Of Catholic High School Athletics, Kevin J. Calkins
Journal of Catholic Education
This study surveyed parents to compare their perceptions of the role of athletics in the Catholic high school environment with those of educators, and to examine the degree to which athletics influences parental enrollment decisions. Educators and parents mostly agree on the role of interscholastic athletics in Catholic high schools. The most noticeable difference between educators and parents is about the perceived role of athletics in student formation. While the strength and health of a Catholic high school’s athletic program are important considerations when parents choose a Catholic high school for their child, the results indicate that academic quality is …

Trauma-Informed Coaching: An Application Of Catholic Social Teaching To Formation And Healing Through Sport, Kristin K. Sheehan, Peter Piscitello, Elaine Cassidy
Journal of Catholic Education
Mission-driven athletic programs aim to form the whole athlete—physically, emotionally, socially, morally, and spiritually. A critical component of this mission is equipping coaches to serve as ministers of the Church while embracing trauma-informed practices. This paper introduces the rationale, process, and techniques for trauma-informed coaching as a research-based approach to supporting athlete mental health. Grounded in Catholic Social Teaching, this framework emphasizes community, participation, and the dignity of the human person, particularly care for the vulnerable. Drawing on neuroscientific and psychological research on trauma alongside Church documents and papal pronouncements, the paper demonstrates how trauma-informed coaching fosters healing and resilience …

Sporting Educational Pedagogy In Catholic Western Europe In The 19th And 20th Centuries: What We Can Learn From The Past, Dries Vanysacker
Journal of Catholic Education
This article presents a historiographical overview of the development of the role of sport within the Western European Catholic education in the 20th century. Since the late 19th century, combining gymnastics with new sport disciplines was a huge challenge for Catholic schools. Within the 20th century, changing political situations and educational policies by governments continuously influenced the Catholic education theories and practice. Catholic schools also depended on the Holy See’s policy concerning education and its attitude toward sport. As the Catholic pedagogy is part of a broader theological concept of the human being, and the latter changed in the 1950s/1960’s, …

Sport, Human Flourishing And The Common Good: A Jesuit Perspective, Patrick M. Kelly S.J.
Journal of Catholic Education
The author interprets humanist and early Jesuit education inspired by the Spiritual Exercises through the lens of the flow psychology theory of Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi to highlight that they bring about differentiation – the development of the different interests, skills, dimensions of the person – and integration – in a way that is connected to community and fosters the common good. The inclusion of physical education and sports in the humanist and early Jesuit schools – the first instance of it in Catholic schools – was influenced by longer traditions which emphasized the unity of the person and a “play ethic”, …

Admiration Without Worship: The Fallibilization Of The Hero And The Moral Logic Of Modernity, Mohsen Askari
Admiration Without Worship: The Fallibilization Of The Hero And The Moral Logic Of Modernity, Mohsen Askari
Heroism Science
This article develops the concept of the fallibilization of the hero, defined as the cultural process through which admired figures become visible as flawed, historically situated, morally complex human beings. It argues that modernity does not abolish heroism but changes the conditions under which it can be believed. In hagiographic systems, heroes are protected from contradiction and presented as pure or destined; in modern‑critical systems, greatness can coexist with error, weakness, and compromise. The article situates fallibilization within debates on heroism science, hagiography, charismatic authority, collective memory, and modern biography, proposing a four‑part typology of heroic forms: hagiographic, developmental, fallibilized, …

Urban Green Spaces Landscape Design For Improving The Cultural Ecosystem Services Satisfaction Of Older People: Translating Maxent Model Outputs Into Spatial Design And Design Code Refinement, Huan Zhong, Takashi Machimura, Oyuntselmeg Enkhbat
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
Population aging and urbanization increasingly affect the well-being of older people. Urban green spaces (UGSs) can enhance their well-being through cultural ecosystem services (CESs), making CES assessment essential for inclusive cities. However, most studies employing the Maxent model for CES spatial assessment have mainly focused on predicting CES distributions, with limited efforts to translate model outputs into actionable spatial designs for improving CES satisfaction. This study aimed to propose and assess the landscape designs in UGSs informed by the Maxent model, and then to refine the existing National Park Design Code. The findings firstly revealed the spatial distributions of CES …

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an endocrine disorder leading to varied health complications, such as high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, infertility, and depression among women in the United States. Most studies have focused on managing the physical aspects of PCOS. Limited research to date has been conducted to determine the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation women living with PCOS harness to navigate the physical, psychosocial, and access to care in New Jersey, which are contributors to positive social change. This basic qualitative study utilized semistructured open-ended questions to determine the experiences and perspectives of women between the ages of 18 …
Antiterrorism Policies And Curbing Youth Involvement In Violent Extremism In Nigeria, Timothy Melaye
Antiterrorism Policies And Curbing Youth Involvement In Violent Extremism In Nigeria, Timothy Melaye
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Nigeria continues to face significant challenges from extremist groups such as Boko Haram, unidentified militia groups, and bandits. The radicalization of youths has played a central role in the country's ongoing violent extremism and general insecurity. Efforts to curb youth radicalization remain largely unsuccessful and pose a major challenge in the country. The existing literature on curbing youth violent extremism focuses on the use of force, while other scholars argue for a complex interplay among economic, social, political, and environmental factors. They also considered that high illiteracy, lack of religious understanding, poverty, unemployment, psychological factors, and unstable family environments contribute …

