Anti-Capsular Antibodies Activate Killing Of Escherichia Coli O8:K87 By The Alternate Complement Pathway In Porcine Serum, N. M. Clark, E. M. Berberov, M. Wang, Rodney A. Moxley Nov 2006

Anti-Capsular Antibodies Activate Killing Of Escherichia Coli O8:K87 By The Alternate Complement Pathway In Porcine Serum, N. M. Clark, E. M. Berberov, M. Wang, Rodney A. Moxley

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) strains that produce K88 (F4) + fimbria are important causes of diarrhea and post-diarrheal septicemia in swine. ETEC O8:K87, a serotype represented by a number of these strains, is typically serum resistant. Strain-specific antibodies are known to activate alternative C pathway-mediated killing of other serum-resistant E. coli [Hill, A.W., Shears, A.L., Hibbitt, K.G., 1978. The requirement of specific antibody for the killing of E. coli by the alternate complement pathway in bovine serum. Immunology 34, 131–136], but their antigenic targets have not been determined. We tested the hypothesis that anti-K87 antibodies activate alternative pathway-mediated killing of …

A Proposed Method For Noninvasive Assessment Of Endothelial Damange, Kirsten Menn Nov 2006

A Proposed Method For Noninvasive Assessment Of Endothelial Damange, Kirsten Menn

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Transdermal microvascular studies of endothelial cell function have typically used iontophoresis to facilitate acetylcholine absorption, but iontophoresis introduces an important confounding stimulus that can alter the behavior of the microvasculature. This study examines a non-iontophoretic technique for transdermal microvascular studies using acetylcholine and nitroglycerin and demonstrates a relatively impaired vasodilatory response to these substances in a population with known microvascular pathology. Ten subjects without known vascular disease or diabetes were recruited for laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) monitoring. Topical acetylcholine chloride, nitroglycerin, and placebo were applied to subjects foreheads directly below LDF probes. Readings increased by averages of 406% (245%-566%) and …

Intracranial Aneurysm As A Paradigm For The Genetic Analysis Of Complex Human Traits, Ali Ozturk Nov 2006

Intracranial Aneurysm As A Paradigm For The Genetic Analysis Of Complex Human Traits, Ali Ozturk

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The genetic analysis of complex human traits is hampered by its multifactorial nature, since potentially many genes are imparting a relatively small effect on the disease trait. This makes it considerably more difficult to identify these genes as compared to single-gene diseases, whereby the disease trait is attributable to only one locus, due mostly to the difficulties of carrying out robust linkage analyses. Several strategies have been employed in order to overcome the obstacles of complex human traits, including the candidate gene, non-parametric, and parametric linkage approaches. Of these, the latter two enjoy the benefit of being genome-wide, while carrying …

Pain As The Subjective Fifth Vital Sign Among Patients Undergoing Knee Or Hip Arthroplasty, Lindsey Sukay

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The purpose of this study was, among patients undergoing knee or hip arthroplasty, to examine patients expectations for and experiences of postoperative pain, their perceptions of the quality of their pain management, and to identify potential barriers to effective pain management. This was a prospective cohort study of 68 patients undergoing knee or hip arthroplasty at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Patients were interviewed within 48 hours after surgery using a modified version of the American Pain Society Satisfaction Survey and were asked the amount of pain they expected to have postoperatively (EP) and the actual pain that they experienced in the …

Not A Tiger But A Dagger: The Larva Of Comachara Cadburyi And Reassignment Of The Genus To Acronictinae (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), David Wagner, Eric W. Hossler, Fred E. Hossler

ETSU Faculty Works

Comachara cadburyi Franclemont has benn classified as a sarrothripine (Noctuidae), lithosiine (Arctiidae), and afridine (Nolidae). Larval morphology and behavior indicate a close phylogenetic relationship with Polygrammate hebraeicum Hübner, an acronictine noctuid. The egg and larva of Comachara are described and illustrated with line drawings and scanning electron micrographs. Photographs of last instars of both Comachara and Polygrammate are provided. Larval feeding and pupation habits of C. cadburyi are briefly described and compared with those of Polygrammate. Larvae of both Polygrammate and Comachara exhibit a dramatic coloration change in the last instar, transitioning from a green phase to a mottled, steely …

