The Power Of Film: A Model For The Use Of Group Cinematherapy In The Therapeutic Treatment Of Clinically Depressed Adolescents, Erin E Farrell Bowen Jan 2006

The Power Of Film: A Model For The Use Of Group Cinematherapy In The Therapeutic Treatment Of Clinically Depressed Adolescents, Erin E Farrell Bowen

Master's Theses and Capstones

The following thesis proposes a model for the use of cinematherapy as part of treatment for clinically depressed adolescents. The thesis outlines the rationale for such a model, including the relative convenience and potential benefits of using movies as a therapeutic technique. This thesis also examines the professional literature regarding the topics of cinematherapy, bibliotherapy, group therapy, therapeutic metaphor, metaphoric techniques in therapy, and adolescent depression. A model is proposed to offer a specific framework in which cinematherapy may be used in the group treatment of adolescent depression, as well as tools that may assist clinicians in monitoring treatment outcomes. …

Change In Family And Peer Adverse Life Circumstances In Relation To Juvenile Firesetting, Patrick A. Roberts Jan 2006

Change In Family And Peer Adverse Life Circumstances In Relation To Juvenile Firesetting, Patrick A. Roberts

Master's Theses and Capstones

Juvenile firesetting is a major problem causing millions of dollars worth of damage each year, and yet there is very little know about it. In order to address this lack of knowledge the present study examined the relationship between adverse life events and juvenile firesetting behavior. This relationship was examined using a sample of students from 17 public and 10 private schools in Southern Australia (2105 males, 1629 females). Data were collected from the students during grade 8 (mean age of 13) using the Youth Assessment Checklist, and again during grades 9 and 10.

Adverse life events were found to …

Elite Perceptions And The Adoption Of An Extremist Policy Of Genocide: A Comparative Case Study Of Armenia And Rwanda, Nicole Powell Jan 2006

Elite Perceptions And The Adoption Of An Extremist Policy Of Genocide: A Comparative Case Study Of Armenia And Rwanda, Nicole Powell

Master's Theses and Capstones

The events leading up to the genocide that occurred in Rwanda in 1994 are similar to the events that led to the genocide that occurred in the Ottoman Empire in 1915. Economic and political crises plagued both states, international pressures to democratize weighed on both states, and both states were subject to ethnic polarization. This project examines those common factors preceding the Rwandan and Armenian genocides; and looks at elite's perception of a threat to their power because of the existence of those factors. Furthermore, the paper examines the relationship between the perception of a threat to elite power and …

Power And Punishment In Nietzsche, Jacob Skinner Jan 2006

Power And Punishment In Nietzsche, Jacob Skinner

Master's Theses and Capstones

Nietzsche appears to hold contradictory views about punishment. Uncompromising in his commitment to noble ideals, Nietzsche often decries punishment as small-minded resentfulness and implores readers to look away. Though at times he describes it as an exalted flexing of the will, making the case that punishment plays a necessary role in social life. This paper argues that Nietzsche's views are not incompatible and that he holds a coherent theory of punishment which permits these clashing positions.

I argue that Nietzsche's theory of punishment is predicated as follows. Power is the objective measure of value. The single justification for punishing is …

Nuclear Power Sources And Future Space Exploration, Steven A. Mirmina, David J. Den Herder Jan 2006

Nuclear Power Sources And Future Space Exploration, Steven A. Mirmina, David J. Den Herder

Chicago Journal of International Law

In this article, we will first provide a brief explanation of what NPS is and how it works. The article will clarify how terms are used and explain some factual background so that the issues can be discussed with clarity. It will follow with a brief history of the use of NPS in space, illustrating that the United States and Russia (including the former Soviet Union) have employed various forms of NPS in space for more than forty years. Next, the focus will shift to a discussion of the international legal regimes governing NPS both in space and, to a …

Internationalizing Us Municipal Insolvency: A Fair, Equitable, And Efficient Way To Overcome A Debt Overhang, Kunibert Raffer Jan 2006

Internationalizing Us Municipal Insolvency: A Fair, Equitable, And Efficient Way To Overcome A Debt Overhang, Kunibert Raffer

Chicago Journal of International Law

Adam Smith recommended sovereign insolvency as "always the measure which is both least dishonourable to the debtor, and least hurtful to the creditor." Christopher G. Oechsli published a detailed proposal of how to adapt Chapter 11, Title 11 of the US Code, well before August 1982, the date considered by many as the official beginning of the debt crisis. After Mexico's default, repeated suggestions to emulate Chapter 11 for sovereign debtors met stiff opposition, especially from International Financial Institutions ("IFls") such as the International Monetary Fund ("IMF"). Their formalistic counterargument was that Chapter 11 did not address the problem of …

A "Fair And Expeditious" Trial: A Reappraisal Of Slobodan Milosevic's Right To Self-Representation Before The International Criminal Tribunal For The Former Yugoslavia, Constantinos Hotis Jan 2006

A "Fair And Expeditious" Trial: A Reappraisal Of Slobodan Milosevic's Right To Self-Representation Before The International Criminal Tribunal For The Former Yugoslavia, Constantinos Hotis