Can The Safety Net Support Families Through Childbirth?, Hyojeong Kim, Colleen Heflin, Taryn Morrissey
Center for Policy Research
Childbirth is a life event that often disrupts maternal employment and household earnings just as family expenses increase. In the United States, families do not have access to a national paid parental leave program and must rely on a patchwork of safety net programs that were not designed specifically to support households during pregnancy and the immediate postpartum period. This brief uses linked administrative data from the Virginia Longitudinal Data System (2016–2021) to describe changes in household earnings and social welfare benefits before and after childbirth among low-income mothers receiving the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Temporary Assistance for …

Combined Estimation Of Herpetofauna And Avian Detection Frequency In A Suburban Ecosystem In As A Function Of Land Use Development, Isabelle L. Barnes, Jake Gerardi, John E. Quinn
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
Biodiversity is under threat as natural and semi-natural ecosystems continue to decrease in frequency and extent as a function of increased urban development, among other drivers. However, it has become clear that some levels of urban development can continue to support some biodiversity. However, it is not clear how species within different taxonomic groups may respond to similar types and extents of development. Thus, data are needed to assess relationships between urban development and multi-taxa detection patterns. To begin to address this gap, we conducted a concurrent analysis of anuran and avian diversity along an urban-to-peri-urban transect in Greenville, South …

The Effect Of Anthropogenic Food Subsidies On Coyote (Canis Latrans) Territory Size, Numi Mitchell, Kyle R. Hess, Michael W. Strohbach, Ralph Pratt
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
Context. Coyotes have confounded lethal-control efforts for over a century, initially as they preyed on livestock the Midwest rangelands in the early 1900s. In the past century, coyotes have expanded their range across the US into rural, suburban, even urban areas in the eastern US where populations are increasing along with calls for management from communities. Here we examine anthropogenic food subsidy reduction as a possible management tool for coyotes. Compelling explanations for coyote territory-size variation have both a food-availability component and a contender pressure, or competition, component. These factors also influence pack group-size. Ultimately, competition for limited food resources …

Anthropogenic Food Subsidies And Pack Counts Of Coyotes (Canis Latrans) In Rhode Island: Implications For Long-Term And Non-Lethal Population Control, Numi Mitchell, Kyle R. Hess, Michael W. Strohbach
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
Coyotes regulate fertility, population recruitment, and territory size, based on food competition, all characteristics that might be leveraged for population management initiatives. In Rhode Island, US, anthropogenic food subsidies provide important resources for coyotes. Prior work has shown that when large reliable subsidies are absent or removed, resident coyotes increase territory size. This is potentially significant to management if the expansion does not cause increases in pack size.
We used video camera traps, opportunistic photography, and observation, to make group-size counts. We looked at the influence of levels of anthropogenic food subsidization on pack size. Adult group sizes were smaller …

Species within the quinaria group of the genus Drosophila are models for ecological genetic studies on topics that include morphological diversity, color pattern development, and feeding behavior. Drosophila palustris and Drosophila subpalustris are closely related members within the quinaria species group that differ primarily in subtle morphological and behavioral traits. To support future evolutionary genomic studies in drosophilids, we completed new draft hybrid assemblies and annotations of the D. palustris and D. subpalustris genomes. We obtained a fragmented assembly for D. palustris (N50 = 874 Kb) and a near chromosome-scale D. subpalustris assembly (N50 = 27.5 Mbp). Assembly contiguity, repeat …

OBJECTIVE: Stereo-electroencephalography (SEEG) is an intracranial EEG methodology used in presurgical epilepsy evaluation to precisely delineate the epileptogenic zone and associated networks. Although established for decades, its global adoption has accelerated due to a favorable safety profile and clinical effectiveness. However, inconsistent terminology limits comparability of findings and multicenter collaboration. This guideline addresses this gap by providing standardized SEEG terminology based on international consensus.
METHODS: A working group of 41 experts appointed by the International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology (IFCN) Executive Committee used a modified Delphi process to develop standardized terminology. The process included two meetings and four Delphi rounds, …
The Invisible Crop: Harnessing Root System Architecture In Heirloom Collards For Climate-Resilient Urban Agriculture, Vincent Antonio Brazelton
The Invisible Crop: Harnessing Root System Architecture In Heirloom Collards For Climate-Resilient Urban Agriculture, Vincent Antonio Brazelton
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Growing food in urban spaces often means working within variable, resource-limited environments, creating a need for crops that can withstand heterogeneous growing conditions. Heirloom collards (Brassica oleracea var. viridis) are known for their aboveground diversity and cultural importance, but much less is known about the variation that exists belowground. This dissertation examines root system architecture (RSA) diversity across 19 historically underutilized heirloom collard accessions using a multi-scale phenotyping approach that includes controlled gel-based imaging of seedlings and 2D imaging of mature field-grown root systems. Across both seedling and mature stages, heirloom collards showed substantial variation in RSA. These differences revealed …