Understanding Psychological Control Through Differences Between Shame And Disappointment: Implications For Childhood Agression, Sacha Leah Bikhazi Nov 2006

Understanding Psychological Control Through Differences Between Shame And Disappointment: Implications For Childhood Agression, Sacha Leah Bikhazi

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the potentially unique roles that parental use of two psychological control dimensions, shame and disappointment, play in predicting children's relational and physical aggression. It was additionally of interest to investigate whether warm/involved parenting would moderate the effects of these forms of psychological control on both types of childhood aggression. Based on a review of literature, it was hypothesized that parental use of shame would positively predict aggression in children, whereas parental use of disappointment would not be significantly associated with childhood aggression. Additionally, it was hypothesized that warm, involved parenting would have …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Clearance of allergic inflammatory cells from the lung through matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) is necessary to prevent lethal asphyxiation, but mechanistic insight into this essential homeostatic process is lacking. In this study, we have used a proteomics approach to determine how MMPs promote egression of lung inflammatory cells through the airway. MMP2- and MMP9-dependent cleavage of individual Th2 chemokines modulated their chemotactic activity; however, the net effect of complementing bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of allergen-challenged MMP2(-/-)/MMP9(-/-) mice with active MMP2 and MMP9 was to markedly enhance its overall chemotactic activity. In the bronchoalveolar fluid of MMP2(-/-)/MMP9(-/-) allergic mice, we identified several chemotactic …

Willa Cather: Male Roles And Self-Definition In My Antonia, The Professor's House, And "Neighbor Rosicky", Kristina Anne Everton

Theses and Dissertations

Gender roles are a tool used by society to set acceptable boundaries and ideals upon the sexes, and during the early part of the twentieth century in America those gender boundaries began to blur. As a result of the 19th Amendment, men must have felt their decreasing importance because women were no longer solely dependent upon them, and gender roles shifted as woman began to occupy territory that was traditionally held by men. The “New Woman" entered the workforce, and refused to accept traditional female gender conventions. In response to the “New Woman," Theodore Roosevelt and other leading males sought …

Multiple Domains In Siz Sumo Ligases Contribute To Substrate Selectivity., Alison Reindle, Irina Belichenko, Gwendolyn R Bylebyl, Xiaole L Chen, Nishant Gandhi, Erica S Johnson

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Saccharomyces cerevisiae contains two Siz/PIAS SUMO E3 ligases, Siz1 and Siz2/Nfi1, and one other known ligase, Mms21. Although ubiquitin ligases are highly substrate-specific, the degree to which SUMO ligases target distinct sets of substrates is unknown. Here we show that although Siz1 and Siz2 each have unique substrates in vivo, sumoylation of many substrates can be stimulated by either protein. Furthermore, in the absence of both Siz proteins, many of the same substrates are still sumoylated at low levels. Some of this residual sumoylation depends on MMS21. Siz1 targets its unique substrates through at least two distinct domains. Sumoylation of …

Injection And Non-Injection Drug Users' Beliefs On Mandatory Newborn Hiv Testing Laws In The State Of Connecticut, Odicie Fielder Nov 2006

Injection And Non-Injection Drug Users' Beliefs On Mandatory Newborn Hiv Testing Laws In The State Of Connecticut, Odicie Fielder

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

We examined health beliefs among drug users about mandatory HIV testing of newborns and voluntary versus mandatory testing of pregnant women. We also examined to what extent negative experiences and stigmatization affect attitudes towards HIV testing. Baseline structured interviews of active drug users from 1997-2001 were examined. Multivariate data analysis was performed using SAS statistical software. Subsequently, five distinct focus groups were conducted in September 2003. Focus groups were transcribed, coded and analyzed using Microsoft Word 2000. Of 610 drug users interviewed, nearly all (89%) had been previously HIV tested. Nearly all (91%) subjects believed pregnant women should be tested …