Chicago Journal of International Law

This Development analyzes and critiques recent cases on Milosevic's in propria persona defense. Contrary to some arguments that the assignment of counsel will aid the trial process, it contends that the ICTY cannot impose counsel because all of the reasons that it used to justify its ruling are inadequate. This Development specifically argues that the "fair and expeditious" rationale, with its emphasis on judicial management, does not legitimize the Tribunal's decision to retract Milosevic's right to self-representation. In fact, it is a poor proxy for justice and may countervail any type of fairness that the ICTY wishes to achieve in …

How Much Intellectual Property Protection Do The Newest (And Coolest) Biotechnologies Get Internationally?, Alix Weisfeld Jan 2006

How Much Intellectual Property Protection Do The Newest (And Coolest) Biotechnologies Get Internationally?, Alix Weisfeld

Chicago Journal of International Law

Since the completion of the Human Genome Project in 2000, we are already seeing changes in health care. As we better understand the genetic basis of disease, we are able to target therapies to these root causes of disease. This paper will consider how two nascent areas of genetic medicine, pharmacogenetics and biologics, interact with international intellectual property ("IP") law. Neither of these areas fits comfortably in the traditional intellectual property model we use for pharmaceuticals. Due to their growing importance, however, the implications for international law concerning these advances are great. The first section of the paper will give …

The Substantive Politics Of Formal Corporate Power, Martha T. Mccluskey Jan 2006

The Substantive Politics Of Formal Corporate Power, Martha T. Mccluskey

Buffalo Law Review

Corporations increasingly dominate the U.S. civil justice system, as Marc Galanter explains in his recent article, Planet of the APs: Reflections on the Scale of Law and its Users, 53 Buffalo L. Rev. 1369 (2006). My article builds on Galanter's discussion of corporate legal power by subjecting it to a critical legal perspective. In the conventional legal framework, corporations' privileged position appears to be an intractable puzzle, not an urgent injustice. That is because corporate power seems to be the generally necessary byproduct of a generally benign form (large, complex, legalistic organizations) or of generally benign, widely-shared normative principles (economic …

Land, Labor, And Colonial Economics In Thomas Morton's "New English Canaan", Michelle Burnham Jan 2006

Land, Labor, And Colonial Economics In Thomas Morton's "New English Canaan", Michelle Burnham

English

As long as critics have written about it, Thomas Morton's New English Canaan has been positioned as a counterhistory to William Brad ford's canonical Of Plymouth Plantation. One vein of critical reception has dismissed Morton's text as a flawed literary anomaly, effectively re peating Bradford's own befuddled and anxious response to Morton's aes thetics.1 A smaller but impassioned vein of literary criticism has, in turn, elevated Morton over Bradford on the basis of his egalitarianism, proto environmentalism, or multiculturalism avant la lettre?essentially cele brating Morton as a more laudable expression of individualism and free dom than that represented by the …

Modeling Small Business Growth, Migration Behavior, And Household Income In Appalachia: A Spatial Simultaneous Equations Approach, Gebremeskel H. Gebremariam, Tesfa Gebremedhin, Peter V. Schaeffer Jan 2006

Modeling Small Business Growth, Migration Behavior, And Household Income In Appalachia: A Spatial Simultaneous Equations Approach, Gebremeskel H. Gebremariam, Tesfa Gebremedhin, Peter V. Schaeffer

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

In this paper, a spatial simultaneous equations model of business growth, migration behavior and median household income is empirically estimated. The empirical simultaneous model is developed from the equilibrium relationships among these variables where each variable is assumed to adjust to its equilibrium level with a substantial lag through a partial equilibrium adjustment process. We use Generalized Spatial Three-Stage Least Squares estimator to estimate the empirical model using data from 418 Appalachian counties for 1990- 2000. The results suggest the existence of very strong interdependences among business growth, migration behavior and median household income in the form of feed-back simultaneities, …

Staging, Prognosis, And Treatment Of Merkel Cell Carcinoma: A Population-Based Study, Douglas Michael Housman Jan 2006

Staging, Prognosis, And Treatment Of Merkel Cell Carcinoma: A Population-Based Study, Douglas Michael Housman

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare form of skin cancer, often described as the most aggressive cutaneous malignancy. Its high propensity for dermal-lymphatic invasion, local recurrence, and rapid lymphatic and distant metastasis poses a significant treatment challenge to clinicians. Combining its highly aggressive nature with its low incidence, merkel cell carcinoma is a particularly difficult cancer to study. Two major staging criteria exist for Merkel cell carcinoma. The purpose of this study is to validate and compare the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) staging criteria with the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) Tumor, Node, Metastasis (TNM) staging …

Environmental Planning In Sub-Saharan Africa: Environmental Impact Assessment At The Crossroads, John O. Kakonge Jan 2006

Environmental Planning In Sub-Saharan Africa: Environmental Impact Assessment At The Crossroads, John O. Kakonge

Yale School of the Environment Publications Series

This paper argues that sub-Saharan African countries are at a crossroads in terms of fully adapting and benefiting from the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process. It identifies a variety of issues that have hindered full utilization of the EIA process. These include limited public participation; lack of national expertise and experience in EIA; unreliable and inadequate data; limited impact coverage; defective environmental legislation; and weak enforcement. The paper concludes by highlighting various measures required to address these constraints and to reinforce the EIA process more generally. Key measures include expanding “ownership” of EIA; ensuring compliance with international agreements; improving funding …
